The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Mr. Aonuma Gameplay Demonstration

BOTW has I think 4 different types of boomerangs, a remote bomb that can change shape IIRC, and bomb arrows. Granted no hookshot is a shame.

We're not talking about item progression in the old games in terms of unlocking new areas a la Metroid, that's a whole different story and it doesn't work in a game like BOTW which is precisely why you unlock all the tools at the beginning. You still use those tools to achieve different things, you just don't unlock them at a set pace like you did before.

In terms of core Zelda combat you're pressing a button to swing the same sword 99% of the time. You might do a lengthy side quest for an upgrade but it never feels remotely worth it unless you just want to see the quest itself. Sure, boomerangs stun, can you charge it with lightning during a storm before throwing it to electrocute an enemy? Can you throw several and make them spin around you in a circle? Can you find a rare type of boomerang that does more damage? Can you use them for the whole game if you so wish?

Big difference between items you get that help move the game forward and weapons you get that make you feel stronger. I'm talking about the latter and BotW has about 30x as many as any previous Zelda game. If you wanna talk about the way BotW changed the feeling of progression for the worse then sure, the divine beasts suck ass. But combat in Zelda has never been remotely as interesting until BotW.
I don't think you know what "game changer" means

On the one hand I really liked what I saw.
The fuse ability looks awesome and seems like it has the potential for a lot of fun interactivity and experimentation, not to mention puzzles. I really like elements like this that make the world feel more interactive and fun to explore, THIS is the sort of stuff I want to see more in open world games rather than the same old static worlds but with better graphics.
While I'm not thrilled to see the weapon breaking return, at least this time around the focus seems on creating weapons on the spot with things you find around the world. IMO that will make weapon durability less annoying than having to go out of your way to find cool weapon only to have them break after 2 fights.

On the other hand it still just looks like BOTW with some new tools and abilities. I'm seeing none of the changes and improvements I wanted from a sequel like proper dungeons, more rewarding exploration, cool boss fights, better side quests, a better loot system, more varied shrines, etc

So durability is great because "it forces you to adapt" but the game also throws an ocean of weapons at you so you don't really have to adapt.
Also I never got why people talk as if the weapons in BOTW were like Nioh or Monster Hunter with completely different skill trees and vastly different move sets depending on the weapon type. The combat in BOTW largely stays the same regardless of which weapon you are using, it's just that some deal more damage.
Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
The game forces you to learn how to use every type of weapon because that "ocean" is random and you won't know what type of weapon you're gonna come across next. So you become familiar with all of them and then won't feel out of place when you find a spear instead of a sword or an axe because you know how to use them all.

The new features seem cool. Although I do wonder if that Ascent feature isn't gonna take away stuff like needing enough stamina to climb a mountain, since you can just go right through it. Of course not every mountain will have a opening like a cave but still.

And that bit with the water, come on now, as if Link couldn't swim that short bit? And I don't necessarily like how those items (like those fans for the raft) were conveniently on the ground. The fuse feature is really cool.

But I can't be the only one noticing the rough visuals? I know it's Switch, but those shadows, everything was so grainy, aliased, and resolution wise didn't seem sharp at all. I could swear the latest Xenoblade looks more crisp and clean.

Jesus we need new hardware man.

What I hate about BOTW and now TotK is that it’s too restrictive! They give you a huge open world, but limit you with stamina, breakable weapons, new battery for things you build.

They don’t let you enjoy things! They don’t last

We get it, you care greatly about graphics. I hope you have a very expensive PC bruh.

I do. I love it.

I care about everything about something I might buy. I don't especially feel the need to find excuses for a large corporation charging $70 for a game when that game has aspects that are evidently sub-par, and not by a small margin. Why do you?

Finally got to watch it. Definitely intriguing. I'm sold.

Graphics and art assets are massively reused. But the potential for new gameplay elements more than makes up for it. Being able to make a mushroom shield or homing arrow sounds great. I think its just going to feel like non stop discovery the whole game. I'm in.

Maybe I care for other aspects of gaming. Problem? Nothing wrong in caring about graphics, but don't push your values on others and I'll try to do the same.

Still probably going to get this but I really hate crafting in games and avoid it as much as possible. Not exactly encouraging that fusing weapons/other items is going to be a big part of this game.

Do you require my approval to enjoy the game?

Graphics and gameplay are not in conflict. One can have both especially when budgets aren't lacking.

What we're seeing here is a developer obviously resting on their laurels. It's fine if you think that's ok. I don't.

Totally unimpressed.

Graphically, it's the same game, and this is a huge disappointment for me since I believe Switch can do better and Switch did and do better than this. It's not about the same style, it's litterally the same assets. Lazy devs.

The new abilities... well, maybe there is more behind it, but for now it's more like a hack than new abilities created around the game. BotW 1.2.

The problem with the new abilities is the game won't force you to use it like BotW, where you already had liberty to fight using physics, but for most of the time you simply don't care and use normal techniques instead and it's the same. I want to see if TotK will force you to invent new way and new objects to move on into the game.

I would not pay 70$ for this.

I still think this is the Zelda b-team. We're not waiting 6 years for the next one on switch 2.

You defend Scam Citizen. You have no room to complain about TotK.

Unless one is gaming on PC, you can't really have both apparently, as we still have to substitute fps for resolution and so on, even with the biggest games on PS5/XSX.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has great gameplay, and it doesn't look like crap from 2017.

Star Citizen has more gameplay freedom and depth than any Zelda game will ever have even in alpha, and doesn't look like a rotten potato developed by an indie team of 10 people.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
It looks serviceable, but I'm not blown away by what they've shown. They're obviously riding on the coat tails of BotW's runaway success. It's not like the Zelda series is a stranger to reusing assets. Lots of people claimed that Majora's Mask was just a reskin of Ocarina of Time. From the outset it kinda looked that way, but in the end it became its own thing, just like I'm sure this will.

Holy shit, this looks absolutely bonkers. It's like they took the core concepts of BOTW, and injected 3 times the reccomended ammount of adrenaline on it.

For anyone saying this game looks ugly, please go see an eye doctor.
The first game wasn't exactly pretty either. This one might be a tad bit better looking.

Stop. Of course it could work, it would just take more effort to make it work. There was nothing stopping them from gating tools behind shrines that required tools to obtain them, or designing a world that had SOME progression in terms of utility. Instead they went with "That's too much juice for the squeeze, so lets just front load what you get in the beginning and we'll pretend it was our intent all along."

And hey, maybe it was, but the idea that the "immersive" gameplay of BOTW couldn't have worked hewing closer to the series roots is just ridiculous.

Not sure why people are disappointed or down on the game after the trailer. It was purely a showcase for the new abilities.

Reused world, no change to any of the gameplay systems fans decided didn't work, ZERO iteration of the games tech or visual identity. . .all of that you can gleam from this presentation (not sure where you are getting that this is a "trailer").

I don't think this game's or BOTW's bigger issue was the hardware. Like i said in a previous post, these latest Zelda games look washed out. There's a lack of color and contrast, despite the game being cartoony.

I mean Μetroid Prime Remastered looked great on the hardware. Mario Kart 8 still looks amazing. And did anyone ever complained about the Link's Awaking Remake graphics? All these games look great, despite the weak hardware.

It's just the dull colors. I don't know why they made it so washed out.

Disappointed we didn’t get any info on temples/dungeons but the new abilities look fantastic!

My god you are such a clown XD

I’m already peak hype for this, this game gonna be so fun!

As usual GAF complains about graphics because of course they do, because that’s all they ever do.

Nah, most of GAF doesn't give a shit about graphics. Its just the handful of PC clowns and console warriors. Some have legitimate issues with the game which is perfectly fine.

I’m sure there’s still a ton to be seen and I’ll enjoy the hell out of this, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t underwhelmed. Even the music in Hyrule sounded exactly the same.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 looks like it was made 6 years after this. No joke.
It's funny, in the DF review of XC3, John noted that Monolith were rumoured to be supporting with engineering on TotK and he speculated that it would lead to improved IQ for the final game. Looks like that was maybe a bit optimistic.
