How is doomguy a failure? We even had two stellar doom entries this gen.

Chuck Rock was super cool. I remember seeing the magazine reviews and loving the graphics and the Flintstones humour. I played it recently on an emulator and it was nowhere near as good as I thought it would be - gameplay is weak.

Croc looked amazing at the time. I remember loving the literal 30 seconds I played it for. It was probably shit though, I never went back to play more of it.

This bad boy suddenly came back to mind.
Yet another bland run of the mill platform game trying to capture that Mario/Sonic magic.
I've somehow remembered it after 25 years, so definitely forgotten.

Jetpacks on afterburner for our nameless Sega arcade and Master System icon. Dude never even got a name, he was just called "Harrier". The game was a huge success and the character was mascot status alright, even ported to something like 20+ devices. Sega still did not name that 80s blonde haired jetpacking hero. However, bosses in game were named after game designers and even Sega's then president.

You missed out on a fantastic little game. It really was excellent.

Klonoa kinda felt like a pseudo-mascot for Namco for a while.

Honestly, the Klonoa series of games is so rampantly ignored and yet has some of the best platforming games I've ever played, it's fucking criminal. Especially the PS2 game (in my personal top 3 of all time) is completely overlooked and that's the best one out of what is really a stellar line-up of games. Even the beach volleyball game he had on PS1 was pretty great and for a while they did seem to intend to make him the Namco mascot, but none of those games ever sold decent numbers.

Even Bubsy gets more attention than he does, it's legit pretty frustrating.

Reading this and it's clear Sega wanted him as a mascot. Sega could have ended up with anything really. I like Sonic but I would have liked a character from Altered Beast to be the mascot just as well.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Mario has dominated the mascot scene, yes GEX, spryo etc. are dead but they weren't trying to be mascots.

They made a sequel / revival recently!

I bought this game. Honestly, it kinda sucked. I know it was the same guy who did the original, but the updated graphics were really off-putting. And there was just something about the gameplay that I cant put my finger on that I didn’t like.

Bummer. I never played it but I know a lot of folks were over the moon when it was announced.

I think Sony did want either Spyro or Crash as mascots. It seems today they're not interested in having one. They don't really need one. Sony and Microsoft seem fairly decent just releasing exclusives. Nintendo and previously Sega tend to run more with mascots. However, if Nintendo ditched their mascots...they wouldn't be the Nintendo we know.

I still have mine too! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I remember the reviews in EGM(?) glowing so much, yet it really isn't a great fighting game. Pure gimmickry, but I loved it.
EGM is pretty much where I read on anything prior to buying in the 90's (considering what the internet was it at all). It was pure gimmick. However, I had a cousin who didn't get the joke apparently and would smash his controller against the screen every time he (Ichabod Clay) died.
