DOOM Review Thread - The Fury Road of Shooters

Bethesda needs to actually these. That's easy money being left on the table right now.
Absolutely. I spent an unhealthy amount of time trying to find one for sale yesterday. Hoping someone ends up 3D printing them, because I'd pay good money for a little collection.

Awesome game - yet another great impulse purchase due to GAF word of mouth (previous ones I've bought were Mad Max, the Wolfensteins, and Alien Isolation). Really gravitating back towards these more driven/linear games now than the sandboxes and WRPG's I've normally gone for.

Music is awesome, too.

Guess it's time to jump on teh DOOM train.

Any significant differences between PS4/X1? My PS4 has been super busy lately, but my X1 is feeling very neglected since QB...which I really should get back to...

X1 has a lot of resolution drops and some framerate drops. I'd get it on PS4.

DF based on the beta, not sure if it changed since:

Performance is improved all round then, and both consoles offer up a very similar experience across the run of play. At points where the engine is more heavily stressed, taxing alpha transparencies from weapons fire create mild stutter that quickly disappears as frame-rates snap back from 55fps to the target 60fps update. It's a mildly jarring experience, but thankfully, the engine doesn't falter for long, and gameplay mostly sticks to the performance target for extended periods. The worst we saw on Xbox One was a 50fps dip we could not recreate on PS4, but this was the exception rather than the rule.

Achieving this level of stability on Xbox One doesn't come for free - but it's a compromise we've seen before that doesn't have an unduly negative impact on gameplay. A 900p native resolution is deployed compared to a full HD framebuffer on PlayStation 4. Image quality isn't quite so pristine on Microsoft's console - however, the use of temporal anti-aliasing (TSSAA) along with the muted colour scheme ensures that there are no obvious upscale artefacts on screen. Edges appear smooth, with the combination of temporal supersampling and shader coverage providing a clean image that holds up very well against the PS4 version - which in itself looks rather soft too. It's rare we see such clean imagery outside of running on PC with extreme levels of supersampling, and that's great to see.

I put up a video on the DF YouTube channel showing the differences. PS4 has better image quality and runs more consistently at 60 but it's still pretty good on XO.

I also give the Shotgun a 10/10

I love that they don't fuck around and give you the shotgun right away. No "Oh, you have to play with just the pistol for 30 minutes..." BS. Just "Here is the pistol, it sucks. Here is the shotgun, you will use this till the end of the game"

The fully upgraded pistol is a beast, I probably played 3-4 levels using just that, before deciding I should upgrade some of the other weapons as well.

This game is SO GOOD. Just finished the Foundry and I'm staring at the main menu debating whether to do one more level before bed, lol.

I'll get back to UC4... eventually. Doom is way more fun.

Everything has to be Uncharted 4 or it doesn't look good.

And then you'll still get someone that thinks Uncharted 4 doesn't look good. Such is graphics discussions.

"Mediocre visuals,"

Fucking wut. A game that looks this good on PS4 at 60 FPS is just unreal. And the art design is just...hnnnnnnnng.

Seriously, what are they comparing the game to, U4?

Compare it to other 1080P 60FPS games on the PS4, what are they, MGS5, COD and remasters like Metro, TLOU, Uncharted collection etc?

This game kills all of them visually quite easily, I really don't get it.
If 1080P is not essential than the only 60 FPS game that might looks better on PS4 is Battlefront, DOOM as an overall technical package is incredible.

And yea the game will end up, undeservedly, at around 7 MC, it's really annoying.

Would be "hilarious" (the bad kind) if Homefront will be around the same MC.

Between Fury Road and this, I'm glad we're beginning to see entertainment take a step away from realism to go "You know, sometimes we just want some fun."

If you have the choice I'd go ps4 better res/iq and more stable frame rate.

IGN's final score is 7.1.

The only thing that the XB1 version might have is a controller that is more suitable for your taste.

Otherwise if you're fine with the DS4 there is no reason to buy the XB1's version, and don't worry your console won't be insulted if you'll buy the PS4 version.

If you're asking about how the XB1 version is in general, than it seems to be great, just that the PS4 version is better, holds the 1080P and barely drops below 60 unlike the XB1's, but either way you will be satisfied technically.

Holy shit IGN really complaint about the multiplayer? Really? That's why a 7.1?

Unbelievable...like multiplayer is so important for a DOOM game fuck me it's a goddamn freebie the meat is in the single player that's where that huge treasure is located that has been missing since others shooters didn't bother to do.

The OG of the fighter has left plenty disappointed (abet surrounding it) yet the OG of the FPS makes a surprise return to glory; guess we'll have to wait and see how the OG of the (J)RPG turns out later this year.

This makes the comic canon now.

This is probably what we're going to see with the next installment. Probably Doom: Hell On Earth?
Doom 3 was a remake of 1 so I can see this as a remake of 2 with the COD tangents being usable due to it simply taking place on Earth...still was a horrible direction to take.

It's less the doll (though she found that addition cute) and more the Big Hero 6 animation.
OMG he even had green armor, it really makes sense now!

IGN review 7.1

Watch COD with its no doubt short and mediocre campain get an 8 or 9.
I don't usually care about reviews. It's a silly thing that people love to argue over but Doom needs help to succeed. 7.1 is unjust and potentially damaging to the game. Really pisses me off in this case.

I will do my best to sing its praises on DF, but it's not like I'm actually reviewing games there. I sounds like the Giant Bomb crew is loving it so I'm hoping for a good review there. Hopefully other major sites will also give it the scores it deserves.

The IGN guy doesn't know anything about what it takes to make a good shooter.

"Boss battlesq" :D

anyway, pretty decent review and the score is imo appropriate. 7 is a good score.

for a game where a large element of it's full package (MP) is pretty awful, i think a 7 is perfectly reasonable. it probably would have fared better without the MP at all really. it's only going to be abandoned after a week or so anyway.

Clearly IGN guy likes linear 'cinematic' fps gameplay instead of huge open levels, shooting demons in the face, replayability, secrets etc.

Rise of the triad remake did this years ago and now seeing DOOM doing this it is a breath of fresh air in the streamlined shooters these days.

If this is the Fury Road of shooters, does that mean it's going to underperform? What would be the Furious 7 of shooters? The Avengers Age Of Ultron of shooters?

Yeah it follows the timeline where doom guy killed Ganondorf

I lol'd.

Don't even have the game, but that IGN review is questionable at best. I hate when amazing single player games are docked heavily for average multi. I'm sure if Wolfensiein had multi, it would have a much lower metacritic score.

IGN review 7.1

Remember they gave Alien Isolation a 5.9... I don't give a damn about reviews but these are damaging the industry and ultimately gamers if they don't value what these games bring to the table compared to the usual AAA boring crap. (which these silly reviewers seems to love)

Sales wise. Fury Road didn't make a lot during its run at the box office.

378 million dollars is a lot

ehm, IGN gave Shadow Warrior 8.6 so they can spot a good game
