NPD Sales Results for April 2015 [Up1: Xbox One #1]

Great for Microsoft but holy crap at minecraft still being so high up! I thought it was crap my self but wow it must be a record for most months in the top 10!

What? Performance has nothing to do with a games line-up lmao. That sounded salty.

Xbox One for this year has Ori and the Blind Forest, State of Decay Remaster, Tomb Raider, Halo, Forza 6, Fable Legends, Neverwinter, which has a tremendous following, Smite, and probably more.

That is far more attractive than Bloodborne, Axiom Verge, Tearway, The Order, etc., not to say those are bad games. Sony really dropped the ball for 2015 and look terribly unprepared. It does not help Uncharted has been delayed and Ratchet and Clank is 2016 too. No Man's Sky I think is the best Sony exclusive for this year but that is not the level of Tomb Raider or Halo. With aggressive pricing, MS can continue to do well.

LOL! What? Where is that retail list comparison?

Well that's torn a streak through the prediction thread.

It's s bit of a surprise but if the estimates are right it looks like a quiet month for both with the GameStop and a few other deals giving XB1 a slight nudge ahead.

It's been obvious for a while if MS can maintain a strong enough value gap - ie keep offering better deals - they can match and exceed PS4 sales if PS4 maintains the higher price point.

May looks like a similar month so should be interesting.

If Sony really want to maintain the pressure of being ahead in U.S. a small price cut may be in order. Just enough to raise their baseline and force MS into having to fight even higher on price to compete.

Deals for holiday season should be intense.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
What did MS do to win this month? I mean, Sony recently released couple of games, and as far as I know MS lineup was pretty barren this year and there was no price cut.

Halo master chief collection hardware bundle killing it. Up big MoM. Likely due to the halo 5 TV campaign with the bundle In the end tag, and their big reveals and pushes recently for that title. Well planned on their part.

Quantity doesn't mean quality. As I've said, the Xbox One titles are far more attractive than PS4's for this year for general consumers that can help sales. If MS won this month, which is very slow, then it can win more.

I think relative game library attractiveness would really depend on the taste of the user. Both systems have great lineups, and both can do well.

Best typo ever :D

Regardless of who came first, these numbers seem bad. Someone posted that these numbers are the same as the 18-month figures for the PS3 and 360. Pulling the same numbers as two more expensive consoles (in total) 8 years ago doesn't seem like such a grand achievement.

Price of PS3 was $399 back in early 2008 and price of X360 was $279 for Arcade version and $399 for Pro version. Not that different from current prices of PS4 ($399) and Xbone ($349 and $449).

I just think saying that MS's lineup is objectively more attractive is quite the conclusion to come to.

I think you mean Halo 5. ;)

Interesting to hear that Halo brand is still pulling its weight. Maybe it's not as atrophied as many believed it to be. Are we sure this is not just MCC bundle gradually replacing the ACU bundle as the main SKU? I'd imagined ACU bundle stock has gotta be getting low at this point.

Oh wow, seeing this in the OP makes me happy.

“If the top 10 software list was ranked on a SKU basis rather than a title basis, PS4’s Bloodborne, 3DS’s Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and Wii U’s Mario Party 10 would make the list.”

You have different taste. Is that clear? It doesn't mean that Toukiden or Tomorrow Children or NMS are less attractive games cuz they aren't Halo or Tomb Raider caliber. Right? Right.

MS won April cuz trade-in deals.

Here : ( minus Ratchet & Clank and you can add GeOW if you want ) GIVE ME SHOOTERS

Where the fuck is Bloodborne on that list ?!?

Fuck this world.

Congrats, Xbone! Since buying DaS2 on it I am using the console almost daily. It's slick.

For a last-gen port :( but I never played the game anyway.

Also pretty huge drop for 3DS from last month (not that much higher than last years despite New 3DS). Like I suspected New 3DS only gave it couple months of extra push as hardcore Nintendo fans upgraded. It's going to be long year for Nintendo in US.

It's pretty amazing when you work together to build something, last year when I played it me and 5 other 25+ year olds made a castle working together, was a flashback to the days of building with LEGO. And this is all after we constantly made fun of our friend who played it all the time, it's a very well made game.

All that stands out to me is Bloodborne and Persona 5. As someone who got a PS4 just for the exclusives it's pretty shitty. Hopefully some surprises at E3.

How well has Tekken done in NA with its past few titles? I'd be very interested to know.

EDIT: I started today's as a Junior. How did I become a Member? Is it on a timer? Did I just not screw up and not get banned? How exciting!
Sorry, I don't have a record of how well previous Tekken games did. But Tekken Tag Tournament 2 sold average at best.

Wow, we're doing this? smh.

Kinda funny to see Dark Souls 2 but not Bloodborne in the NPD list.

Good for Xbox One. A one-sided console generation would be a boring generation. But if MS wants to catch up to PS4, they need these "wins" internationally too, not just in US. This can be done by attracting good games, and looking less like a mindless cold corporation that talks PR bullshit and more like passionate gamers.

Uh. None of those are system sellers or as attractive to the general public as Tomb Raider or Halo. Persona 5, Until Dawn, or any other game on that list is not going to have NOWHERE close to an impact as Halo or Tomb Raider will.

MS won April cuz trade-in deals.

Oh, the salt lol.

I don't see anything about objectively better lineup in his post. He said the Xbox library has better appeal to the mass market than the ps4 has, which is certainly true. The games you mentioned are have incredibly niche appeal in the US.

The Xbox part is missing alot.

Fable legends?
Scalebound?
Neverwinter?
Gears of Wars Collection?
Smite?
Phantom Dust?
Ori and the Blind Forest?

Thing will set on stone by E3. Nevertheless its definitely missing half of the confirmed Xbox One lineup for 2015.

I'm just amazed that people are still buying Minecraft as much as they are. I knew it was popular... just not THAT popular.

Retail only yo. Got to fit the narrative. Sells the PS4 short as well with no No Mans Sky and Rime.

Only territory in Europe that they can do something is in the UK. Elsewhere is one horse race for quite some time.

They can always do "something".

Even if they have to lower the price to 199 €.

Or start a program "exchange your xbox 360 into an xbox one for 99 €".

But they just must do something because otherwise even if they win North America, they will still be at a 1,5:1 or even 2:1 ratio worldwide.

Its the huge reason MS purchased it. It has a massive following and, outside of MS messing things up, any future Minecraft content is going to do really well for them.

Just announce MC 2 already!

This can be a dangerous year for the PS4. Sony's games lineup is atrocious this year while Xbox One has a lot more attractive titles.

Rubbish. There are far too many games coming out that anyone can buy or have time to play.

Attractive is subjective, its 2015 and IMO I can no longer stomach bad looking games, so I don't buy any games with tearing, sub HD or poor frame rates.

So, which games are attractive coming up ?

Yes, I notice on my 55 inch Panny 4 K AX802, and I sit close.

The only game that looks remotely interesting on the exclusives list is Tomb Raider, but happy to wait for the definitive version.

RETAIL games, man! RETAIL! Scalebound doesn't have a release date and there is no GeOW collection, only the first GeOW.

Oh, the salt lol.

What salt? LOL! What is the other reason for Xbone winning the April NPD besides trade-in deals?

Would love to know Best Buy's Xbox One sales because trade in deals were a huge part towards Xbox One purchases. $100 gift card for a 250gb 360 or PS3 plus a $75 coupon towards the purchase of an Xbox One. Add in the $50 gift card that a lot of Best Buy consumers received via email when purchasing an Xbox One and you're basically getting an Xbox One for $125 after you receive the $50 gift card.

I'm sure $125 compared to $400 has a lot to do with why Xbox One won in April and even then, it was only by 13k more.

Also, one thing that you simply don't know is out of all those who purchase consoles every month is the simple question of - does that consumer who's purchasing an Xbox One or PS4 already own the other console or is their first purchase between the two.

With all the promotions towards Xbox One, offers, bundles, etc., you can easily say it's more of "one hell of an offer to pass up" as opposed to just wanting to go out and buy one because you want it.

Either way, it would be great if there were more in-depth details in regards to sales.

Wait. What is this bullshit?

Xbox 360 April 2007 (Second April) 174k

PS4 April 2015 (Second April) 174k

PS3 April 2008 (Second April) 187k

Xbox One April 2015 (Second April) 187k
Holy shit. I know I'm late but this gave me a legit shock. The numbers line up exactly. God, this is like some sort of prophecy.

Something like this cannot be so easily explained. The PS4 has also had trade-in deals pretty commonly over the last 12 months actually, and Xbox. This is not the first month of a Xbox One trade-in promotion..

Despite more games being listed for Xbox One, it still loses to PS4 for me personally. The Order: 1886, Bloodborne and Axiom Verge win 3-1 over just Ori. I could add Tomb Raider but that's a timed exclusive so if you're a patient gamer, you can just wait to play it on PS4. Could also add State of Decay because it's a damn good game but I didn't add The Last of Us Remastered to last year's comparison so no reason to start adding in last gen ports. And no, God of War III shouldn't be added either.

The majority of Xbox One exclusives are either FPS (my least favorite genre), racing (have no interest) or online games like Fable and Neverwinter. Either or both could be great but I have no interest in either. PS4 is lacking when it comes to "AAA names" but it's all about what your personal preference is. I personally would pick No Man's Sky over all of the games listed that haven't been released yet regardless of the console it was going to be released on.

Another factor is this - I don't really see ANY of those games that haven't been released yet having a major factor in sales. The longer you wait to buy a console, there's usually a good amount of games already released that the consumer wants to play. Future titles are always taken into consideration but what's the point of buying a console at the time if there's nothing you want to play?

Didn't have a great start in March, and isn't listed in this months top 10.
Err no. So far as I'm aware BB launched better than previous From Software "Souls" style titles and it's made clear that as a single SKU it would have been in top 10.

It's not and never was a AAA title, it's a prestigious critical darling aimed at a smaller audience.

In short I haven't seen one piece of info anywhere that the game isn't doing well for what is is.

People can behave as though it was going to do high end Uncharted or Gears numbers but that was never actually going to happen.

It's the kind of title that would have produced a modest, short lived sales dime that then becomes a long term library enhancer. It's impact on console sales for April would always have been minimal.

Bottom line both consoles has relatively standard slow month sales and most likely better price/deals combo gave XB1 a slight edge.

Once you really look at the data the small victory for XB1 isn't even that surprising.

Major momentum over a competitor needs a true must have game (which neither console has as on now) or a really steady flow of exclusives to keep delivering sales spikes (again neither is doing this although Sony is probably closer but The Order didn't deliver) or a lot of deals and offers which MS is actually doing a better job of.
