State of the market
Consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories reached $4.1 billion, a 5% drop when compared to a year ago. A 6% decline in April spending on video game content offset 7% growth in hardware.

Year-to-date consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories fell 2% when compared to the same period in 2022, to $17.7 billion.

Hardware
Video game hardware spending grew 7% when compared to YA, to $367M. This is the highest video game hardware spend for an April month since the $420M reached in April 2020. Double-digit percentage growth in both PS5 and Switch dollar sales offset declines on other platforms.

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in dollar sales during April, while Switch led the market in units sold. PlayStation 5 leads the 2023 hardware market year-to-date across both units and dollars.

“Pokémon Go fell out of the top ten for the first time since April of last year,” said Dennis Yeh of Sensor Tower. “Spend trends were relatively stable in April with no major shifts in subgenre spend from March.”

Accessories
Accessories spending during April was flat when compared to a year ago, at $158 million. The PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller Black was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for both April and 2023 year-to-date.

Odd that Switch beat out Playstation just a month after it posted a record 700k or so in sales.

Did the PS5 sales come back down to earth or did the switch post a record month too?

Happy to see the retro content doing well this month (MegaMan, FF and Advance Wars).

Holy crud Switch is like a gazillion years old and TOTK came out in May

Pre Zelda hypes?
PS5 came back to Earth and Switch got a boost from the Mario movie and Zelda OLED.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Great month for Switch (pushed by Zelda OLED model, Mario movie hype) and PS5, double digit growth for both.
Xbox continues to have disappointing results.

It also seems Dual Sense Edge is a success for Sony:
The PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller Black was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for both April and 2023 year-to-date.

It's Zelda month; I imagine the game gave Switch hardware sales a big boost.

Next month PS5 will be #1 in hardware units unless there are supply constraints. Lots of big games for it in June including FF XVI as an exclusive.

Meh... shortages and Starfield is coming.

Series X is not as supply-constrained as people make it out to be in America, and Series S is always readily available.

Starfield will give Series a nice boost in units but considering Spiderman 2 comes out the same month, the best MS can hope for is 2nd in units and revenue.

Zelda came out in May. This is the April thread.

People knowing a new Zelda comes out in May might've convinced a lot to pick up a system the month ahead of time.

Also don't forget the sales promo Nintendo's been doing with some of the Mario games, and the boost the Super Mario movie gave both the games and (apparently) system due to its success.

EDIT: Also like several posters are saying, Zelda Switch OLED model released in April. I forgot all about that but yeah, that would obviously be a big seller in itself.

How the hell do you constantly get pissed on in your own territory? Either ineptness or a lack of care. Probably a mixture of both.

And I don’t want to hear the “yeah but Starfield” shite either.
10 years of inept leadership, poor releases, lack of any meaningful GOTY caliber games.

He's seen the numbers. He probably did some polls and surveys and knows starfield isnt going to turn anything around. Hence the comments. That ship has sailed. It will take MS 2-3 Starfield quality games a year for the next 5 years to get the trust of the people back and that might be enough to turn the tide come next gen. He knows this gen is lost.

Why does he get plaudits then? Why is there a sort of clique/hive mind strategy with protecting the man.

It’s not making Xbox a better product. It irks me sometimes , I don’t get it.

He wont be getting them anymore. Everyone including the astroturfers on his payroll is done with him.

Watch the latest Ryan McCaffrey IGN podcast. They are done with Phil.

Nice to hear that I wasn't that ONE GUY who bought the Dualsense Edge in the USA (and I love it very much despite some shipping adventures). It is indeed a worth accessory but I'm amazed how many people thought that this will be a nice investment too.

No I’m not watching him after the whole “he’s a hardcore gamer and the two leaders at PlayStation and Nintendo are not” plea the past few weeks

It was fucking embarassing and drove home the cult/hivemind shit I was talking about earlier.
