Rogue One Reviews & Impressions (Spoiler Tags Required)

Going back to watch the opening of Episode IV now, Vader's anger in saying 'tear this ship apart' etc. seems totally justified. Great stuff.

This scene though... LOL. They've literally just chased this ship halfway across the galaxy with the knowledge the plans are onboard, and the Imperial officer refuses to shoot an escape pod because it 'likely short-circuited'. It was dumb to begin with and now I can't help but laugh in disbelief.

This bothers me more every time I rewatch the film, but ... Especially Ep4, these films are riddled with quite flimsy and arbitrary devices that don't bear scrutiny.

But much like someone said yesterday regarding the Christmas special, not only do you have to see it as a product of its time, but you also have to remember, they didn't really at the time have an idea of what they were making; of how much scrutiny the work would have to bear.

"Not ready for the burden were you."

From that point of view you start more to appreciate how incredibly robust many many elements - locations, mythology, technology etc, actually are.

Yeah. I mean, for Rogue One to retroactively increase my enjoyment of IV and look at the film in a different way... that's an achievement in itself.

It's crazy how far the franchise has come, and I'm loving all the connections between the films, books, comics, animated shows etc. It's very clear they have a plan and they're taking their time to do it right.

after working in german bureaucracy I could totally see this happening IRL tho... But yes, I get what you mean :D!

Was getting caught part of your plan?
I forgot that we need to add the scene with Padme giving birth to the twins when Leia claims on Endor to remember her mother.
I guess one way to fix this little problem is that she thinks her adopted mother was still her real mother, and that her remark of said mother being "very sad" implies that Mrs. Organa knew about the truth.

Of course, this is all for naught if Mrs. Organa is mentioned in Rogue One or is still kicking in the comics considering Leia explicitly says she died when she was little.

Last resort I can think of is that Padme somehow force ghosted into Leia's childhood.

These watching orders make less and less sense as we move forward

I agree, although it's very jarring watching them in chronological order instead of release date due to the changes (not always for the better) in special effects. The best way to view them is to simply start with A New Hope and forget about the prequels. There's literally nothing redeeming about them aside from maybe a single ten minute sequence in each. And the ending of Revenge of the Sith fucking ruined the ending of the Blu-ray version of Return of the Jedi. Fuck that Nooooooooooooooooooooooise. Lucas literally drained all gravitas from it for not goddamn reason other than "Haha, fuck you fans, I can do what I want!".

Anyway, for those that actually haven't ever heard about this, or simply haven't seen it yet, here's the remastered version of A New Hope (Empire Strikes Back as well, but he's currently working on version 2.5), without the special edition crap added (while some improvements were made by Lucas, they were not worth the trade offs). This is no mere generic fan edit either. It's pretty fucking spectacular, and you won't find a better version unless Disney officially rereleases the original theatrical cuts on Blu-ray.

I really really hope we get the original cuts of the original trilogy on bluray one day.

I reckon they will "remake" them in Clone Wars/Rebels style before that, though.

I'm not surprised, but it's not something I knew either, so ...

I really fucking hate and can be quite militant about spoilers. To a fault, probably. I preach caution, discretion etc etc. Everyone has different standards, and levels of information, but just play it safe safe safe

I was very impressed by this. Having kept myself free of spoilers, I was very surprised by the darker tone and the emphasis on tragic heroics. All the emotional beats hit perfectly. The CGI characters didn't bother me at all,
Grand Moff Tarkin
in particular looked great to me.

The music didn't click with me even though I usually like Michael Giacchino. I appreciate that he was trying to bridge the generally impressionistic old school John Williams of Episode IV with the more operatic later scores but none of his leitmotivs or themes resonated with me. All the best musical moments seem to reference Binary Sunset/Force Theme or the Imperial March. But the orchestration and arrangements mesh well with Episode IV so it's not really a problem, just more of a missed opportunity. I feel the score should have taken the militaristic elements of the Williams themes and build on them for a true war movie feel. Instead, it's just serviceable.

I also feel a lot of backstory and character detail was left on the cutting room floor, most noticeably with Forest Whitaker's character. The editing in general wasn't as tight as we're used to with Star Wars movies and the barrage of opening scenes hopping between planetary locations and flashbacks felt very amateurish. The location title cards really didn't help, just drew more attention to the problem.

Enough with the criticisms because holy shit, once the narrative gets going it's all dramatic/humorous pay-off and great action set-pieces. The third act action sequence is perfect and IMHO better than the climax of The Force Awakens. The fact that there are actual casualties helps to raise the stakes.

What a great addition to the Star Wars canon - I'm glad it's a one-off and not part of some spin-off franchise. I suspect this one will age well and be more appreciated as time goes on.

It's a good time to be a fan, gentlebeings.

To be fair, the assumption later was that the plans were on board. Do you want to be the one to destroy the escape pod and answer to Vader when he wants to know if it had the plans on it or not, and you don't know?

While TFA gave me some smile but still feels like it is aping ANH, Rogue One is a huge, massive improvement and I really loved it. Great characters, action that never pulls you out, a clear plot, the way it swerves into ANH... it's so perfect. Jennah is so much a better main character than Rey.

Also I don't get some posts here, the movie I watched had
the storm trooper scene

There's a couple extremely short, slightly cringey fanservice moments, but not enough to affect my opinion in the slightest. Excellent film. Seeing it again in a few hours 😎

The only fanservice moment that made me groan was Jyn bumping into
Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan
using the exact same lines from IV just to hammer us over the head with the reference. Everything else worked just fine.

I take it the
R2D2 C3PO
scene right? What else?

So can this really be enjoyed by someone that's never seen any other Star Wars movie before? Asking for a friend (really)

They'll be wondering what the fuck is going on for the first hour or so, then it really doesn't matter because explosions and spaceships.

i think it can, but many of the nods and winks will go lost on them.

After the movie was over, a friend of mine asked me whether or not that Tarkin guy was in ANH :)

Also, without having seen ANH, i feel like the ending would fall kinda flat. So many sacrifices just for this one tiny ship to 'get away'.
The "payoff" to Rogue One is what happens in A New Hope. I'm not sure how i would feel about it without having seen Episode IV at all.

edit: fuck i am so sorry for that untagged spoiler, i keep hopping between the SPOILER and impressions threads. (because i feel many who haven't seen it value the impressions of those who don't) ...

What Boss Doggie said. Didn't have a problem with the other one. I feel like there were more, but I forget. Seeing it again, so I'll be on the lookout.

Why would someone see this without seeing Episode 4? If they do, that's their problem, not the film's.

In case you missed it, i answered the (quoted) question whether or not the movie can be enjoyed by someone who never watched a Star Wars movie.

And the issues that this creates are in no way the film's problems. - never implied they were.

Watch the movies in release order. Skip the PT.

I mean yeah but I was just curious if the movie showed narrative integrity by itself or if it heavily relied on pre-existing knowledge of the franchise for it to make sense, since it's the first time that it's not an "Episode"

Saw it yesterday.... I uh, I don't know. Mixed feelings.

I missed a sense of urgency and suspense and an investment in the main characters (even though I did really like K-2SO). Ben Mendelsohn's potential was wasted on a forgettable villain. Even for a Star Wars movie, there were too many hollywood-y moments of convenience and immortality. I found the
CGI
cameo's by
Tarkin and Leia
to be balls deep into the uncanny valley, which took me out of the experience.

All in all, I did have a blast though. The action and effects (both special and practical ) were top notch, except for the aforementioned stuff.

I fell madly in love with Felicity Jones btw. What a gorgeous woman. My god.

Pretty huge untagged character spoiler on this page. Some of you are hopeless.

I really don't get what the impressions say about cut stuff from the trailer, since I thought all of them were in the film.

I mostly liked it except from:

- The CGI characters, the uncanny valley really takes me out of the movie.
- The score. I usually find Giachinno to fall below expectations and this was not an exception.

I also have to admit that I dozed of for 10-15 minutes due to it being a midnight screening and I having sleep issues for the past few days. It was hilarious since you had people all dressed up and hyped, and some of them must have freaked out seeing me dozing off in a STAR WARS PREMIERE :-D

well, then you haven't been paying all that much attention, really (either to the trailers, or the movie). Many 'iconic' shots from the trailer, but also many 'cringy' lines of dialogue were not part of the actual movie. :)

I'm a little relieved to hear this. I think the trailers seemed to have way to many lines which were like dialogue versions of "money shots". It made the dialogue overall feel a bit wonky.

I didn't like it, I was expecting way more.

I thought they did very little with the universe besides the obvious conection with
A New Hope
. Characters weren't that great either IMO.

It's not bad, just disappointing. I liked Episode VII way more.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
I'm still hype. Got reserved seats for Saturday vs going opening night like VII.

Switched so the boy child could bring a couple friends as the wife said he could as a Xmas break treat. They get out for break on Friday.

Jyn's whole motivational / rallying speech is still a bit cringy / forced, but the
"I rebel" line
isn't even in the film, iirc.

I loved Episode 7, I didn't realise that Rogue One is the movie I wanted instead.

It was brilliant. It hit a perfect tone for the events that transpired, did about the right amount with the history of the universe, and brought the soundtrack much more to the fore than Ep7 did.

Tarkin and Leia were odd, but I'm okay with that, I think we're not far from the time where Young Han Solo could be done from some pictures of Harrison Ford and not an actor maybe. Nice to see some ANH Squadron leaders return too.

Vader looked nothing short of the universe breaking badass but something was off about his costume and I can't put my finger on it.

These are minor niggles, though. I loved the film, and the ending perfectly explains why we've never seen these people before.
