Capcom has added microtransactions to the Resident Evil 4 remake, enabling players to pay extra to upgrade their weapons quicker.

The free Mercenaries mode DLC is added to the game today, but it’s also been accompanied by 11 new pieces of paid DLC called ‘Exclusive Upgrade Tickets’, each letting players speed up the upgrade process.

“To gun enthusiasts, knife collectors, and lovers of weapons of any and all kinds,” the DLC description reads, “here’s your ticket to the gun show! Specifically a ticket to be redeemed at the Merchant’s shop.

“With this, you’ll have access to a weapon’s exclusive upgrade at any time, regardless of the weapon’s level. Not only that, but once unlocked, the upgrade itself is free of charge!

“This item will be added to the Treasures menu and will be available across all of your saved data.”

Each upgrade ticket costs $2.99 / £2.49 and there are also a number of multipacks letting players buy three or five tickets at a discount.

In total, if players were to buy everything, they would get 23 upgrade tickets at a total cost of $55.89 / £46.05.

There was no indication from Capcom that microtransactions were being added to the game.

While I think it was unnecessary, they aren't needed whatsoever, so this doesn't really bother me at all. If a person wants to buy them to save time, they can, that's that. Capcom has been implementing this kind of DLC in a number of games. Pretty sure DMC 5 did something similar. Let's not just start bad mouthing one of the best games this year because of it, lol.

On the one hand it's a shame they're suggesting that playing the game is a nuisance which can be bypassed for a fee, but I feel we're long past this slippery slope already.

Game's still damn good, this won't change that.

Nah

Don't act brand new. The first couple years the 360 was out Microsoft tested those waters heavily and the industry was worse off for it.

Ok chief, everyone has done dirty microtransactions....Hell games like Last of us online and uncharted online were pretty much pay to win. I don't really get what you are getting at?

You want to blame Microsoft for something Bethesda did?

we should call these things RetardTransactions... because what kind of idiot buys these?
It could make sense to buy them:

You need to spend less time playing the game and can use that time for work instead - in order to make money. You can then use this additional money to fund similar time savers in other games which gives you even more time to work and thus make more money.

So if you think this through, the people who buy such MTX will heavily benefit from it.

Who cares? Why do so many have a problem with this? Do you walk around a supermarket shouting about the stuff you don’t like and calling those that do retards? It’s called choice and as long as it’s not affecting you then why would you care? ‘I want less choice!’ shout the morons. I couldn’t be less interested in buying them, some people must be. Good on those people they now have the opportunity to spend money on the things they want. Seriously, sad moaning people. Gonna get a refund, use the money to get a life and find real problems.

That's a good idea actually.
People who buy new clothes are retards because they are spending money on goods that just change their appearance and nothing else.

Or people that buy tools are basically cheating because they will get things done much faster compared to anyone who does the "honest" work without these tools.

This behavior should be called out more often.

It diminishes the sense of accomplishment, knowing someone else just cleared that difficult boss you died on 25 times on the first try paying 3.99$. Of course its not as bad as in an online game, but still not ideal.

Interesting thought experiment. Corporations are enticing you to spent less time gaming so you can spend more time working for them instead. And looks like people are just mugging it up. Who knew. You could make them pay to not play.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Ok. To be fair. People are blowing it a bit out of proportion here.

Because you can straight up buy 1 hit-kill rocket launchers from the merchant in the game as well, if you're having difficulty with a boss, buy one and kill it.

If the answer's gonna be "but that's optional". So are these.

in game items are a limited resource. You may not have the money to buy the boss killing item if you played badly before and has less money or already expended the item on something else.

you can just as well not choose to buy this real life payment thing, it's not being forced as a mandatory purchase by Capcom :messenger_grinning_sweat:

last I checked, most people also have limited real life money too lol.

My real life money is a limited resource as well.
Do you guys not understand the basic concept of GAME BALANCE? Your first statement doesn't make sense, because if I'm allowed to buy a rocket launcher is game i will choose to buy it. The developer's have already accounted it into the game's balance, so I'm not cheating. I need to earn the rocket launcher with my in game exploration money.
Real life money is not a limited resource as it pertains to the game. You introduce your 100 dollars into this game, and see how it allows practically infinite resourcefulness to breeze the game breaking the game's balance. You if you still haven't finished the game, spent another 20 dollars. False analogy.

Meanwhile over on era it appears they are ignoring that the microtransactions even exist - probably due to the fact this is the 2nd negative thing for the game in this latest update - the other being Ada and Wesker not being available in mercenaries I think I saw

Every RE engine game has added unlockables as MTX post-release.

Not saying that it's OK, just saying there's no reason that this should have come as a surprising news.
Usually it was just costumes, not pay-to-win bullshit, which is especially laughable considering that it's for a single player game.

Fuck outta here, Capcom.

Re2, Re3 and Re Village all have had the "unlock everything" DLC items post-release, which unlocks all the infinite ammo super weapons, that you would otherwise have needed to play and beat the game in the highest difficulties in.

Like I said, it's really not surprising. They've followed this trend for practically all the RE engine games.

it's not really pay to win though since you can ignore it completely and still beat the game/I didn't purchase any microtransactions for my first playthrough on hardcore and beat it just fine
it just seems to be for people who are impatient and want to beat the game slightly quicker which really isn't much of an advantage

Capcom Dev: What if we make a Hunk theme DLC, where you start at the end of the game and you have to make your way to the beginning of the game?

Capcom Executive: Did you finish the upgrade tickets I asked you?
