NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

I don't understand why so many people need to buy GTAV again.

Also, great for MS, I don't think it to repeat on january.

It's an amazing game and people know they like it and will get their money out of it again, plus they're probably getting ti in anticipation for heists.

I'm waiting on a price drop but GTA is my second most played game among friends with CoD being in front according to the xbox leaderboard thing. All of them had it on the 360 too, whenever I ask them why they bought it again their response is just "Idk I like GTA"

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Also, Mario Kart 8 sold 500,000 copies (digital + retail) between October, November and December.

570-580k is actually a really positive number for Wii U, even though its far from great. Very surprised after many assumed and claimed the system is dead.

That Amiibo number is pretty insane though. Just mental.

We can't really say, without a reference point to Skylanders or Disney Infinity toys.
Assuming, 2.6 million x $13, that's not too great as far as revenue for these things go (Reggie expected $1 billion [for the toys to life, not amiibo alone] this year in the US alone).

Yeah, Amiibos are a nice side business. But they just can't be that meaningful to Nintendo's bottom line (yet).

sounds like nintendo should go into the toy business
I do feel they're still underutilizing their licensing and merchandizing potential and this is a good example of what they could be achieving.

Movies, kids TV shows, apparel, more toy lines, school supplies, and more should all be present.

I still find it interesting how low XB1 is for Madden. I believe a good amount, possibly even a majority, of the XB1 Madden sales are digital because of EA access. I really wish EA would give some numbers, all we know is that it exceeded expectations.

Overall it looks like Xbox platform is performing well, and importantly more people are buying software for it even though PS4 still has the overall market share.

The gap is getting smaller in the US, and maybe with the new announced "promotion" of keeping the 349$ MS won't lose much ground from here on out.

I expect sales for both platforms to fall off a cliff in January.

I also took the 360 news to mean it has finally passed the Wii, so maybe overall for gen 7 360 is the lead console.

Splatoon could be a great new franchise for example and is crying out for a cartoon/lunchboxes etc. Hope to dear god Nintendo are smart and market it properly.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
I expected xbone to win Dec. and it leading in software isn't that surprising since it was topping charts for two months in a row.

PS4 has a pretty strong lineup coming very soon, it'll be interesting to see if MS can keep pace.

The air hung heavy over the room. The lonely cry of a bald eagle in the distance penetrated the deep silence. The NPDs were out and they were bad. Nothing more needed to be said, as everyone in the room was contemplating the bleak future ahead. The system architect had had enough. In a sudden lurch, he stormed out of the room and through the corridors. The walls that were towering above him were as the walls of his own personal prison. The hurried pace of his long, elegant steps drew the attention of everyone he passed, but they knew better than to disturb him. Eventually he reached the hidden away recluse that he shared sometimes with Shu. Their closeness was a well-known secret, but everyone kept quiet about it, out of respect. The discarded wrappers of a hurried McDonald's dinner lay strewn across the room. In his rage, Mark tore them into pieces. Just as he was rummaging his pockets for his lighter, Shu came into the room.

"Hey, Mark, calm down. This is not the end of the world", said Shu.

"That's easy for you to say", Mark snapped back. "It is not your creation that failed, that is the laughing stock of all of gaming. But it is not only I who have failed. Not only Sony. But our glorious country lost Today. We are not what we were. We have stagnated. Become a country of old men and dashed ambitions. Today, Japan was beaten by the agile America. Her free market made a country of winners, ambition and superior technology. Today not only signals the end of Sonym but the end of the hopes and dreams of our entire nation."

Shu tried to placate him with a gentle kiss on the neck.

"Come on, it's not over ye-"

"Shut up! You are just in denial. Who cares about pre-season. We lost the big one! We could possibly have afforded to lose this month, but we lost China, our final hope, this month as well. We allowed the gaijins to get China all to themselves. If even 1% of their population buys that dirty product, that's 13 million units sold." Now his voice was rising in a towering crescendo. "There is no way we could recover from that. It is over. All our hard work. All the lies we told about our hardware before launch. All the money we paid to Bish to spread the gospel. It was all for nothing. Well, I have had enough. It ends Today!" he shouted

But the following silence rang almost as loud.

"W-what do you mean?"

Silently, Mark walked over to the rack near the wall, where he kept his katana collection. He picked up a wakisashi.

"Please, Mark, reconsider" Shu begged him. I will draw up a nice warm bath for us. You don't have to do this.

"But I do. I have failed us all. I have failed our country. I have failed the Emperor. I have brought eternal shame upon my ancestors. My honour is gone. I have no option but to end it all. Here and now, according to the traditions of our ancestors."

"Mark, don't be silly. No one does that these days. You were not even born here.

"Shu, I love you", Mark said, and plunged the blade into his gut.

He could feel pain spreading from his stomach. And up his spine and down his legs and up his neck. But there was something else there as well. Welling up inside him growing stronger every moment. And he started imagining things. He could smell the invigorating scent of hamburgers sizzling in a skillet. The feeling of a gun in his hand. And the sensation growing inside him was growing every stronger. In his minds eye he could see broad stripes and bright stars o'er the ramparts so gallantly streaming. He was vaguely aware of Shu shouting. No? That was not Shu. It was someone far more studly. Phil's chiseled pecs were gently brushing against his shoulder as sweet words were whispered in his ears, about content and experiences, and the infinite power of the cloud. And the sensation inside him was now a roaring storm, welling up ever more vigorous in his loins, drowning out the world with its all-encompassing whiteness.

In a basement at the other end of the world, Hindle woke up in his bed, feeling flustered.

"The Xbox One deals were quite popular and have inspired a new promotion starting January 16 where fans in the U.S. can buy an Xbox One for $349 at their preferred retailer."

Well, Microsoft will continue to get big sales then.

CoD sold better on 360 again this month? damn xbox is going to sell a shit load when it goes next gen only, especially if they offer a good bundle.

This is just my own experience with CoD players in my circle.

Holding off on next for a few reason

1 - Price
2 - Good enough on last gen
3 - Nobody owns next gen
4 - Still available on last gen
5 - Controller (both new controllers are worse than the 360 controller for FPS games)
6 - OS (in particular the XB1)

As long as Activision makes CoD on last gen, and makes it run well (at least on 360), then the 360 version will continue to sell best.

For a system 2 years after launch that number is awful. Wii U is dead.

Great Amiibo number though!

Maybe for Gaffers, but public at large haven't a fuck to give anymore.

Maybe....
But I was just casually talking to a guy in the movie theater (selling us our tickets), and he was asking me how the new halo was (after seeing my Master Cheif wallet), and told me that he had gone with the PS4 because of all the skrew ups that happened with X1 and all.
(was 360 last gen.)

It is anecdotal, but I just think that their reveal will haunt them for the rest of the Gen.....
People who do not keep up with the news will in their minds still have that negative picture of the X1 the way it was introduced at launch, and then that negativity just spreads as they tell more people, and while it can be turned around, it takes a long time as bad news always spreads more quickly than good.
Anyways, not trying to derail this thread, so I will quit.

Could mean around 500k for Wii U, though, right? If it is the best month ever, then it would be higher than the 460,000 it did back in Dec. 2012.
Its highest month was in December of 2013 actually, so it's not too surprising (I remember around 482K or so).

i see more variety.

3 rpgs in top10!
2 platformers!
1 car game
couple of wrestling games
couple of skating games

Now it's just shooters and a couple of sports games.

There's a fighting game, 3 sports games, 3 fps, 2 open world TPS and Minecraft, with 2 new IP (3 with we count Minecraft) in the top 10. That's pretty good as far as diversity goes, at least it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.

So, obviously, if I use the two data points of November and December to plot the trajectory of the WiiU...

...Come this time next year, we should be expecting sales of millions of WiiUs per month!

"Strong month". Better than what they said last month, so go with that as your starting point.

Amiibos have an attach rate of like 70% then.

Have to applaud them for monetizing such a small base so well.

Yup. The 3DS iterations are similar too; the low tie ratio tells us its really quite low but Nintendo is bringing in the cash by bringing out new iterations.

Am quite positive for Nintendo's outlook now they seem to be actioning things outside the comfort zone they got stuck in.

I suspect the common architecture project for handhelds and consoles is related more to allowing cross buying of Amiibos and any future products.

Wouldn't be surprised if QOL is almost a battery powered Amiibo!
