The CEO of Patreon has taken to YouTube to explain why they closed down recently the Patreons of people like IGD and Lauren Southern, explaining their Policy about inciting or participating in activities that can cause harm or death.

Lauren's patreon was closed down because she took part of Defend Europe Mission operations, which attempts to block ship that rescues refugees. She claimed she had nothing to do with them and was only observing, but Patreon has clips exposing her activities with Defend Europe Mission, directly instructing the ship operator how to block the rescue ships. She has also said in an interview that she would keep doing so. "If Politicians won't stop the boats, we'll stop the boats."

As for IGD, they have taken part in other activities such as covering train tracks with cement. They apparently warn train operators of this, but those actions can still cause harm and for those reasons IGD was also banned from Patreon.

He also expresses a desire to be more transparent about those issues in the future.

TLDR: This isn't about politics. This is about people who take actions that can cause harm or death and doing it as part of their content creation. They don't care if you are left or right or whatever. If your content creation hints or shows you taking part in activities that can cause harm or casualties, you're out.

I hear those Defend Europe operations are going swimmingly.

Didn't the fuckers get stopped and brought back to port?

I know Sam Harris and a few others have decided to leave Patreon over the principle of the matter, be interesting to see where this goes. Private company of course, can do what they like, just like Twitter, market will judge whether its a good decision or not im sure.

listen to the mad man
The clarification is unnecessary; this was obvious from the beginning. The problem is that the alt-right have decided rules don't apply to them if they disagree with the rules. Okay, but consequences still do.

Isn't she Canadian? I've noticed quite a few Northerners pushing the alt-right agenda. I though Canada was pretty liberal. Is it just a cash grab?
She's Canadian but a very hateful one, she's somehow worse than Tomi Lahren and would fit right in with the Republican party.
Canada is not exempt from having hateful racist people, whether it's an act for money or she truly believes her disgusting crap I don't know but she does profit from that hate.

People thought the US and UK were pretty liberal before their colossal fuck-ups last year. Shitheels live everywhere, and in much greater numbers than most expect or are comfortable with.

Well the alt-right was complaining that Patreon had banned Lauren's Patreon but not others like IGD (which they did afterward, which I guess the alt-right thought they were only doing to save face, but the Patreon CEO explains in the video that no, they didn't do it to save face.)

She is, though I think she's more right wing than the Conservative party. Going to Wikipedia, I saw this:

Political career
In 2015, Southern was a candidate in the Canadian Federal Election representing the Libertarian Party in the district of Langley—Aldergrove.[9] She was briefly removed by the party as a candidate, but was eventually reinstated with support from Breitbart News and The Rebel Media.[14] The election was eventually won by Conservative candidate Mark Warawa. Southern received 535 votes, finishing last.

which I guess it to be expected if you're not with the liberals, conservatives, NDP, or green, but hey. Still fun to see her in last.

Nah this is just assumptions. I've seen people who are outraged about this and they genuinely think it's because people can't accept different opinions and that they are silencing them away.

Laura Southern is a disgusting racist scumbag, I'm glad she was banned. Now go after the rest of these right wing white supremacist extremists.

Ok but what if they don't agree with the consequences? Checkmate liberals. /s Carl next please for sending his cronies to harass Anita Sarkeesian

Good. I'm glad a company like Patreon is taking a stance on hateful shit especially from the alt-right *coughtTwittercough*

one & done

wait, over this? just when i couldnt respect that dude any less

He doesnt condone what she does, he said he doesnt really know much about her, all he said was that he cannot risk his funding based on Patreons ability to just take it away if they disagreed with his politics.

He masks his bigotry in playing a "rationalists. His discourse isn't honest, he's manipulative.

Cant say I feel this way, but to teach their own

And presumably now it's been clarified that that's not Patreon's intention, he will immediately issue a correction.

Hint: he won't.

Well, it's clear it isn't about politics. The video clearly shows that they use reals, not feels, to make decisions, and provided video evidence.

They didn't take away their funding because of their politics.

He's showboating

Wouldnt necessarily call it showboating, hes going to lose a lot of money doing this, I think he gets on average $11,000 an episode off patreon (If third party sites are right), which is a huge amount, and you have to think hell lose a lot of that transitioning it to his own site.

IIRC, it stands for It's Going Down and they appeared to be some kind of activist group.

Oh:
It’s Going Down is a digital community center from anarchist, anti-fascist, autonomous anti-capitalist and anti-colonial movements. Our mission is to provide a resilient platform to publicize and promote revolutionary theory and action.

They're @IGD_News on Twitter

He still gains recognition for 'taking a stand' against Patreon for them 'going against' his political ideals.

also, he will gain the full cut of donations now instead of giving a cut Patreon

i doubt it's going to effect him negatively at all

his minions will follow

I think depending on your stance on Harris you can read it a multitude of ways and not be any clearer to the truth, if this is how you choose to see it then I cant change that.

1) this is no excuse, he could learn something from a cursory google search
2) as usual, harris wants to appear principled over an issue that's not even related to his nonsense - this thread clearly shows the actual harm of her atrocious campaign, and hwy that's not "politics they disagreed with".

he won't own this, because that's not his M.O. the hard atheist/skeptic community remains a mess because of garbage like this

Ha ha of course he did.

Sam Harris has never met an alt-right bigot he's not conviently ready to take a "stand" over on "principle"

What I gather from listening to him is he finds himself running into an issue whereby he has been falsely maligned by people who have taken his work out of context and thus feels it hard to label others to whom he has not done the due diligence. Hes had conversations over this before where he tries to sus out how to navigate the world where peoples reputations are ruined because someone in power disagrees with them, or a particular group deems them radical despite sufficient evidence.
