Transformers Coming the Summer of 2006

DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, in association with Hasbro, Inc., will develop a live-action, motion picture based on the globally popular Transformers franchise. Steven Spielberg will executive produce. The film is slated for release in the summer of 2006. Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Constantine), Don Murphy (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Tom DeSanto (X-Men and X2: X-Men United) are attached to produce.

DreamWorks Head of Production Adam Goodman stated, "Steven and everyone at DreamWorks are very excited about the prospect of expanding the world of 'Transformers' into the live-action feature film arena. The possibilities for a thrilling action adventure are virtually endless, and a film holds the definite promise of expanding an already worldwide fan base to new audiences."

"This is a tremendous franchise that offers us the opportunity to create an inventive and thrilling action-adventure film," said Donald De Line, Vice Chairman, Motion Picture Group and President of Paramount Pictures. "We're happy to work with our colleagues at DreamWorks to develop this project with Hasbro. There couldn't be a better team to bring the 'Transformers' to the big screen."

"We are truly fortunate to have the best talent in the entertainment industry on board for the 'Transformers' movie and are excited at the opportunities this powerful collaboration will bring to the property," said Brian Goldner, President of Hasbro's toys segment. "The 'Transformers' franchise has been successful in many entertainment arenas and we are thrilled to give millions of fans an extraordinary experience that's never been done in the history of the brand."

Hasbro will work with the production team, DreamWorks and Paramount on all aspects of the film's creative development, marketing, promotions and will manage merchandising in conjunction with the release of the film. Hasbro will also team up with Takara, who has been the co-developer of the Transformers brand since its beginning in the early 1980s.

"The 'Transformers' brand has always struck a chord with fans around the world and remains one of our strongest franchises since it was introduced 20 years ago," said Keita Satoh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Takara. "Together with Hasbro, DreamWorks and Paramount, we will bring the property to a new level for fans in the Japanese market, as well as around the world."

DreamWorks will distribute the film domestically, while Paramount will distribute internationally.

In 1984, the Transformers brand took the world by storm with its compelling saga of the "Robots in Disguise," and quickly became a childhood rite of passage with a tremendously successful toy line from Hasbro and Takara, comic book series, television program and animated feature film. Twenty years later, a new generation of kids has discovered the excitement of the Transformers brand and the legendary characters, such as Optimus Prime and Megatron, that truly are "more than meets the eye." Today, the franchise features a popular toy line, an animated series on Cartoon Network and a chart-topping comic book series from Dreamwave Productions, which sold two million Transformers comic books last year.

Dude
we are gonna try to treat this as realistically as possible

one giant robot doesn't turn into the gun for another
nor does a giant robot turn into a tape deck

We MAY have Soundwave- but we'd keep him proportional and make him a cd player or something.

Think REALITY

If Megatron is a tank, then when he transforms it is to scale.

Does anyone think we should keep the Transforming SOUND- squugeee or however you'd spell it

This guy needs to be shot.

You stupid fuck, ITS A MOVIE BASED ON A CARTOON SERIES THAT HAS GIANT ROBOTS THAT CHANGE INTO SEMI TRACTOR TRAILERS AND A VW BUG!! IT AIN'T REALITY!!!!

This movie is going to suck.

LMAO I couldn't of said it better Rip. They are gonna fuck this up big time!

At least make Soundwave transform into a boombox that ejects memory sticks for crying out loud....

Megatron won't be a gun?

Fuck that.

Haha, so fickle. Honestly, now. He'd be what, a giant robot that MYSTERIOUSLY SHRINKS INTO A TINY GUN. SURE.

There's a point where implausability becomes a little too much.

I remember hearing rumors long ago of a GI Joe movie starring Henry Rollins as Duke.

But no Chris Latta voice = no Cobra Commander. Someone else would have to lead Cobra.

Bah.

The Rock would make a better Duke.

Hell, they could just resample "COBRA, RETREAAAAAT!" and use that for 90% of Cobra Commander's lines...just like in the show!

Transformers has been all down hill since the first series aired if you ask me ;p. It`s getting whomped on all over by the Yuusha series (its direct competitor in Japan) in coolness and production.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
What the fuck does Steven Spielberg know about the Transformers?!!

While he shrunk significantly in the comic, in the cartoon he didn't become very tiny. Starscream and others wielded him in gun form.

And yes... the G2 Tank = FUCKING LAME. At least compared to the Luger.

Vindication...sweet.
Generation 1 movie, please. Anything else (G2, Beast Wars, Armada, Energon, War Within, blah blah blah) would be uncivilized. ^_^

Considering the cartoons and now the movie are just marketing tools to sell more toys I would think that the movie is based on an upcoming toyline more than anything.

I don't see the point. The cartoon Transformers movie was one of the greatest movies of all time and definitely the best animated movie ever and that was a huge flop. Even Spielberg won't be able to get mainstream America to go see this.

Fuck that. Anything else would be plain wrong...

Oh and as I understand it, excess mass (say when transforming from huge robot to tiny handgun) is stored and retrieved from a parallel dimension that Transformers can access at will. I think that Energon has something to do with it too.

Hell, I don't care. All I know is that Star Trek has gotten away with this kind of ballbags for years, so why not TF?

Just to inject a healthy dose of reality into this thread:

There's 20 years of Transformers cartoons, toys, and fiction that spreads between myriad comics and cartoon series. Megatron was a gun for two of those years.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a HUGE deal, and this surely wouldn't be the first movie to make changes for the sake of film. Spiderman got his organic shooters that my friend loathes simply because of their association with 2099, and the X-Men got rid of their signature, day-glo spandex. Somehow, Megatron, the villain who you can presume is going to be doing something akin to trying to take over the planet/destroy it/whatever, might not be that intimidating if his alternate form, amongst cars, fighter jets, and combining robots was a shitty little Walther P38.

Remember, Hasbro's going to be making toys for this, toys aimed at kids. Toy guns are a whole can of worms that they don't even want to tease with a can opener, it's the reason you will never see any form of the G1 Megatron re-issue in the U.S.

No other animated film will ever have the star power of Orson Welles, Eric Idle, Robert Stack, Scatman Crothers, Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, and That Guy From The Eighties Who Could Talk Really Fast.

Good times. Good times.

If this is done right it could literally be the greatest movie, no work of art ever made. How fucking cool could this be? I have waited my whole life for a "real life" Transformers project. This just might be cinema perfection. The movie universe collapses after it's made because nothing before or after can even lick it's sack. Of course that's only IF it's taken seriously and is pulled off correctly.

Honest question. Was I the only one who popped a half-woody when reading this news? That's NEVER happened to me in any way involving a movie before(except on those dry spells when some movie slut bounces her ass and titties all over the damn screen).

On the subject, does anyone have the Season sets? How are they? How many episodes? I saw 3 seasons each split into two set(which is BOOL-SHEEET). I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need them(and at 40 a pop I'm doing a good fucking job).
GODDAMN I hate being poor.

Beast Wars is the best thing that has happend Transformers in many ways. I prefer the G1 toys over Beast Wars toys. But Beast Wars cartoon was several times better than G1 cartoon ever was IMO.

If it was based on Beast Wars I'd refuse to watch it. Wouldn't even catch it on cable. It was a cool series yeah. But what would you rather see. Human sized anthropomorphic animals fighting? Or a scene where a squadron of fighter jets is chasing a rogue over a city. From the air you see it out maneuver and shoot down half. Then it transorms into a huge black metal SOB in midair. From the streets people watch activity in the sky and the rest of the squad is annihilated. They hear a noise and snap a look at the street. A speeding VW Bug and Thunderbird transform, and take to the air in one motion then chase after the badass black machine.

Transformers the Movie > BeastWars

Hey it's been AT LEAST 10 years since I've seen the original. I have to figure out which sucker of a relative to explain dropping 150+ on an old cartoon is an absolute vital neccisity.

PS. I'm cool with there being some liberties. Fuck it don't even have to be transformers. I'm just happy I'm getting a movie with photorealistic motherfucking goddam giant transforming robots. Pardon the language but this is something I've wanted to see for very long time.

I used to be a Beast Wars hater a number of years ago mainly because it didn't look like the old TF's with cars etc. But I gave it a chance and was hooked immdediately. The episodes were exciting. I wanted to know what will happen next. I never had this feeling when watching G1 at all, not now not when I was a kid. G1 had a cooler concept but the stories were horrible, you can witness that especially when viewing them today, they haven't exactly aged well. They aren't as good as I thought they used to be. It's the same with TF The Movie. Great cast, great animation for its time, awesome music but in the end the movie was rather dull IMO. Don't get me wrong I still like TF Movie but I don't regard it as one of the best movies or cartoons ever made, not even close.

that was the main difference between beast wars and the orininal series. G1 was episodic (is that the right term) like say, Samurai Jack, hardly an ongoing plot, at least not "oh shit, what's gonna happen next week?"

Season 3 of G1 was great I still think, while 1 and 2 did not age well. The movie could have benefited from a much better showdown between galvatron and hot rod.

DarienA

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
G1 = Love it for nostalgic reasons
Beast Wars = Hated it at first('not real Transformers') but due to tie ins to G1 and just good eps really grew to love it.
Beast Machines = Absolute f'n garbage.

I was always a fan of Beast Wars, though it did take some time to get into it. Still, nothing, including Beast Wars, compares to the animated perfection that is Trasnformers the Movie. It is a freakin rock and roll space adventure people!!! It doesn't have a single slow moment in the entire movie, it is all action and drama and kickass 80s rock the entire time. And the best part, unlike most movies which drag on for 2 some hours, Transformers the Movie is like 30 minutes long, so you know they only kept the good parts in it.

your attention to detail sucks, especially for a future lawyer... the movie was LIKE 90 minutes.

lol, I was trying to be funny and stretching the truth a little. I might have failed at teh funny part though. And I could be wrong, but I don't even think it makes it to 90 minutes. I think it was like 88 minutes.

no, you're right, that's why I said like 90 minutes, I wasn't being serious in the first place of course.

Ok if you guys want this to be the movie you want, get over to www.donmurphy.net, he is the producer of the movie, and join his forums. Here is what he just posted on his forum:

Many things to answer here on the fly.
There's a shitload of rumors that you guys take as facts out there. There are NO voice actors yet. There may be soon. I will personally make sure that our director considers Frank and the gang. I think celebrity voices for a film like this is moronic.
Someone out there is telling you that there aill no be toys for this movie from Hasbro? Dream on. That's the very reason they WANT a film from Steven Spielberg.
NOTHING is decided. IN MY OPINION knowing how Hollywood works---
1- I do not see mass shifting happening.
2- I do not see a giant robot turning into a cassette player.
3- Hasbro will not have a toy that turns into a pistol.>
4- I just saw the robots in SKY CAPTAIN at Comic-Con- we want ours to be the opposite of those. Personalities!

We are NOT doing anything to do with Beasts and Dinos and shit.
I think Soundwave is the burger with cheese and sauce. I think his "tapes" are badass.
Maybe you're right- maybe he never changes.
Dunno.
Keep talking- you can tell we are really listening.
The next few weeks will have us, ala X MEN, decide on 7 core members of each team. Desanto will be there to make sure we stay true.
Your input is NOW.

GET OVER THERE and make your voices heard.

I don't know exactly what type of live action transformers movie that I want because I can barely imagine it being live action.

If anything, I'd have rather have a CG/animation mix than live action... like Blue Sub 6 or other recent animes.
