Better hit that dislike button while I can still see the results.

edit: gonna post this here instead of on the second page. This uBlock filter will hide the like count, if you wanna keep things even.

The dislike button will still say "dislike" next to it, whereas the thumbs up won't say anything, so you can add this filter if you'd also like to remove the dislike text.

Filters affecting the buttons below videos can have unintended effects when extra buttons are listed, such as a clip or donate button. I haven't yet seen how these filters work on those videos.

No dissent allowed!
Finally big corpo gets some respite from the myriad little voices of the pesky proles so they can advertise their products in peace.

"We want to empower your voice"... yeah except when your voice is critical. A society without dissent is already a dead society.

Leo Strauss is rotating in his gave right now, taking critical distance is the first step to uphold natural right:
If there is no standard higher than the ideals of one’s society, there exists no possibility of taking a critical distance from those ideals. But the mere fact that we can raise the question of the worth of the ideals of our society shows that there is something in man that is not altogether enslaved to his society, and therefore that we are able, and even obliged, to look for a standard with reference to which we can judge of the ideals of our society, as well as of any other society. This standard cannot be found in the needs of the society concerned.

This is not about protecting users, nobody was ever harmed by a thumbs down. This is all about furthering YouTube's future as an advertising platform.

Also what f*cked up reasoning is this? From the video description:

Earlier in 2021, YouTube experimented with making the public dislike count private to see if it would help reduce dislike attacks across the platform. And after analysis conducted in July of this year, we did see a reduction.

We removed the ability to dislike and noticed a reduction in dislikes... yeah no sh*t.

Great move to increase the amount of extremist content that I may inadvertently watch.
There's some awful and graphic content which is still allowed, not even age restricted and you can see from the thumbnail.

If I want to post a comment or downvote a socially aware advertisement, not allowed. Youtube have their priorities, they just don't match up with normal people.

Half of Youtube's mission is "to give everyone a voice?" Huh?

While that's obviously not true, it's a really weird think to say when they are talking about removing options for users to express themselves within the video that said it.

We need a good, privately owned alternative. Badly.

Dislikes are awesome as you can weed out the shitty videos right off the bat when you see it has a high dislike ratio.
But the number without context is meaningless - you have no idea why the video has such a high number of dislikes. Your post is exactly an argument of why the number of dislikes should be hidden. I would wash it should also go for likes.

Rumble is actually doing pretty decent. But yeah, these corpo monopolies (by design) are only going to get worse. Boiling that frog.

Nah.

High dislike ratios have a general correlation to me as being legit bad videos. Not all the time, but often. Activision can release an annual COD trailer and some reason it might get blasted with high dislikes when it's really just another COD trailer.

When I look for fun movie or TV clips on YT, I click the thumbnail. I can tell right away it's a shitty video where someone edited it or pieced in some dumb rickroll or goofy parts into the video going off the disproportionately high dislike count.

Very shitty and there's no legit explanation for this since you could already hide the like/dislike ratio when adding the video. This is only to hide the uncomfortable truth about people mass disliking some content.

Then likes have become meaningless.
Unfortunately best you can do is nothing - don't give likes or 'invisible' dislikes, don't comment (it'll raise the popularity of the video) and don't give any free clicks. And use adblock, of course.

Seldom used it. It's not really essential for my experience. Mostly for mislabeled/corrupted videos. Can comment or report still.

Regarding the for side, it was odd to see an out of character amount of dislikes on some national content, like it was being brigaded. Doesn't even have to be foreign to be organized. It was very obvious tho.

They didn't mention this particular case in the announcement, but maybe it's part of it.

Glad the like is still visible. They understand that there is a use for it being visible. And for the dislike, but their research seems to say we can't have that nice thing because of activists.

We'll see how it goes.

Google couldn't create a youtube competitor app so they bought it.

They couldn't make a video which people would like "insert youtube rewind" so they changed algorithm to hide dislikes.

And then they will pay people like Varitasium who will be making a video soon saying why this is a good thing while saying he is sponsered by google.

"Everything is awesome and good here, we all love the stuff our corporate friends upload to the site!" "There's no bad or disliked content here!, only things we like and other we things we like even more!!!"
"That Gillette ad telling men to go fuck themselves??, look how many people liked it!!, go Gillette!!!!!, our 2018 rewind? 3 MILLION likes, wow you guys really loved that!"

Youtube has some nifty social features and ways to interact with the audience. Nothing can come close with what they have set up. It is the default for videos, streaming and content creation. The other gaming streaming or insta stories aren't in direct competition.

You have the legacy and top channels with 10-100+ million subscribers. Then you have the upcoming, creative, entertaining, educational and funny content. Some of the best content is with channels under 100k subscribers and they grow and get successful.

Unfortunately, some channels play the algorithm without being good or it's sponsored content pretending to be cool. The ad revenue means plenty of great content creators could not leave without losing income. You could take the top 100 channels and they still would not be able to move audience in significant numbers to another platform.

Ad revenue, customer loyalty, the infrastructure, lack of competition and continuous flow of content which attracts and retains talent make it a monolith.

This is a big L for many people that use Youtube. The like/dislike ratio is the tl;dr of videos. If it has more than 20% - 30% + dislikes that video is most often trash. Plus, it is interesting to see people's reactions to certain videos that aren't objectively wrong or misleading. Like a new product coming our or something that has a bad reputation. I often saw highly disliked videos and researched why it was disliked. It doesn't take long to connect the dots.

the slimey thing about this is how they frame it as "harassment campaigns" and to "help creators" when videos are disliked cause they fucking suck. But its so much more nefarious. It really isn't about either, they don't give two shits about those two points but "combatting harassment" has been a catch-all rationale for making any retarded changes lately.

the entire reason they are removing dislikes is because it allows quick information to be gleaned from clicking on a video. before you watch a video with a ton of dislikes you'd dismiss the video and just move on. By hiding the dislikes viewers are forced to watch the shitty video then make up their opinion on it but at that point they've already got their view.

all they care about is view time metrics, by giving viewers less information this forces viewers to watch the video for longer which is what youtube wants sadly.

Actual arguments in the video for the move:
1) To protect creators from "stress and embarrassment" from coordinated video attacks (cited primary reason)
2) That views aren't significantly impacted by dislike count
3) That other platforms don't even have a dislike button, man!

You know they were scratching the bottom of the barrel for this one.

Using browser extensions I've been hiding view counts, subscriber numbers, comments and likes/dislikes for a couple years now.

They should just register the dislikes as negating the likes and stop it at zero.

You could have a clip that is strongly disliked and it wouldn't go above nil. That would still inform people without stepping on any precious toes.
