Castlevania |OT| A miserable little pile of episodes - Netflix 7/7

This was designed as 3 animated movies 10 years ago.
The moment the Netflix thing came up there was already a 2nd season confirmed.
Only real news was a bump from 4 to 8 episodes recently.

Okay, ignore all that then... It STILL doesn't justify most of the repeated exposition, especially the scene with Belmont being called to the church.

I think I've at the very least made my case pretty well here...

  • It's out of character for the Bishop to offer aid to "heretics" like Belmonts.
  • The scene only reiterates things we already know, namely Belmonts are excommunicated, the seekers are going to be killed by villagers at dark, and the Bishop is corrupt.
  • The scenes drags on long, and even the interaction between Belmont and the Bishop was pretty weak.

It's not the only scene like this, but it is the most egregious.

No, Street Fighter 2 animated movie and SatAM Sonic get my vote.
I remember not loving the Street Fighter movie.

I never liked anything Sonic or Mario did on tv or movies, so I will have to agree to disagree with you.

Naah, with only 4 episodes they barely scratch the surface.
It felt like just a prologue
It could still fall apart and it is early, but I mean it just felt so true to the videogames.

Not saying it was perfect (the animation, writing and VA were just ok), but because it felt like a true adaptation of a videogame series I loved growing up it really worked. At least for me.

For me I personally have never seen that before. Usually these kind of adaptations are horrible in my experience.

I agree with him on Sonic SatAM

That shit was legendary among its peers at the time

Probably the only Sonic adaption that was good

I'm surprised by the amount of people in this thread who have never played a Castlevania game. Play Aria of Sorrow for the GBA and then work your way through the Igavania's on the DS. The NES games hold up pretty well, but they are very difficult. I'd skip Castlevania 2 though.

I've played nearly all of them its just been a while since the earlier versions and I wasn't always a fan of the games after they got more and more anime. I did enjoy the first Lords of Shadow even with the drastic departures from the original lore.

Not a fan of Alucard being blonde, and the fact that that's my only real complaint is a pretty damn good sign.

EDIT: He says before googling Alucard concept art and seeing that he's supposed to be blonde...

I think that's the exact same art that's used in SotN's dialog portrait. His sprite clearly has the same color hair too.

Castlevania 3 is black hair though. Don't really know why there's a difference, but SotN is definitely the most iconic version of him for me.

Voice recordings were literally finished last week. Season 2 is a thing.

Oh that's right, I totally forgot about that.

Castlevania 3 Alucard was essentially a normal sized Dracula. The SotN is definitely the iconic version as you say.

For some strange reason the skateboarding California dude 90's Captain N version never caught on..........it's a mystery why.

This is a fucking cock tease. You can't cover anything in four episodes. I'm on the last episode and they haven't even begun to the scratch the base of the story arch.

Holy Shit how did I miss this, I watched the hell out of that show as a kid. But given the wack ass version of Simon they had I am not surprised. Hell the time line wouldn't even match up with the games and ARRRG fuck you Captain N!

Prepare to hate your childhood.

Just finished it this was great. I wasn't expecting much and they pretty much knocked it out of the park. Can't wait for season 2.

I also need more animated work from Ellis. Maybe Netflix can do a Planetary series.

That's exactly what makes Captain N so great. Captain N is so damn dumb in some pretty funny ways.

Why is that surprising?

When is the last time we had a new Castlevania game that was good?

I love the series but it seems like it is dead.

I guess 2010 was a really long time ago now that you mention it.

Biggest problem is that Konami as a game company is now dead, so Castlevania is sadly dead by association.

I can't wait to see Trevor, Dracula, Lisa and the rest recreated in the Fox Engine for the brand new Castlevania
Pachinko
game

2008 since the last legit Castlevania, LoS1 was a good game but not a great Castlevania imo.
I agree.

And even the good games were not really massive hits. I feel a lot of people missed out on the GBA and DS games, which I thought were fantastic but they never seemed to penetrate the way the NES and PSX games did.

In the end its a can of tomato soup being stretched out to feed 8 people. It needed another 10 years of polish. You have an hour and a half of time to fit an engaging three act story. There's no reason to not hit this out of the park.

Because this is the first act. There are 8 more episodes that will most likely be the middle and end of this story.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
I liked what we got in terms of art, music, and design. Story felt needlessly convoluted as to add faux depth while not really going anywhere in the first season. It's solid, but not omfg amaze.

Give it a solid B, but there is enough to improve upon in season 2 to get to an A.

For some reason I was envisioning a saturday morning cartoon when this was announced, not a dark and gritty anime.

Dark and gritty anime makes a lot more sense, and I like the first episode, but I still want to see what a saturday morning cartoon version would look like.

We already got a Saturday morning cartoon version

"there is a season 2"

There wasn't when they were producing the series. How long do you think animation takes to make?

Sorry, i wasn't being clear. It was out of character to have Belmont come to the church and tell him to just leave in the same breath he's talking about murdering the seekers. There is zero reason for him to try and make nice with Trevor.

They always established the villagers were coming for the seekers. Trevor already overheard the villagers were going after them at sundown, hence him telling the be seekers to leave the ENTIRE episode before hand.
I'm assuming the with the knowledge of the fighting prowess the belmonts are known for, and what we see trevor do to his men later and earlier, he wanted to avoid the unnecessary fight and deaths it would take to put Trevor down, not to mention the chaos it would cause before nightfall, makes sense to me. Either ask Trevor nicely to leave the next morning after maiming 2 of your men or send 20 men and lose 15 to kill him, and cause further unrest in the town, particularly with demons attacking nightly.

The first episode had atrocious dialogue but it did improve throughout the episodes.

Not too bad, I'll give the second season a watch. There's potential.

i love trevor's characterization, i was worried initially but he's the type of reluctant hero jerk i enjoy

plus he starts the show drunk and getting repeatedly hit in the balls, which is fun

sypha is cool too. alucard is an attractive pale dude as expected, will see how it goes with him since he needs to be a major character for a while obv

Finished watching the mini-series. I enjoyed it and give it a thumbs-up.

Very much felt like part 1 of a 3-part arc. Usually a season consists of 12 episodes for an animated series, so I wasn't expecting closure with what we had. Art was great, but animation was really stiff for the most part. I'm surprised that a Netflix original would have budget issues considering (1) it's only 4 episodes and (2) it's Netflix. The fight scenes were great though and give a lot of anime a run for the money.

The humor didn't bother me, and I appreciated Trevor's sardonic wit.

The scene with the priest in episode 3/4 and Trevor was confusing. Why would the priest call him over to exonerate him? What was the favor he wanted? Also, some of the dialogue was stilted. I get that some of the background needs to be laid for viewers not familiar with Castlevania lore, but I don't need it coming from several sources over and over.

Music was also forgettable, which is surprising given the pedigree of the series (SOTN still goat).

Other than that, looking forward to season 2.

I'm like halfway through the second episode and loving it so far. I really need a Simon's Quest style game with the story of this series.

I think people are thinking too hard about this being a season. It was not akin to an anime OVA where it's sometimes a "movie" length production split into 3-4 separate "episodes" (ie. Macross Plus, Endless Waltz)

That's already a thing. Castlevania 3 Pachinko exists since 2011 I believe. It was the first one IIRC.

We though it was a sign a CV3 was imminent.

Ha.

Just started watching this and wow, love it! On last episode but like the writing so far.

Also love how much of a smart ass Trevor is.

Finished, that was entertaining as heck.

McTavish did a wonderful job as Dracula, equal parts sympathetic and terrifying.

Trevor was my biggest worry, both in VA and character arc but Armitage was legit good in the role and Trevor himself is 'too cool for school' but without being too overbearing.

The Priest (and really the whole church) was cartoonishly evil...weakest part of the series.

Can't wait to see what they'll do with Grant Da Nasty?
