Greg Miller: Phil Spencer retirement was not planned

With the way things have been going it seems like Spencer should have had an exit strategy
I think getting canned was his exit strategy at this point. I'm guessing Nadella called him up Friday morning and told him "Congrats on your retirement!", then security showed up shortly after.

They pushed him out and let the PR statement look otherwise. Pretty standard stuff for a high level exec at an american corp. Firing him outright would reflect poorly on the culture of the company as a whole so this way everybody saves some face, the rumor mill has some fun with it and it all dies down within a week. Easy.

Only thing left to bet on is when Phil pops up at some Tencent subsidiary

What are your thoughts on Microsoft potentially divesting Activision, Bethesda and other content heavy subsidaries and selling them to private equity? Some have argued that the cash could be used to further AI investments.
I can't really see MS doing that on a publisher-scale, but I could see them doing it on individual teams and their respective IP. AI still needs marketable use cases for user growth, and gaming is as good a segment as any to provide it.

What I find far more likely is having MS studios force AI integration and generation into the games themselves, in a far more overt way than we've ever seen before.

She isn't going to listen to us. She is going to listen to the larger community. Not gaming community, HUMAN community. She wants to know why normies don't buy games in general, not why Playstation don't buy xbox mates.

This is not good for us necessarily since our tastes will be deemphasized in order to appeal to the casual market.

We have been here before.

Wii Sports is a good way to appeal to normies. That's the kind of shit that is needed to bring in new people and share your game console with your grandma.

Old people will never keep you afloat. Young people don't want dumb scripted games they want interactive experiences, such as AI LLMs or multiplayer. One thing I'd like to see is persistent AI companions that can play games with you and chat with you while you play. Imagine if the next Tekken had an AI partner thru a LLM that allowed you to play with and chat to the AI and then you could take that same AI over to streetfighter and play with them there and then take them to It Takes Two and again play together with the same AI, persistent memory. A gaming partner to play with and remember good times with at all times. THAT will sell. It could reinvigorate a dying genre. LLMs and persistent partner AI could revitalize the fighting game industry. You have only put your gamer hats on for so long, but think of what it would take to get someone really excited for a game. Not much, just imagination. Stop being luddites and only wanting new versions of the same shit. That's an old man's game(like me). Look beyond your existential fears and selflessly imagine what it will take to save this market. There is a reason these ideas may incite you. It's because they are fresh, exciting, and new. That's what we need. however we choose to get there. Otherwise we stagnate.

Naw if they were free falling and honestly didnt care then there wouldn't have been any changes made... something has to be changing for them to even go through the trouble of all of this.
Yeah, but acting so quickly and recklessly after making some big moves doesn't show confidence. I mean, if 3rd party publishing, Game Pass, were moves by Phil Spencer, why would you unplug it so quickly, before seeing the results? They haven't been "3rd" party for long. Like, why not wait and see if it will bring the results you want? Wanting to see them so quickly is silly because it's not gonna be overnight.

I don't think going 3rd party was Phil's call. I think he had to settle with that given the big moves he made.

The whiplash of leaving to work on a Friday morning as a guy who has for decades called shots on Halo, Xbox consoles, multibillion acquisitions, CoD roadmap, E3 keynotes… and leaving 10 minutes later a retired man who will have no say in any of that ever again, must require quite a stiff pour of whisky.

.....out of relief. Doing this while wiping the sweat off his forehead with $100 bills.

I hope I can be fired and then still get paid and attend events just hanging out and LOL'ing along. Guys getting looked after by MS for sure.

I dunno. It might also be one of his happiest days because he's been relieved from this absolute fucking shitshow. Nadella is ultimately responsible for the current state of Xbox because he's the fucking CEO of the fucking company.

yeah we know it was a firement
funny his broken cult still trying to save face for this moron.
his "career moment" will forever be killing xbox

Unless you're rich. Then you can sit back and relax. 38 Years at Microsoft, the man sucked the right dick and now may rest his weary jaw.
