These NES adventure games must have been huge in Japan. I've read the volumes of Oishinbo manga released in the US, and I cannot imagine interpreting that as a video game, without some kind of Cooking Mama component that is. The manga is basically the main character and his neglectful father competing for who knows more about Japanese delicacies. Its a good manga (I learned why there is no sashimi of fresh water fish), but must be a weird game.
