YouTube 2022 is a cesspool of clickbait videos

I am looking to buying a new Mac, either refurbished M1 Pro 13 inches or the M1 Pro 14 inches. I am not a creative professional, and I need this to have a fair amount of tabs open throughout the day. It also needs to last me 5 years. One is a pure budget choice, another one is splurging on nice things, kinda like you get a high class escort to ride your D.

Jesus Christ.

Can someone explain to me how tech YouTubers got so big by literally reading from a spec sheet? THE FUCK do I care about the 1mm difference in chassis or 200g in weight? I'm a regular human being, PORTABILITY is bollocks, nobody is fucking walking around with their laptop all day since you need to sit your ass to do work.

'The Tech Chap' - WTF do I need your lux meter that measures 300 nits more for?

Why do I need to know how fast it renders some 4K video if they are already 100 channels doing it?

You know what I am not getting? 10-15 Chrome tabs test opened for 5 minutes versus the whole day (since that thing leaks memory like crazy, but has all the plugins that business applications use) + whole week with suspend mode in between, as REAL PEOPLE are doing. I did not see a single comparison on that since, of course, every muppet on YT is a 'content creator' and 'creative professional'.

So for all of you 10-inchers alpha males - which one should I pick?

you dont need a pro if all you do to hoard browser tabs. And getting a mac is never a "budget choice". You are always paying for the "apple tax".

and portability does matter for laptops, especially weight.
Agreed, but I like the idea of a more sturdy build (so the opposite of thin thin thin) and also a better screen (since this is what I look at all day).

I am ok with Apple tax, I have an iPhone and an iPad and will never change it for the crap that is the Windows ecosystem.

People follow the money.
This is almost always the answer, in my experience.

Too much information available, not enough time or interest for most people to dive into it themselves, so you get information presented by confident individuals (when this information is fraudulent or misleading, thats literally the origin of the term "con man") and people flock to it.

The presenter also morphs into whatever persona brings the clicks.

I know two people that run a popular channel. They hate it too but clickbait works. They have to make cringy poses for the thumbnail, up the contrast, quick cut editing, etc, etc. They're pulling ~9k/month last we talked and they've only grown and it's not even their main job. Youtube is only going to get worst from what they tell me. They're pushing Shorts hard and it's turning into a "make Shorts or be irrelevant" philosophy.

Lisa from Tech Reviews is pretty good. She covers everything you'd probably need to know without all the bullshit these other channels get up to
I know Lisa, she is the real deal.

I would love to do that, they again I would have to give up my privacy and private life, so no thanks.

Pretty sure Youtube has been filled with lots of clickbait far before 2022.

Yeah, I hate that. I’m fine with Youtubers doing very short videos on the side, but as the main focus of a channel? Fuck off with that shit. This is making me despise Tik Tok even more as we all know it’s responsible for pushing this as the norm. And also for infesting radio channels around 8-10 P.M. I’d like to hear The Weeknd or Ariana Grande‘s songs as they made it themselves, not with some rando amateur’s ”beeps and boops” shoved in that don’t fit and practically drown out the singer for a good deal of the song.

But you can't deny there's so much stuff out there that one can't possibly be expected to research it all on your own.

If you catch someone clickbaiting too hard for your tastes, change the channel to someone who doesn't.

Get the M1 Air.

people are dumb and youtube caters to them.

it's hard to find good content there these days. the adverts are making it harder too. i wish i could give up YT but there really is no alternative. IG/TikTok have kinda made it easier because a lot of people now just upload their IG/TikTok trash as YT shorts but then I don't want to touch those toxic shithole platforms.

No, since I’m not a fan of having now fans + I want to chill for years to come. Basic 8GB/256GB doesn’t suit me, and upgrading base Macs is throwing money down the drain.
Then if $$$ is no concern get the M1 Max with 32gb. My main work comp and it's insane.

If you do research you'd know the air comes highly recommended since its performance is still great but you get the portability. Just pick 16gb/512gb instead. You can get them cheaper now since the M2 came out.

Since you’ll have it for a long time, I would suggest the 14 inch. While a single inch doesn’t sound like much, it’s quite a substantial amount of real estate gain for a few hundred dollars more. You’ll be looking at the screen nearly every day for the next 5 years.

My posts follow the clickbait approach to maximise outrage.

How to GET unlimited TESLAs for FREE. Elon hates this ONE TRICK. Much mad, so annoy, wow relatable.

You are already ad revenue.

If you're using it primarily while sitting at your desk and don't travel with it, get the biggest screen you can (assuming you don't connect to an external monitor).

it takes too much consciousness and deliberacy from individuals to prevent thumbnails from being such a large draw. and it seems a large part of society these days are just running on auto pilot there is so little thoughtfulness in the masses maybe because of over medication and habitual drug use.

OP wants tech advice as isn't tech-savvy. Makes the smart choice of not going to a tech-focused site. Gets abusive in many ways. Thinks this is OK.

Will always buy what they wanted first anyway.

Now try to find a decent written review or comparison where the writer has even touched the thing they are reviewing. Now that is wasteland.

So much this. It’s like they are living in a world of benchmarks and pointless metrics, while thinking it’s natural for someone to switch a machine every year.

Got MBP 14 base unit, should last me 5 years.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
YouTube still does the same thing it did back in 2005 it’s focus is on video sharing and ever since they’ve added pieces like rating systems, stats and editing.

OP, try get an Apple refurbished 14" MacBook Air with 16GB Ram, those extra 1" inch make a difference and the extra thunderbolt port makes it long-term more practical.
Don't go with 8GB despite people telling you it is enough, stay with 16GB.

I got the base MBP 14”. What all the reviews failed to mention is even if you think you can go with 8/256 right now- can you do it for 5 years? Ecological aspect is important to me, I really prefer not to buy new electronics till 3-5 years from now.

Getting 16GB RAM in MBA chassis seems insane to me - you are going to push your notebook without active cooling and minuscule space inside for heat dispersion? That’s asking for trouble.

I still remember one of the first advices for Razer I got in 2018 (and sold one year later) was to turn down the voltage of the components, otherwise the thing was going off like a Harrier jet.

RAM capacity does not equal higher CPU processing amount, infact more RAM means less pressure on the OS memory manager, thread scheduler, less memory compressing shenanigans and less wear on the SSD from swapping.

The 8 GB variant is deceiving because macOS is excellent at memory compression and blazing fast swapping from the SSD, so it feels snappy but in reality the system is constantly running circles with handling low memory.

Fair point, there is so much about tech I don’t know.
Went for MBP 14” due to higher specs and design that appeals to me (I am sure the chassis is something the pulled out from 2000s, but I don’t complain).

I swear Linus Dick Tips started this trend.

Linus can definitely be annoying with the clickbait thumbnails and constant pushing of his merch.
But the actual videos aren't that bad. When they review something they usually go in depth, actually test it out, often dissemble it, get into repairability, run benchmarks, etc.

They don't just read the specs sheet

Shortcircuit is better because they don't pander to you like a twelve year old.

Because the review industry is not serious at this point and just like youtubers, live out of freebies.

Entry line TV, monitor, laptop, vaccumm cleaner? no reviews, because nobody got it free despite the fact that they are actually best sellers. Checking if a launch SSD performance and one produced one year afterwards is the same? nobody does it, it's the consumer that eventually discovers it by accident running a bunch of tests or looking at chip pictures. Apple drops OS support for laptops they sold until 2019 and nobody opens their mouth, because they're not affected, because they're not the majority of people that worked to buy those computers in the first place.

Nobody is really calling out these companies for their policies, their lack of support, which is only easy to do if you only get shit for free.

Linus doesn't but so far they lean too much on community discoveries, only making videos that highlight it or projects. They are not leading the way in actually testing and discovering things.

Which is something he wants to do, but I don't know at this point if he/his company has the means to.

Precisely.

More RAM is better for curbing "swap" operations on the OS. MacOS will use every RAM you throw at it as it'll prefer it to the SSD. And the RAM is faster.

8 GB for MacOS is what I had in 2010, if it wasn't for quick I/O of their system it would be barely usable as is. I would never buy a Apple machine right now with 8 GB and expect it to be future proof, because it's not expandable and if you think about it, the system has no video RAM of it's own too, back in 2010 I had 512 MB dedicated for the GPU.

Whenever I see stuff like this in my feed, I block the entire channel. ("Don't recommend channel"). I don't need woke/anti-woke rage porn.
Yeah mine got like that too, shit is bad for your mental health. You soon realise all they have in their repertoire is to be angry and never actually talk about stuff that is good.

Problem with YouTube is you only need to watch a video once for it to spam your feed with the same subject matter. I searched for advice on stopping my puppy biting once but now my feed is full of the same videos. I get it already, Jesus.

Sounds like you should start making the content thats missing but desperately needed
At this point it feels like every piece of content that can be made was already uploaded onto YouTube, but there is a benefit in taking the existing formula and modifying it to the point where your videos end up being the ultimate way to explain something, videos that contain only the necessary information and don't waste your time.
