Mewgenics review thread (it’s a banger)

Read the title again after watching the trailer.

Have you tried using the track pad?
Not really, will have to try.
I suspect something is simply broken for now, like dpad controls can randomly jump around the entire screen.
Mouse cursor is also present on screen despite me clearly using the pad and this messes up the popups.
Will probably be fixed in a patch.

I'm playing it using the track pad and it plays great. Just put the confirm button on the right trigger.

The launch trailer had me laughing out loud. My coworker was raving about this a few weeks ago, we all thought he was crazy.

I never knew about this game a week back and here I am, 5 hours in and hundreds more to go.

Amazing charm and depth. Very funny names. This is true indie, this is soul, this is a masterpiece. Also did I tell you about the legendary OST this game has?

theres over 900 items, 70 abilities per class... this shit is going to have layers of meta for years

If Isaac is anything to go by, I imagine it will be tweaked, not to mention expansion packed several times over.

Game is fun, but the whole desaturated look is just pure eye fatigue for me. This mofo clearly got too depressed after Super Meat Boy. Now there was a game with some color.

Saw this got a full screen top spot ad on Steam just now

Uh oh, this is a time machine game: boot it up and hours pass like minutes. It's addictive. You might say it's like catnip!

the difficulty is going to be marmite on this. As I get futher into it I realise it's going to require a lot of unfavourable RNG, extremely well thought out builds, and time. My god it's going to take a lot of time to finish a run. Lord only knows how long it will take to 100% this

The dififculty curve goes almost 90 degree angle once you really get into the swing of things

Finished the Alley on my first attempt. I'm terrible at strategy games, but still like to get broken by them. Love the music and I can't wait to dive into the base building some more.

Also I played it on Deck and didn't have any issues with the controls.

I'm in the same boat and beat the Alley first go, while not exactly being a good at strategy games. I had more trouble with the mini boss Fenrir more than the end boss of that area. Having fun though and on my second run I beat the boss again, but 3 of my cats were downed throughout so didn't even bother risking the sewers in case I lost all the loot and cats etc (not sure how it works yet tbh)

Is it always the bomberman boss? I also noticed a "hard" fork on the map, but couldn't select it. I'm guessing that unlocks once you've beat the normal path once.

I'm not sure tbh, I don't have any hard paths unlocked yet myself. I've just beat the second area and the hard mode is still locked, which is fine for me, because while I have yet to fail a run, I have lost team members so I probably wouldn't fair to well there atm.

Edit - After unlocking the third area, The Caves, I started a new run there now and the hard path was open on the first map. The end boss was different too.

Watching your busted up, disfigured kitty soldiers confidently walk home "safe" after barely beating a boss...makes an owner proud.

The breeding and kitty management at the home base is chaos. Need to figure out or find an optimal method. So far, I grab any strays, and let the days end a couple times for a chance for my warriors to breed, then start sending extras down the pipe. But maybe it's better to give away strays immediately if their stats/actions/passives aren't immediately impressive so they don't have a chance to breed?

impressions after ~15 hours of play ish...

Pros
- Game is quite challenging so far
- Soundtrack slaps
- Combat slaps
- Artstyle subjective, not to my taste but still polished. The animations are very detailed...
- Deep machnics, tons of possibilities, abilities, combos and item synergy = high skill ceiling and build variety
- Genuinely funny game, not cringey humour, lots of references to stuff hidden in there
- Feels like a perfect blend of Roguelike / Xcom tactical team combat
- Simpsons esque intro slaps

Cons
- I can see it being a bit grindy if you are not used to this sort of game
- Soundtrack while good is getting repetetive already..
- Confusing UI and menus.. seriously, one of the worst I've seen
- Difficulty curve is near vertical once things get going

How's the controls without a mouse? Is it playable? I would like to have it but I would play with a controller / Steam Deck. Thanks!

We are slowly going back to the early 80's when bedroom coders would program the games but also do the visuals themselves, regardless if they could or not.

On the PC you have 2 control options, KB/M and controller. I looked at the Keyboard mappings and there are a couple of controls that have missing mappings, like End Turn for example, is blank but assignable.

I was going to play on the Steam deck as well and thought cool I can set the keyboard bindings on the back buttons for some of the controls to make it easier on the SD.

Loaded the game on the SD and it only shows the controller bindings, the keyboard settings are not there, the option is not even there. I changed the controller layout to use kb/m profile but the keyboard bindings still didn't appear which is disappointing. Hopefully I'm missing something or they can be added at some point.

the game is so good that I couldn't care less about the graphics tbh

I'm at a point mentally where great graphics in general are of no interest to me or have any impact on my enjoyment anymore..

Apparently, once you get additional room(s) in the house, you can isolate pairs increasing the odds they mate.

This game really does make you feel like a mad scientist lol
