Imagine working in a place whether it's MS or not, knowing its a possiiblity you will lose your job but the announcement just doesn't happen and you're left in a limbo right around summer vacations (it's always bad but families need their quality time as well)

I imagine many of them will be polishing their resumes/sending it around. Which can't be good for MS, even if said employees don't get fired (this round).
 
Been thinking about this and I wonder if the main reason is to replace full time employees with contract workers.

We do know that ms studios generally tely on 18 month contract workers, especially since they can avoid giving benefits to such workers.

Wonder if the aim of this is to replace the full time workers in Bethesda and Activision with contract workers ( if true, could also be the first layoff of many) or even offshore a lot for the development task

Surely the great majority are simply people who only work at their jobs for a paycheck...
I don't think the people here celebrating layoffs and excited for their announcements to come are doing so for that specific reason. It has more to do with what we all know 🙇.

Can you imagine the hit to morale finding out you could lose your job through a journalist?

Most companies you find out when you get that dreaded meeting invite "company update" out of nowhere usually happening within a hour or two, where you can't see who else is cc'd in.

I'd raise my flag and set off firecrackers if that were the only one fired, too 🤣🤣

That said. In these cases, the victims are mostly ordinary workers who earn their paychecks. DEI people, purple hair, She/her, etc., are usually (sadly) the "bosses" today and the ones who will be free from the staff cuts.

I work for a major company (100k+ people) and usually layoffs hit the local paper or reddit before it hits the internal water cooler chat

I know a lot of people that have found out contracts would not get renewed or that they got traded via a Tweet from people that report on that stuff before they were brought into an office and told

Guess I just grew up in a time that we had thicker skin, I dunno

Everyone's different man. Some of us are built different and can process/handle bad news regardless of how it's delivered whereas other people can react badly if it's not delivered in the appropriate manner.

If someone falls in to the latter it doesn't mean they are a bad person or that they aren't capable of adding value in a meaningful way to a business. It's a sensitive subject for a lot of people, and many find it embrassing to get fired or lose their job. So it's important that people find out through the correct channels, not from gossip (whether internal within the organisation or external in the media).

There's also a wider point here that companies who have reputations for letting go of people in less than tactful ways tend to struggle when it comes to attracting talent. Nobody decent wants to go and work for an organisation that proudly disrespects their employees in that way.

Why the hell do any of you give a shit? They will take their resume and find a new job, or learn a new skill to get a job in a different field.

Plenty of my family are miners in different parts of the country and oil rig workers. They got laughed at when their jobs were taken and told to go back to college.

Not one damn employee at Microsoft or any other company in the world gives a crap about you, your life, or your family being fed.

I just hope this leads into a gaming crash for the whole darn thing for a nice reset. I'm tired of storefronts and games making a grind so horrible to push you towards the stores.

I didn't call anyone a bad person I just don't understand why a few are super concerned over their feelings of people they will never know who might get laid off and how they find out about it

I mean actually I do understand it and should have left it alone and let those keep voicing their concerns about a company they clearly love to hate

And I am not remotely saying its one sided, we see it when layoffs hit other platforms and their studios as well

Nah, keep speaking. It seems at this juncture, we need to bring back the late 70s and 80s way of living. Grow up, there are millions of jobs lost and gained a day and their isn't enough empathy to cover that shit.

I think we need some of that old 80's New York attitude back, "Go fuck yourself and leave me alone".

Where did all these feelings come from, and when?

Not saying you're calling anyone a bad person. Simply stating why it's bad form for a business to let this kind of thing run amok before they've managed to handle it internally.

I refuse to believe a business as big as theirs would want something like this to leak and be in the press before they've managed to handle it internally and go through their usual process/policy of letting people go.

There's a human side to all of this which is why those processes exist.

I don't know this but bet that size of theirs also makes it much harder to keep news like this under wraps when meetings are being held on who gets cut, too many people involved in this process

If individual performance related then yes. If business performace related (or financial) then no. A lot of people just go to work and do their jobs with blinkers on, especially in roles that don't require them to be commercially aware.

No. I've been thru layoffs in big companies. People see it coming and gossip spreads. There's lots of signs. Like projects being canceled. Just getting acquired by a bigger company almost guarantees layoffs soon enough.

Companies are required to publicly disclose layoffs before they happen in some states. It's called WARN Act.

But the hammer drops suddenly and quickly when the day arrives. Once I was on vacation and came back and half my team was gone.

It sucks no matter what but having to sit there for a week or two and stress about knowing if you are going to have a job or not based on a leak that may or may not be credible is pretty shitty.
