E3 2023 Has Been Canceled

This is all Sony's fault.

Not even kidding.

They are the reason we are stuck with blog posts and tweets for all announcements now.

Soon as they pulled out it E3 immediately started to lose its relevance.

Covid didnt help either. 4 years after Sony decided they were too cool for E3, its officially DEAD.

It was going to happen regardless. It was a massive waste of money to cater to very small number of people when the vast majority were watching from home anyway.

To see people so happy that its gone is so confusing to me. E3 was one of the rare moments throughout the year that gamers from around the world had a chance to get together to celebrate gaming like Comic Con, or the Porn convention. Like why are people so happy one of the biggest exclusive entertainment events that allow for cosplay, game demo, E3 girls, dev interviews, live game reveals and suprise trailers might be gone forever? Im convinced social media has created a hive mind of contarianism.
Lol I agree. Either that or motherfuckers dont really care about games like that and need to go away.

Keep in mind...there are 15, 17,18,19,20-23 year olds that have no connection with E3.

Its the first time I feel that the younger gamer is actually gonna work toward the older gamers detriment. Which is rare in the history of the industry, because as gaming becomes bigger things like E3 should become bigger. Games typically became MORE complex and ambitious, not dumbed down and streamlined like they are becoming now. I should be seeing a 20 year evolution of half life 2, we should have had so many crysis level leaps in PC gaming by now ideally. We should be on GTA 7 lol

I also think theres a bit of denial going on by those that really dont want to admit their hobby got ate up by capitalism

Expected.
Companies realized they don't need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to be at E3 when they can just upload a video to Youtube

E3 also held the devs and companies sort of accountable, they had to have SOMETHING. Looks like these days they know they are on bullshit and dont want to be held accountable for their lack of output. So e3 is a stress to them now.

But that's one of the reasons the E3 format doesn't work anymore. With games taking longer than ever to develop studios might just not have stuff to show. Having this one specific date in which they are "forced" to show up will just result in disappointed gamers complaining about "nothing new" or "CG trailers". The last couple of E3's sucked because it felt like almost no one had anything to show and they were just there because that's what's expected of them.

The format worked better when AAA games were released on a 2-3 years schedule. When Naughty Dog was like 2009 Uncharted 2, 2011 Uncharted 3, 2013 TLOU.
It gave you a nice yearly hype cycle:
2008 Announce Uncharted 2
2009 Hype Uncharted 2
2010 Announce Uncharted 3
2011 Hype Uncharted 3
2012 Announce TLOU
etc.

Now that games take longer you can either announce stuff early and show up to talk about the same game year after year. Or you don't announce anything for multiple years until your new game is around the corner and then everyone complains about a lack of announcements.

It's a shame for sure. It's hard for me to be too upset cause I haven't watched it for years but man, growing up and especially during the PS3 gen, that shit was straight fire and epic as hell.

Good thing those conferences are archived on YouTube.

End of an era. I remember watching G4's coverage back around 2008-2011. That was the best. Before Sesslar went off the handle.

Sad stuff

Enjoy The Geoff's now, with infinite commercials and wet fart announcements.

And more cringe time than all E3's combined

I remember so many amazing E3 moments: Twilight Princess announcement, Wii announcement, Kinect, Metal Gear and FF on the Xbox, Sony's 2015 E3 (the GOAT) ...

Blade Runner Film GIF

Summer Game Fest and TGA doesnt even come an inch close to that

It was like christmas. I'll never understand those who were cheering for E3's death.
What are you talking about? You never watch them live. You catch the highlights later after they're done.

Industry is bigger than ever, they could afford it. They just literally care about money more than the fun now. Whereas they didnt before.

More Mainstream=more monetized focus.

People need accept when shit is getting worse lol

It was inevitable, it's no longer relevant. Good memories to be had when I was younger though, it was as exciting as a child on christmas day. Cheers to all these memories

I personally think there’s a huge difference getting very carefully curated footage from the producer of the game compared to getting footage from hundreds of people playing that same demo live on the show floor.
Recently we getting more demos especially from SE, and heard we getting one from FFXVI before release, so to me honestly doesn’t make much difference.

Also not all games are playable on show floor in E3. For example if Nintendo was in E3 this year, I highly doubt Tears of Kingdom would be available on show floor.

E3 isn't dead, they have kept the 2024 record up.

They just need another year to get devs and companies on board, and to reboot the format.

Too much money and media interest to kill it on one bad move.

Ehh we still got demos then too, in fact during the ps3/360 era we got more demos lol

It's too bad, announcements there always had more excitement and energy than anywhere else. RIP E3.

It isn't worse for me. I'll watch the showcases from home just as I have for many many years. I think that is the case for most gamers and why there is such a tepid reaction to the news.

Sad day. E3 defines much of the gaming memories of my childhood.

For better or worse though, a giant expo for the whole industry to attend once a year just isn’t needed any more.

Even what we are watching from home is less fun though. And with less content.

Well it was never needed, comic con isn't needed. The trend of the industry is about primarily $$$ now, there used to be some naive goofy love for games and hosting fun shit for awhile, but as the medium became more mainstream it accumulated more mainstream business logic.

Add Nintendo to that list with their Direct streams.

Technically, Nintendo started the domino effect

Nintendo Directs and State of Plays are better 🤷‍♂️

Grew up with e3 myself and watched the major conferences every year but the pacing was always atrocious. Here’s random dev to talk for 10 minutes about how they brought shovelware game to PlayStation. Yawn.

Every year I’d get hyped beyond belief. Will we see new hardware/a new TES/new Zelda/Banjo/Fable - anything cool? No. Here’s Miyamoto with Wii Music playing Wonderwall.

At least now it’s 30 min refined shows with sizzle reels and a couple of heavy hitters. New way respects my time much more.

That cringefest was at least fun to make fun of. But it's just a bunch of companies advertising their shit and creating fake hype for a bunch of trash games. Nothing of value was lost.

Gaming is moving towards game as a service model, there is very little for game devs or publisher to show every year. Going to e3 means these game publishers having to waste money to create trailers or announcements that would be delayed or end up cancelling the projects anyway.

E3 used to be amazing, I'd make sure I had nothing on to watch the conferences live (bastard Sony with the 2am conferences in the UK). Always good to watch, equal level of cringe and amazing announcements.

Was pretty much doomed when Bethesda started doing a show the day before, then Sony pulled out completely. Covid was just the final nail in the coffin.

Boring arse SGF doesn't compare in the slightest. When I think of SGF I think of indie shite and shite in general. So Geoff can take his shameless plug and shove it up his arse. Even his TGA is pretty shit tbh.

He is insufferable.

Yeah I'm fed up with him. His insincere, banal, faux-enthusiasm for anything and everything videogames-related makes me tune out and I find him difficult to sit through. As a self-fashioned Mr. Videogames, we deserve better.

Yeah it was great. The longer we live without it the more I miss it. That said, it was pretty terrible during its last few years, I think 2015 was the last really good one for me. The decline of publisher interest in light of the social media/YouTube influencer revolution obviously played its part, but at its peak level of industry dominance, E3 was fantastic.
