A much more rigorous example would be this:

Same reviewer of course.

Well I thought’d be higher - not that it’s bad. I just figured since Zelda and Ragnarok both got mid 90’s scores this would get close - since I personally enjoyed the demo as much or more than both of those games (and I liked those games a lot).

The review for Redfall was done by Jordan Oloman. Who has only done two reviews for VGC since 2020. He may not even be an employee of VGC. He may be freelance. Jordan Middler and Andy Robinson seem to do the bulk of VGC's reviews of high profile games. Though, one must ask what the review standards are, even if freelance, to have their Redfall review be so much higher than most others. When the game was, objectively, poorly done. I'd be embarrassed that my site's Redfall review, knowing how bad that game is, is being sat next to games like FF16.

I'm going to wait and see. Was going to buy a PS5 for this but when reviews/impressions state that its "light on rpg elements/mechanics", I was kinda turned off. Are there any good non-spoiler reviews detailing what RPG mechanics are in the game?

Theres a skill tree and crafting. Thats about it. You’re not managing party members or making many story decisions.

That is selling it short. There is also customization of hte main character through the numerous Eikons you unlock, weild, and the move pool you create and utilize. Much like FF3 and FF5 (as well as the Bravely Series with how you unlock job abiities for use in other jobs). Story decisions are rarely in any JRPG. Ever. And have never been indicative of if a game is/isn't an rpg.

Yakuza always was a brawler and never scored as high as the turn based jrpg but by your logic it wasnt yakuza anymore? Guess what your logic is objectively wrong.
Haha there are people who neglected was a Yakuza because the name was “like a dragon” so was a spin-off, when the title is literally the translation of the Japanese name of the series.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Lokaum D+ Lokaum D+ so.. about that 95 ”no problem”.

Sorry bro.

On a good side, I’ve played the game for over 12 hours now and it’s a 10 if that matters for you :3

Yeah that's bullshit too.

Imagine claiming it's the best ever final fantasy....that's wild....it should be at a 95 metacritic if that's the case...

Better than FFV, VI and IX....wowza

He’s saying that’s his opinion. We ourselves don’t crown the best game in a series by the metacritic score. That’s just not how it works is it?

I can tell you the demo has better writing than any FF since FF7, it included, which are the ones I’ve played. And it’s not even close, so if you are somebody who likes the gameplay shift and think story is one of the most important if not the most important aspect of a mainline FF? I wouldn’t doubt it.

Look a 90+ would've been cool to look at, but take a look at these games that all scored in the 85-89 range:

  • Nier Automata
  • Spiderman PS4
  • Dark Souls
  • Sekiro
  • Doom/Doom Eternal
  • Dragon Quest IX
  • FFVII Remake
  • Devil May Cry 5

That's to name a few in the past several years.

Point being the vast majority of games, even the great ones, don't manage to crack 90+. Simply put, it takes a looooot of 9s and 10s to keep it above 90. But it only takes a small handful of 6 and 7s to drag it under. Making a game, especially one such as this that takes a lot of risks, had a lot working against it to achieve that 90+. The JRPG genre very rarely sees over a 90+ anyway, and the diversity bullshit guaranteed a few clowns having a chip on their shoulder.

FFXVI could end up 87 or 86 in the end, and still be considered one of the all time greats by fans. Even new comers to the series. Plus the general consensus, even amongst detractors, is that it's one of the best action games made.

So don't let the few detractors get you down. The game is almost out, so enjoy yourselves.

I have held conversations with people like this who I wanted to stab repeatedly after just a couple of minutes listening to them talking about how unfair the world is - as they drink £20 glasses of craft beer, wearing £200 sun glasses, and living in flats that their parents still pay for.

It's a way of balancing out their guilt over how easy they had it. They think if they fight on behalf of others who cant, it means they are justified in continuing to live their life of extreme comfort - they don't have their own struggles to talk about so they adopt other people's.
They're all fucking idiots, of course.

and i stand for what i've said, since u played the game for 12 hours u know that i was right cause i too played the game for 20 hours ( thanks to my local store ) and is a 10/10 for me, the game should had scored higher no doubt.

FF16 just didnt achieve a higher score because didnt pander to the "modern sensibility", "forced diversity" that plagues or game industry right now and at the end of the day Tabata was right about the "FF disease" that affect most of the fanbase.

"Around that time, I realized that among fans as well, there are people who've caught Final Fantasy disease," he said about some of the negative feedback Final Fantasy 15 had received.
"It refers to people within the company who can't imagine anything other than their own view of Final Fantasy," Tabata elaborated.
"Since the root is a strong self-affirmation, one’s own view of Final Fantasy takes more priority than the team’s success. If that view of Final Fantasy isn't fulfilled, then they’re convinced that it’s bad for Final Fantasy.
"They think, ‘Since Final Fantasy is a special team, then we are also special because we are making it. When the new Final Fantasy comes out, everybody is going to be so into it.’ But that’s not the reality of the situation, is it?"
Tabata added that because of this, he had to tell the development team at one point, "We're not special. Wake up."
"I realized that when Final Fantasy XV news was made public--this wasn't only inside the company. Everyone has FF disease."

OT when? Tomorrows work day is going to be loooooooong

I'm fortunate enough to have weird ass work hours where I go to work at 4am and get off at noon or 1pm, and I'm off Fridays, so I'll have plenty of time to play tomorrow after work and my day off.

I thought for sure this would hit a 93.
I always thought it would be a stretch for a 90s MC score. The game absolutely looks like a high 80s.

My opinion as to why has to do with the combat system/game design - which is getting mostly praise, but is not THE main reason for its higher scores. No, I am not a turn based hanger-on. As superior as this combat system is to DMC, there's still DMC-DNA in there.

When it’s a long running series, it is IMPOSSIBLE for people to not have certain expectations. We are human. It is impossible; I don’t care what anyone says. And even Yoshi-P said it himself, that the FF series kind of lost its foundation after Sakaguchi left.

To me, the only FF team that still speaks to me is CBU1, in charge of VII/VIII/X/XIII/VIIR. Their games have the aesthetic and gameplay that I’m looking for with FF and their games still feel like the older era FF’s. Personally. And I respect this team more for coming up with a unique battle system that, despite some flaws, is largely very praised, while respecting traditional elements of prior FF’s. That is the right way to go, IMO.

I’m happy for people who are excited for FFXVI but I can’t shake how utterly Western it feels and I don’t like that at all. The combat being more DMC-like is fine, but it’s the overall product that feels incredibly Western, from the muted color palette, to the more generic-looking fantasy world, to the lack of gorgeous CG cutscenes the series is known for, etc. It’s disappointing to me. Like at this point absolutely nothing is safe when it comes to mainline FF’s. That’s not a good thing. Every entry can be fresh, but just having chocobos, spell names, and some monsters being the same is not nearly enough for a long running franchise. And unlike, say, BOTW/TOTK, XVI doesn’t do anything revolutionary to make up for omitting some beloved series traits; it’s rather derivative, much like the MMO that this team has worked on. But it’s clear that CBU1 is basically Final Fantasy’s “Western-oriented” team that’s inspired by Western media + Matsuno (who is also heavily inspired by Western media).

Also, while Tabata had a point about “FF disease,” he has no room to talk. He made the story and story content/presentation, which is always the the top priority in FF games, the last priority, all for a boring and subpar open world.

And that's SUPER STUPID!
When people say “I’m not buying it because it doesn’t have a 90+ MC,” it is the equivalent of a person telling you “I’m just not looking for a relationship.”

They’re not looking for a relationship… with you. They’re not that interested. From footage that they’ve seen, it hasn’t piqued their interest enough to go and get it Day 1. Maybe a high MC average would have swayed them to think “you know what, maybe it’s amazing enough for me to enjoy it even though it doesn’t really speak to me that much.” But the MC average is not high enough to have swayed them.

This narrative of “ugh people are SHEEP for basing their purchases on MC scores!” is hilariously disingenuous.
