DOOM Review Thread - The Fury Road of Shooters

Oof 74 on Metacritic. Guess I'm not entirely surprised it's the fans vs the the press on this one.

Thankfully id and Bethesda are actually keeping a good eye on GAF and seeing all the positive feedback and impressions helping with the good word of mouth that I hope they know they've got a winner here and fantastic game despite what the press might be saying or reviewed.

Please don't turn this thread into an UC4-like review thread shitfest. If your "contribution" is "fuck ign", "ign are wankers" etc., don't be surprised to catch a ban.

This game is way longer than 6 hours. Don't believe the misinformation.

Also, thread-related:

I hope for a GB review either from Brad or Jeff soon.

I just beat the first 'boss' and this is definitely true. After a really low point in level 5 it starts to ramp up very quickly. There's almost a Serious Sam kind of crowd control thing going on at this point.

I think I'm tracking to have spent about 1 hour per level including scouring for secrets. Not that I'm finding them all. The last few levels haven't been backtrack-friendly so I keep missing stuff.

Reviewers (generally) get to play the game for free, I would imagine they have more of a critical eye for any potential failings than those who have put their hard earned down.

I wonder if the fan response will be the same in a week?, once the honeymoon period has worn off.
This was me about 4 days ago, so I can definitely understand the sceptical sentiment. Now I'm in love with the game's campaign and after 10 hours in haven't even finished it.

And I have no trouble selling a stinker after I bought one and don't enjoy my time with it. I sold the last Mad Max game after 3-4 hours. But Doom is one of those game's that I will keep even after finishing it. I will go through this campaign again and again.

Thankfully id and Bethesda are actually keeping a good eye on GAF and seeing all the positive feedback and impressions helping with the good word of mouth that I hope they know they've got a winner here and fantastic game despite what the press might be saying or reviewed.
Do they?

That'd be nice to know since I'd hate if they take the wrong message from the critics and then it's back to cinematic corridor fluff. The bad apple here is the solely the MP.

To those worried about SP campaign length - don't. It's straight gameplay 90% of the time. It's given me more enjoyment in my first few hours than pretty much every game in its completion this gen on their own. I'm not even rolling hard to complete and find everything until my second play through. This game is staying in my PS4 for quite some time.

Most of the complaints that I've read is that it's repetitive and wears thin by the end while also being uninspired from an art perspective when it came to Hell's design.

Still seems a little harsh if the game is great for some good hours.

The lackluster, outsourced MP is dragging it down.

That's dumb is it's true, if the campaign is good and meaty, why do they care about bad MP? just ignore it, pretend it's single only.

It's like reducing points for TR 2013 because of bad MP.

This meta score is so bullshit. It seems like not sending review copies before release is a good thing now. I would probably do the same thing, video games journalism is a joke nowadays

Level 5 was one of my favorites, actually.

The Serious Sam arena thing is OK here, but it's something wish they did less often. I know the original had a lot of similar rooms but you were never really locked into an area in classic Doom. Small gripe, though, and the actual combat is so good that it doesn't hurt the game. Serious Sam was just a bunch of flat rooms most of the time, at least Doom presents very complex arenas to battle in.

I'm split on that one. I can definitely understand wanting to evaluate a complete product. Some people might buy it for the MP.

What is definitely true is that outsourcing a whole part of your game almost never pays off. A shit, tacked-on MP has taken the deserved limelight away from so many great campaigns or the other way round.

If they do make another Quake, I sure hope they get themselves some MP talent into Id Software and make it a cohesive, well-rounded product.

Only played it for a short time,30 minutes ish and loved it.It's Doom alright, with a few nuts n bolts added.Reviews around what I expected

Yea you can say DOOM's not meant to be about bosses and all, but from what i've seen they looked really good...

I just don't remember bosses being that common in old DOOM's, like one at the end and thats it. But then it has been ages since I have played them. Bosses in DOOM 2016 are unique from each other and kinda cool, but nothing overly complicated or ground breaking when it comes to mechanics.

Oh yeah. I've seen a few of the id and Bethesda guys on social media posting about Doom including some GAF screencaps and comments especially when some gaffers found Sean Bean and the Green Doom guy collectible gif. lol

There was even the recent reaction to The Flash's recent meme so they're obviously keeping an eye on some of the Doom threads here. lol

Even Doomguy looks annoyed at the time spent when buying a weapon mod from the drones.
For those who have not played it yet: he punches the drone when done.

I bet it will end up in mid 80's by the end.

I always thought the single player looked amazing since the initial review , is I'm glad they stuck with it and just went crazy with the old school speed etc

The multiplayer was such a bad idea , I would have preferred they just made a longer single player campaign , or at the very least a multiplayer mode that was just single player with the classic arena style.

Feels like 2 different games , the old school single player which everyone lives vs the multi which is trying to bring in stupid crap from call of duty and the like.

Funny how fans are overwhelmingly saying the single is great and the multi is crap . Should signal to Bethesda that people want the old school design.

even "howlongtobeat" is saying 7.5 for story. upwards of 33 for completionist.

i dunno. it's sounding quite short considering it's all that there is (i thought the MP was pretty much terrible) but i'll dabble in a few months when it's shaved off a few quid. i'm sure what's there is fun though.

It's at 10 and a half hours for the story now.

There seem to be a consensus on MP being bad but no one is telling exactly why.
I have been playing for a couple of hours and having a blast as well.

It's as much a return to form as the single player.
It's fast, it's relentless and you need the skill.
It plays like old Unreal Tournament and Quake with a XP and leveling system + a couple of great ideas like the demons to spice things up.

I have got a hunch that a lot of people are bashing the MP because they are getting destroyed and are not used to this kind of old school MP.

I think the meta would actually be higher (right now) if they had gotten review copies. Look at the reviews actually listed. They probably blew through the campaign without taking time to notice all of the small details and tried a few rounds of MP they didn't care for. I wouldn't be surprised if places are annoyed at Beth for holding back review copies and are docking them for it.

Also interesting to compare PS4 vs PC vs XBO -- Xbox would be ~87 if it had a metascore right now (only 3 reviews in, 2 90's and an 80).

Anyone that read enough reviews: what are the reasons of the reviewers for not giving it a 9 and above?

Like what did they expect?

The MP seems to be what people don't like and its understandable. It's not that great.

Its the SP that remains excellent but as a whole package I can see that the score is not being 9's or 10's.

I really liked Uncharted 4 but I don't want to replay it. I already want to play more of Doom. That's how good it is. I have no problem shitting on a stinker when I buy one. I thought Fallout 4 was terrible and sold it two days later.

If anything, it should highlight just how out of touch reviewers are with the buying public, and just how little credence should be placed on reviews, Meta score is held up as some sort of seal of quality when's is just the average of some peoples opinions.

Luckily DOOM has a ton of exposure on YouTube and on here, so people should hear just how good it is despite the relatively luke warm critical reception.

I haven't played it yet, but I intend to at some point.

Loadouts instead of weapon pickups is what's killing it.

They shouldn't have tried to cater the MP to the COD crowd. They had such a great foundation with the SP and they should've extended that into the MP.

edit: And no free for all deathmatch? I mean what the fuck? Is this a bug or something?

As I said in another thread, I was 10 chapters into UC4 but poor Nate hasn't been in my PS4 since Doom arrived on Friday.

I get they wanted to make it easier to handle on consoles, but it just doesn't quite work. At least it doesn't for me and I was a big player of Quake 3 for example. The real problem for me is that these limitations crept into Snapmap, which limits what you can actually do with SP maps.

I got grudge sucked!
That Polygon quote....wow. I mean as a console gamer I had a hard time making that adjustment back in say 2001 maybe?

This is a 910 for me. Best shooter I've played since Wolfenstein: The New Order
I mean to be honest that's kinda faint praise. The roundup of FPS's in the last year or so has been pretty dire between Black Ops 3 and Hardlines dreadful and painfully bad single player campaigns... I guess Halo
5 was competent.

interesting to see critical consensus diverging from the community so dramatically. When's the last time that happened? God Hand?

This offers a considerably worse experience than even the half finished UT4. Why would I play this especially if UT is free.

That's not an actual Polygon quote. It's a quote from a 2000 review of an Alien game from Gamespot. It's there as a reference to Polygon's recent preview footage of the game.

lol nope

Did you breeze through on easy or something?

I'm about 10 hours in and no end in sight so far. Granted, I do explore the levels a lot and do all the challenges.

It was on 'Hurt me Plenty' -difficulty, but I didn't have much troubles with it and the difficulty dropped quite heavily when I found
the unlimited ammo rune
. Anyway, that 6h for campaign is my estimate based on 10.1 hrs playtime on my steam record and that includes complete SP campaign, few snapmaps, one original Doom map and couple of reruns on levels + time spend on menus (I think steam includes that). I could have low-balled the estimate by one hour for typical player, but during my run I did all the challenges and spend plenty of time for exploring the levels (found most of the secrets).

Regardless of the campaign length, the game is totally worth the full price because it doesn't contain a single dull moment and I recommend it whole heartily.

I don't know what the heck that person is talking. The game kicks into overdrive at the end and the boss encourage terse are some of the best ever in the game. Graphically this game is amazing and I thought hell looked awesome.

This game getting enything less than an 8 from reviewers just blows my mind when. You got garbage out there that is no where near as fun as this getting praise for no damn reason.

I'm so glad they didn't give this game to reviewers beforehand. It limes they don't know how to play a twitch based Shooter and used baby mode as a basis for their review. I'm so glad I've stopped caring about what reviewers have to say about games. Especially when it comes to skill based games like twitch shooters, shoot'em ups, fighting games, etc.

I'm having a blast. This'll be in my PS4 for a long time. This and Wolfenstein are the two best FPS's this generation. In fact, that bring an interesting point to mind....critics say that Doom and Wolfenstein are 'aight', but the gaming public generally looks at both as amazing games. We've received them MUCH better than reviewers have. The gulf is interesting, no?

No weapon pick-up = getting straight into the action instead of looking for weapons.
And the action is too frantic for you to have time to collect enough weapons before dying anyway.
Plus, you can pick up special weapons around the map.

I agree that the lack of free for all is disappointing but come one people!
It plays nothing like Call of Duty.
It's fast, it has a lot of verticality, you actually need skill.

They applied the same design philosophy to the MP than to the SP.
Old school MP might not be your thing but comparing it to COD is ridiculous.
