Steam turns on for me when I turn my computer on, would that be an active user? I haven't played a steam game in at least 9 months
In before nobody reads this and we get the same users making fools of themselves in the next thread.People who have booted up a game within the last month, that's why it says "players" and not "users". Steam's number is more conservative than PSN and XBL.

Valve is actually relatively open about this number, relative to their console counterparts. They count "Active Users" as someone who owns a game and has played a game within the last month. So "Total Users' is actually significantly higher.
OP could use an adjustment. In before nobody reads this and we get the same users making fools of themselves in the next thread.

I can see where he is coming from, PC has been taking away attention from the console market for the last few years now. That is why the ps4 pro exists in the first place. Despite PS4 taking a larger market share this generation, the overall 3 console user base has shrunk from the ps/wii/60 era.

It's really a shame that Steam has practically a monopoly on the PC gaming market.
Do you also believe Xbox 360 sold better than PS3?Umm what? Was PSN always larger than XBL in monthly users? When did this become a thing?
Thanks, I really appreciate your help. Can't wait till I build my new rig and can actually play my PC gamesHere is an explanation, would probably be helpful to put in the OP.
Nope. You have to play a game within 30 days to be considered activeSteam turns on for me when I turn my computer on, would that be an active user? I haven't played a steam game in at least 9 months
so any one with "run steam when my pc starts" counts as active user... ok legit and real statistics

Because people will try to downplay this, as always - active account = logged in within the last month

This is weird, I swear we had a topic in the last few years where their "active users" was over 100m+ and all that was said was active users were those logged in within the last month.
So have they changed their active user metric to those who have played a game which is why it went down and then has risen again?
Mad Edit Skills:
Yes here we go, Steam has over 125m active accounts
And the active user quote for that topic:

How many people are actually playing games on Steam and PSN tho. thats what I am most curious about.
125m active accounts and 67m active users monthly.
67m people have played a Steam game within the last 30 days.
during the Xb360 era XBL never had 50 or even 40 million Monthly Active Users
in 2012, XBL had a TOTAL of 40 million User(Accounts)
on topic:
months old news, btw

A couple of years ago =/= 360 era... but yes, they did have a bit of a decline in both 2015 and 2016, but their last report shows that they've had the highest MAUs ever.
This gen has been so good for Steam or PC gaming. PS4/X1 was a disappointment on the hardware/performance side thanks to AMD BUT the funny thing is AMD is also a provider of Ryzen recently for PC users which has been getting a lot of traction thus more potential Steam users.. With word of Jaguar continuing on the console space, Steam should easily grow more.
Yeah, you're using your PS4.
Steam auto logging you in doesn't mean you are using steam.
I have it installed and it auto logs me in, haven't opened steam in weeks.
Just busy is all, a new build will be coming next yearYou got to boot up a game in recent time to be counted, so you are not counted
But havent play any Steam game for 9 months? Why not uninstall it?
Crazy considering Origin, GOG, Minecraft standalone, World of Tanks, Uplay, Battle.net, most big MMOs, whatever distribution service Crossfire uses...
PC gaming dying for 25 years and counting.
And Ms didn't have an OS monopoly in the last 30 years. They don't though

If you want to play games on a pc you need Steam.
If you are a dev you "need" to be on Steam.
An app you install on your computer vs. $400 hardware. I'm actually impressed PSN still has more active users.
Well you also need the hardware to make use of the app.
You can run a good chunk of the games on Steam on a toaster.Well you also need the hardware to make use of the app.
There are so many alternatives to Steam. It's really a shame that Steam has practically a monopoly on the PC gaming market.
I am pretty sure it is proven that Doom can be run on a toaster. You can run a good chunk of the games on Steam on a toaster.
I recon very few PS3 and Vita is out there that's active these days. Even if they make up 10 mil active user still impressive that Sony may have 60 mil paid sub while steam is free. But good to see PC game is getting bigger.
PSN users, this counts PS3/vita/ps tvAn app you install on your computer vs. $400 hardware. I'm actually impressed PSN still has more active users.
Excellent point. Still those numbers are good for steam. But I think it's dangerous that pc market is dominted by one platform.PSN is different from PS Plus users. Sony doesn't have 70M paying users (other than buying their consoles).
Steam numbers are really bad though, I can run Steam on a modified Game & Watch. PC is irrelevant.
Doesn't STEAM automatically download and start up a game at least once a month without PC users actually doing anything?
Doesn't STEAM automatically download and start up a game at least once a month without PC users actually doing anything? These numbers are definitely bloated if this is true.
Yeah the problem with this math is something very simple. Internet cafes.
Yes, Steam has 67 million accounts connected to the internet on a monthly basis. But how many of those are from internet cafes in China and Korea where Steam is a platform for Dota2 and PUBG?
Those aren't *monetised users* who realistically are going to buy a 60 dollar AAA game from their storefront. Nor are they high spending first world customers, they're internet cafe users who have a much more limited spending habits for their games than play from home users in developed Western countries.
In contrast, for Sony their 70 million user base is far more valuable. Playstation install base is much more focused in developed countries and that 70 million will consist of far more people participating in the mainstream boxed game market, and not the internet cafe gaming culture of Korea/China/Asia in general.
There's a lot more spending power in Sony's base, and a lot less China involved in general, these numbers don't indicate a tip towards PC as a platform in the Western boxed game market, and by all reports the Western PC boxed game market has plateaued recently, there have been several reports of Valve's overall revenues being stable in the last few years. The growth segment has all been in games as a service.
So tl;dr don't take these numbers as either PC gaming or Valve "winning" the console war, there's a helluva lot more to them because their numbers are driven by PUBG and Dota2 in China which is not a place where selling discrete 60 dollar games to an install base is a thing.
The fuck am I reading?Doesn't STEAM automatically download and start up a game at least once a month without PC users actually doing anything? These numbers are definitely bloated if this is true.
