iOS Gaming August 2016 | A sever-ly hot summer

It's also important to consider that for The Witness, there are a lot of puzzles that require things being lined up visually or able to be seen from a distance and that could be a problem with a less powerful device.

It's not a thing I'd actually want to play on my phone (...I actually haven't finished it on PS4 yet anyway), but I'm happy they're working on it..

Im defo buying this (even at 40$) on iPAd the day it releases. my only concern is yea visually very taxing even on PS4. The iPad has a higher resolution display than a 1080p TV and it ran at 900p on PS4 when I played it. Hope there's a good compromise.

I am a bit worried about how to solve the damn
swamp
on iPad though. Worst part of the game for me. I HATE IT.

I just got a $25 iTunes card and I'm planning on buying a game (or a few) for my iPad Mini 2 before my trip to Europe next week.

I've been eyeing Final Fantasy 9 for a while, but it is a bit expensive, so I wouldn't be able to get much else with my card. Without any spoilers, is the story as big as FF7 in terms of characters having stories, and the main plot being a big satisfying adventure? I'm not a big fan of the really simple RPG stories like or ones that just aren't satisfying, especially needing to put so many hours to beat them.

The Room 3 is also one my wishlist, but I still have the 2nd one to play through first.

Titan Quest seems like it would be perfect (a big, Diablo style action RPG) but I've held off on it so far because the reviews I've read say the performance is a bit sluggish (which I could probably deal with if it's not TOO bad), it crashes (which I could also deal with if it saves often), and it has some bugs from the original game (more worrying, since I'd hate to hit a game halting bug).
Does the game play OK on 5-6in screen sizes? It might actually run better on my S7 Edge, apparently with Game Tuner it can run fairly smoothly, but if it's hard to play on a phone it might not be worth it.

Jade Empire seems like it'd be cool to have (only played it once back in the day), but I think I'll wait for some reviews about how it plays. Those screen shots of all those on screen buttons looked like it might be rough.

There's a bunch more on my wishlist (Dragon Quest 3+4-6, Crashlands, Love You To Bits, a few others) but some of those I'm waiting on sales or I'm feeling the itch to get them right now.

I'd go with The Quest HD or Legend of Grimrock over Titan Quest, if you're looking for a content-rich RPG

Some good stuff to look forward to this week, mainly Space Marshals 2 and Nightgate

Add Solitairica to that and that'll be my buy list for the week.

Then with Sorcery and Enyo in September I may have to break my "only 5 games" rule.

I am still mad that Space Marshals really is the only free apple app of the week I ever missed. And Pixelbite unfortunately puts their games like never on sale. That's a bummer.

It really is worth the asking price anyways, such a polished game with plenty of content.

For some reason I went from 'meh I won't get anything new tonight' to a considerable hype about Solitarica.

Anyone already played it on Steam?

I haven't but I think I'm looking forward to this the most too.

Ashame to admit it, but I still haven't even finished the first Space Marshalls. Not sold on Nightgate either.

Dungeon Warfare could be good though.

FFIX has a wonderful, charming story & cast. Best FF in that regard - maybe the besr JRPG too.

I'd also highly recommend this. It's also a great port.

Chaos Rings 3 is also probably the best original JRPG on mobile with a TON of content.

As far as Titan Quest, I really wish DotEmu could do some more to fix things up. I just got an iPhone 6S Plus and the game runs MUCH better than on my mini 2. But still have occasional problems with controls becoming unresponsive. And while I hoped the Plus screen size would still work, the buttons are still way too small.

It's a shame because it's a fantastic game.

There's some pretty interesting games coming:

A New Life at 99c makes you make decisions through a lifetime, and let's you do it all over again and again... and again. Trailer here. Comes out August 30.

The fifth Lifeline game has been soft-launched and is named Lifeline: Crisis Line. It's available in the Australian App Store.

And another virtual pet with Twitter-integration is coming out. The launch trailer of Tweechi can be found here.

Just completed the tutorial of Solitairica, and it does very well in introducing you to one mechanism at a time. I like how you have to remove cards, that is either one above or below your active card, and that you get granted different spells in your fight against these minions. It seems very solid so far, and now colors are coming into the mix. Unfortunately my iPad Pro ran out of battery, so I can't wait trying it out some more tonight.

Lost Portal CCG on the other hand were very confusing with a rather busy user interface when it comes to the actual card battling, and there isn't any introductory tutorial as such. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it when I get into the manual, but I just wish it were a little better at explaining what's going on. There's some nice sound effects for each card (like a dragon breath when you draw a dragon card), and some nice noise in the background when visiting towns, making it all come to life. I'm sure this one will be very interesting as well.

I have Titan Quest on my ipad pro 9.7 inch and it runs very, very well. I only notice an occasional hitch when there's massive activity on screen but, even then, it doesn't effect gameplay at all.

It's one of the best Diablo type games ever made (IMO) with great character classes, mythological monsters, epic and legendary class equipment and infinite playability. I wouldn't miss it even if I was stuck chugging through it on a lower spec tablet or phone.

Rush Rally 2 has also been updated to include cockpit view, upgraded cloud features etc.

That is great though I somehow prefer the helicopter view which was also used in the first installment. Do not know why exactly. Nevertheless the cockpit view feels great. It is astonishing that mobile has such a great rally sim.

One of the best racing games for iOS. Love it.

I'll probably get blasted for this, but have you guys tried WRC The Official Game by BigBen?
They patched the controls, you can adjust the sensitivity of the tilt. It's actually very playable and pretty fun now.

I'm a sucker for licensed motorsport games. SBK 16 is amazing on mobile.

Thanks for your imps, especially on Lost Portal, which I think I will skip for now having little time to read a manual, etc.

But I also picked up Solitairica and am really enjoying it. Very clever use of Solitare mechanics and extremely polished. About the only thing I dislike is when some monster or whatever talks ... I'd rather have just the dialog instead of the incredibly annoying squeaky noises that spout out. Otherwise, great game.

After a hellish day I'm finally ab,e to download Solitairica.

Can't wait to play it...hope it's good as I'm reading.

Solitairica is addicting. If you have ever played spider solitaire before this game is based around that but things like spells, Turn-based combat, rouge-like gameplay, magical items, and different deck types are thrown in to make it stand out above the crowd. It's probably my favorite rendition of the solitaire template that I've ever played. Definite recommend from me.

Ok, Solitairica is the real deal.

It's GLORIOUS.

I admit I was expecting mild disappointment, not sure why. But I was utterly wrong.
I should be sleeping. Like since one-two hours ago.
Instead I'm charging the phone to play 'just one more run'.
I know I'll regret this tomorrow. But resistance is futile.

I was already almost sold during the tutorial (the app is really slick) and I wished it went faster because I knew already how to play after years of solitaire and Puzzle Quest.
But what really sealed the deal was my second run...which turned out to be tactically different than previous one thanks to the different powers I bought.
And the third one...and the forth...and so on.
The powers make all the difference, letting you
to turn the odds and the rng to your favor.
You can even combine them for powerful combos.
I can only imagine the sheer difference with different characters/decks (unlockable).
And items too.

Great game, highly recommended.

Btw plays wonderfully on iPhone 6S, portrait mode. Didn't even tried on iPad. It's so good on iPhone.

And thanks god the devs went the premium route...I can see how easily the game would have been totally ruined if f2p.
They deserve your money. Now.

I grabbed Reigns and played that a bit while spending many hours on planes the last week.

It has all the components that should add up to a game I like, but it doesn't quite gel with me.

One aspect of the game that is totally eluding me is the dungeon sections, so that probably isn't helping my enjoyment or reaching all the content. I'm obviously missing something, as I just wander around aimlessly until I die. Only once have I managed to retrieve something and by that time it was too late. Not particularly great at the combat either.

Can't say I enjoyed dying over and over because I had too much money either (crusades/silk road are definitely a mixed blessing).

Will give it a bit more time and hope to find something more to hook me.

Probably you just played too few games.
Dungeons are essential to solving the game (i.e.: fulfilling the quests)...you will be vaguely told what to do or look for eventually...depends on what you have unlocked during the years.
You sure have noticed signs over the doors, and names.

As for the combat, there are some characters that explain this to you but generally, if you don't have special items I won't mention, a parry followed by an attack means a special attack.
As a general rule...parry till you are near your opponent then attack.
You will learn new moves later on.

Can't say I enjoyed dying over and over because I had too much money either (crusades/silk road are definitely a mixed blessing).

Will give it a bit more time and hope to find something more to hook me.

Know that there are permanent powers (permanent as they stick even after death) that prevent dying for being too rich, too weak, etc...
You won't be undefeatable because it's difficult to have all 4 in a single game (but possibile, I did it once) but you'll die for other reasons anyway :p

I liked the game at first but it really clicked with me after I reset the first time (you'll understand this when you'll see it if you didn't already, I don't want to spoil anything).
I guess the devs could have explained this a bit better...but play let's say till this century and you will see what I mean.

Lumines Puzzle & Music though.. it's gonna be one of the best games released on iOS ever.

And A New Life comes out the day before too.

Be aware that Lumines Puzzle & Music is pretty light on content. It only contains two set of songs and can feel a bit light. I love the series so it's not a problem but that's something to keep in mind.

I just need that one song... Which I can't remember the name of. And two sets is a good start to me, and hopefully they'll add packs through IAP later.

I hope the free multiplayer version the week after also turns out well. Plan on playing it with my family.

Solitaria is a serious GOTY contender.

Sword&Poker meets Puzzle Quest meets Spider Solitaire.

Love that enemies are always different, as the powers and items...keep you on your toes even at first levels.

It's even light on battery...this will be a mainstay for a long time on my phone...it's sitting next to Card Crawl, Out There and Warhammer Quest already.

For the curious...I asked the devs and iCloud sync between devices is coming soon.
