20 years ago today AVGN launched his YouTube channel

BennyBlanco

aka IMurRIVAL69

Can't say I've really been paying attention to his more recent stuff but that early stuff was very good. Feels weird to see YouTubers celebrating 2 decade anniversaries.

Hmm missed the boat on him forever. Watched a few videos recently and it was fine or whatever. I like Angry Joe for my "guy yells about video games" content.

The first episode I saw was the Star Trek episode on GameTrailers in 2008. Was hooked, although I would say these past 11 years, I haven't been a daily watcher of AVGN. I'm more interested in James talking about film. He introduced me to a lot of classic movies that I have never seen or heard of.

Simiilar to some of you, I haven't really checked up on him in some time, but have fond memories of him playing the shitty games that sucked ass for our fun.

Some friends and I went on a road trip looking for that Rolling Rock beer. We eventually found some.
I can't for the life of me remember the beer but I do remember getting lost on the road for a while.
Good times.

What a shitload of fuck.

I didn't even realize it was regional. It's not even the good regional beer over here dude.

Their old stuff was brilliant and I can still watch anything they released up until his movie break.

Funnily I was introduced to Pat the NES Punk through their collab so when I saw Pat show up on Pawn Stars to "sell" his copy of NES World Championship the illusion of that show got shattered.

Was he on GameTrailers before or after YouTube?

This guy got copied by everyone, but he's still one of the best.

His stuff is a great reminder that there was a time when watching videos on the internet wasn't just going to Youtube. There was a time when you hopped between sites for your different content. GameTrailers was king for great video game stuff.

Also, you probably tried Rolling Rock after it was bought by Budweiser. After that happened the taste completely changed (kinda like when Trix got rid of the balls and turned into fruits) They were delicious back in the late 90s-early 00s.

"Fuck this shit! You don't know shit about how fuckin' shitty this fuckin' shit is. It's so bad, it sucks! It's so fuckin' suck it fucks!"

My favorite AVGN quote.

Don't think I've ever seen a video of his. Then again I don't watch many video game channels. I do remember a friend sending me a video many years ago about someone making fun of the old retro game Bible Adventures. Not sure if that was him or not. If it was, then I guess I did.

Semi-hot take (maybe cold take): His best content had always been when him and his team went out of their way to do historical research on games and he narrates all of the information.

A great example:

These gaming historian episodes aged way, way better than the skit stuff and most of the 'rage' content.

There was a solid 3-4 year stretch where a new AVGN episode was an EVENT. They were almost all hilarious.

At some point he started really overacting in the videos and they became more cringe than funny, though.

I may be misremembering this but I'm pretty sure the original three episodes James created in 2004 were circulating several months, maybe even a full year, before they were uploaded to YouTube. And not just on GameTrailers or other partner websites, but literally just in the form of downloads hosted on various sites.

I just caught Mew 5 minutes ago in Pokemon Red on my VC copy on my 3DS and I remember very well how we searched for it back in the days at the truck next to the cruise ship. Mew was a mystery for me for the past 30 years. I'm old and I damn well remember AVGN from 20 years ago. Needless to say: Happy anniversary!

The fact that no one here knows that he grew a beard 4 months ago just shows how long ago some of you have stopped watching him lol.

Oops lol.

I think the last thing I watched was his Earthbound video, and then before that the one where he plays Mario Maker levels his kid made :pie_thinking:.
I still tune in once a month for his monthly AVGN episodes. Otherwise I don't really look at his other content.

He still rotates back and forth between skit AVGN and regular/old-school AVGN where he simply goes in-depth on a game or device.

Oh I thought of another one. Wasn't there a kindasorta recent-ish one where he went through a whole bunch of Commodore 64 games? That was neat since I'm a bit too young to have ever used one of those.

And yeah, it's not like I've got anything against James, it's more that it's rare that I see a video from him and his group pop up that I'm like oh yeah I wanna watch that for sure.
