Lol I love how it didn't even take him much to find the tweets, just enter "from:vicious696 future".

NIB is a console warrior through and through tho lol.

Shame though that he got banned here.

The Acti buyout was meant to corner Sony and push it out of the market, who would have thought it ended up doing the exact opposite and steadfast MS transition to Third Party Publisher so quick?

Absolutely no one, I'm still in disbelief tbh
Considering Phil Spencer's track record of overpromising and underdelivering during the Xbox One era, it wasn't that surprising at least for me.

I love what's happening with Xbox exactly because of that. It's Schadenfreude, I know, but they literally said "we are in a position to outspend Sony from the market."

Imagine!

A freakin' $3 trillion corporation using its unfair cash advantage to destroy a 25x smaller company that has millions and millions of userbase and has a much longer and richer history of gaming - a hobby we all love. And they wanted to outspend that gaming company so they could increase their profits a little bit.

Fuck Microsoft. They deserve what's happening to them.

Karma is a real bitch.

The key here is we didn't realize how weak the Xbox Division leadership was. Normally when you buy a company you take what is valuable and dump what you don't need. The company you buy is effectively butchered. But normally you only do this to companies WEAKER than you. Makes sense, the strong eats the weak.

But the surprise is that Activision was such a large and profitable company, that it makes no sense to butcher it to strengthen Xbox. That Activision is outright superior to Xbox Division as a whole.

Now, we couldn't tell beforehand because we didn't know Xbox was THAT weak. That it was such a basket case and losing money that Microsoft decided Activision should be kept whole instead of feeding it to Xbox.

You remember how a few hardcore Xbox people here would bring up the MS war chest and if MS actually opened it that meant total doom for Playstation?

Ironic that actually opening said war chest sped up the demise of Xbox

100%. What a weird flex that was.

Glad that we don't have to hear that anymore, at least, and companies are fighting it out based on creativity and quality - instead of "my daddy has more money than yours."

They've been in that position since 2001

They've spent billions and have little to show for it. Culturally the company just isn't a good fit for gaming.

Honestly I'd be fine with seeing Xbox win and having to listen to the fanboys gloat, if they won by cranking out lots of kickass games from all these prestigious studios they own.

Instead we just saw most of the western gaming industry wither up and die (and not just Microsoft's studios, also Bungie, BioWare, Ubisoft, etc etc)

We've watched the American gaming industry repeatedly kick itself in the face the past decade now. They deserve it.

Thankfully Japan and a few European AAA studios are on brilliant form right now.

If they make banger games, good for them. We all love and want good games - whoever the publisher is.

I hope they team up with Moon Studios again and give us Ori 3, hit 90+ MC, and get nominated / win GOTY.

Unfortunately, they are busy with their other stupid strategies to actually focus on games.

I feel like East Asian devs - Chinese and Korean studios, specifically - are coming to eat everyone's lunch!

Don't get me wrong, they're producing some quality stuff, but it's largely same SoulsBorne stuff.

I think people are going to get fatigued with the genre.

It's like Steam on Xbox: how do you monetize that ? Am I missing something ?

No, you're missing nothing. It's a DUMB plan and many of us know it.

The Acti buyout was meant to corner Sony and push it out of the market, who would have thought it ended up doing the exact opposite and steadfast MS transition to Third Party Publisher so quick?

Many of us on GAF saw this coming. This is a little faster than thought, but the end was clear. None of the ideas and numbers make sense! And many of us (the same people) are trying to tell Xbox fans right now that putting Steam on your next console will doom the Xbox brand for good. THEY SHOULD NOT PUT STEAM ON ANY XBOX HARDWARE!!!!

Steam is by far a better overall product and service, than the Xbox storefront. MS wouldn't be able to compete with Steam. That 30% cut will flow to Valve, through the Xbox hardware. Meaning Microsoft will LITERALLY lose billions of dollars per year by doing this. It's not a winning idea at all for the brand.

It makes sense when the hardware is being made by 3rd party manufacturers and the hardware itself is being sold for profit with ms taking a cut for the branding and supplying the chip design( in collaboration with and, obviously) and software.

It won't be a casual, mass market product nor will it be cheap. It will be an expensive device catered towards hardcore fans

No one wants the brand to survive, we just want value from poor Xbox decision making.

$1 for 3 years of ultimate and then cancel. Play the latest Xbox releases on discounted subscription cards, $15 bucks to play $80. Buy the games 3 years later on PS5 for nothing. Play Fortnite via streaming TV service and never spend dime. At this point, some of us are costing Xbox money.

Steam on Xbox is the final step in the value chain. By giving me cheap PC prices and access to an infinite sales on the largest library, somehow Xbox profits..somehow!

Again.....some of us did know Xbox was THAT weak. We tried to tell yall for years. O onQ123 has been making threads and quoting himself for years saying just that!

An example of one of his threads is..............

So, again many of us did think Xbox was THAT weak. 100%

Honestly I think they lose either way. We've already seen that Gamepass isn't enough to sustain a console, and that, despite buying up half the damn gaming industry, MS's first party studios are not capable of creating big "system seller" games in a timely manner. What else is left?

With Steam support at least they have a chance of selling some hardware, and maybe some of those hardware buyers will eventually get Gamepass. Seems like a desperate hail Mary that will probably fail. But I don't know if the alternative would be any better.

It wasn't surprising to me. For many years, Xbox had been a rounding error to Microsoft, I was (one of the few apparently) who saw that a purchase this expensive was not something that Spencer and Greenberg could use as a toy and shareholders would have no choice but to take notice. It is something that would have to pay dividends.

But the bolded is exactly why it's a terrible idea LOL! If the Xbox Series consoles end up selling 35-40 million units and we know the Xbox One consoles sold 58 million consoles and the X360 sold 84 million consoles........don't we all see the pattern here? You're openly admitting that it's likely that this next generation of Xbox consoles will probably only sell 20 million units MAX! That's horrible for the brand and will ultimately hurt GamePass subscription growth.

What I think will happen...if this actually ends up coming to pass...is that the other stores will be "available" but hard to find and that MS will push their storefront aggresively and even outright manipulate buyers into thinking their buying the game on Steam and/or their launcher of choice.

Its going to flop but honestly I kind of applaud them for at least trying something different because launching hardware going straight up against Playstation is stupid at this point

The huge question about these OEM PC/console machines that will play your Xbox console library is will games like GTA 6 run on it at launch?

All speculations so far

Xbox is lucky MS have the money to rebrand themselves with ease and to make it seem like this is a great plan that was always their intention but everyone following their moves know they switched completely.

You only need to check their court documents from those days back when the acquisition happened. They had to make a 10 year deal with Sony for Call of Duty and everything...if they always intended to have that franchise and all others on Playstation day one why have the trouble to do all that just for one franchise?

It's pretty clear Phil Spencer doesn't have the same freedom to do what he wants and MS probably grew impatient with Gamepass lacking results, game sales declining, all their studios not releasing games, and announcing games 5 years before release.

Can you imagine how Xbox would be doing without this acquisition? No hardware sales, game sales, etc...

We knew Xbox was the spiritual successor of the Dreamcast back then but Xbox ending as a 3rd party publisher as well 25 years later wasn't on my bingo card.

dark patterns... or just the overall experience will be subpar.

It's almost as if just spending money like drunken sailors was not the solution. You actually need to spend it efficiently and smartly.

MS has put themselves into this corner that all options seem bad, because they never seem to want to do the obvious thing. Which is provide great video game content at a high level with NO BS! Nintendo and Sony have both shown for decades, that's all it takes.

It wasn't surprising to me. For many years, Xbox had been a rounding error to Microsoft, I was (one of the few apparently) who saw that a purchase this expensive was not something that Spencer and Greenberg could use as a toy and shareholders would have no choice but to take notice. I remember people like me, you, and others saying it'll be hard to make the purchase of ABK profitable. And "those" Xbox fans saying they didn't have to make the money back because ABK is not an "asset". Like how stupid did these guys have to be to drink the Kool-AID? No company on Earth would spent $75 Billion on something and NOT expect it to generate profits at some point.

I honestly thought the Activision deal would keep them afloat for at least another generation, but this demise has been so quick as if it made XBOX demise faster. Not because of accountability on XBOX side, but their numbers continue to go down.

A sinking ship is just that, a sinking ship. Once you reach the threshold of no turning back, it cant be helped. They have to go obscure for a while, pump out some bangers for a few years, before this brand can come outside this at this point. I think Hardware has no chance though.

That's kind of always been MS's MO. They believe they can buy their way into any industry because of their financial might, which in many cases hasn't worked out. Just look at their purchases like Nokia, Groove, Mixer, Skype, etc.

Honestly that is what I think as well. MS has given up on expanding. The best case scenario for them is to retain all their current customers( the 30 to 40 million series consoles owners). The more realistic expectation that they probably have is 15 to 25 million units sold with the vast majority of buyers being hardcore users.

MS is no longer competing with anyone. Their goal now is to improve margins and profitability. Personally I wouldn't if they take steps to increase gamepass profitability ( like increasing prices, stopping day one, etc) and are willing to lose subscribers for it.

Edit: sorry messed up the quote and formatting

Yes

At this stage it was probably a great move to keep all brands like Bethesda, Activision separate from Xbox

At first i thought it was weird there was no Xbox logo on every release, especially on playstation

Now it makes more sense - the owned brands will probably outlive "Xbox" as a brand

Imo they have some great devs so i think they can be the best third party dev, almost already are

If MS stays out of those dev's way, they can be the best 3rd party dev on Earth.

Sometimes devs need more than financial leeway. But real guidance.
They gave blank checks to 343 and Phil liked what he saw with the first Halo Infinite trailer and we got the Craig meme and game got delayed because of the backlash

As long as people like Spencer and Bond are evaluating games in development I think MS gaming is in a lot of trouble.

Same people who needed internal review teams to tell them Redfall would be rated at 80+ by reviewers. How Phil Spencer played that game and nodded in agreement will always baffle me.

Its likely way too late but changes need to be made from leadership down to how they handle games and gamepass

Hope E Ethos is reading this ;)

I also spoke of this but I don't think it's their demise this is exactly where Microsoft wants to be , the money is in software not hardware

Post in thread 'Circana (formerly NPD) February 2023: PS5 #1 in Units and Dollars, Switch #2, and Xbox #3 in Units' https://www.neogaf.com/threads/circ...-2-and-xbox-3-in-units.1654760/post-267845083

PlayStation is no longer a threat to PC so Microsoft don't have to fight for the "living room" anymore because Amazon & Google actually did what Microsoft feared that PlayStation would do " take control of people homes "

Strangely Amazon is also succeeding at cloud gaming now but Google failed .

Microsoft know that they can't complete with Amazon if there user base is limited to Xbox hardware so they made it clear there battle will be with Amazon & Google .

Ok, some of could have seen it, but not this fast and not without a fight, also remember when the courts started siding with MS on the buyout, what everyone, fanboys or not were thinking is, if MS can get Acti, why stop there? I still remember rumors about them getting WB gaming division, hell, a few months ago some were daydreaming about getting Ubislop (even tho it'd be a waste of money :messenger_tongue: )

Absolutely no one, predicted a pivot this fast after the Activision deal closed.
