most of it is salary. US based devs will have to come face with reality when half of them are laid off. Either move to a cheaper state or get replaced by Pawel & Chang. That much budget for such a ugly ass looking game deserves to be a flop.
- Marathon did not chart inside Steam's top 10 at launch. It released with an 88,337 concurrent peak on its largest platform. That is a drop from the 143,621 peak during the free server slam (the game is now $40).
Since launch just over a month ago, those peaks have dropped by 68%, where the game most recently hit a 27,670 peak at the time of this writing.
- As I previously reported, the majority of Marathon's playerbase is on Steam, as confirmed by my sources. Alinea reports it as 70%
30% for 1st $10m in sales, 25% for sales between $10m-$50m and 20% for all sales after that. The PC being the main platform....they have to pay Valve 30% on every Steam sale right?
Maybe they can be a support studio for Fairgame$ aka Concord 4
A game like this is unlikely to have more than 3-4 maps in rotation every season. Arc Raiders had 4 at launch as well. This is fucking absurd.
6 years, more than 200m and still release with only 3 maps?
This has to be money laundry. Insane incompetency.
« I can confirm » Paul Tassi still believing his word has weight
If Schreier's tweet last month said "Budget for American/Canadian AAA games are $400m", Tassi would have said Marathon cost $350. These guys continually eat up each other's vomit and puke it back up until it sounds credible.Suddenly NeoGAF believes Paul Tassi lol
That's not even close to everything. Firewalk Studio acquisition + Concord at $300M+. Canceled TLOU and GOW GAAS. Sony likely burnt well over $1B over failed GAAS endeavors.$200m+ budget?
$3.6B Bungie Acquisition?
That's a mammoth ton of cash just burnt for Sorny.
I'm actually waiting for Fairgame. Not a single word about this game since the disaster of its announcement.
Imagine if they spent that money on 4-6 real games instead. That's not even close to everything. Firewalk Studio acquisition + Concord at $300M+. Canceled TLOU and GOW GAAS. Sony likely burnt well over $1B over failed GAAS endeavors.
Salaries in Sweden are also about 1/3rd lower than the USA.That number doesn't include marketing also.
As I mentioned in the other thread, Arc Raiders which currently has 5x the amount of CCU still months after launch was only $75 million to develop.
Think about that.
Ok so account for that and it's still around $100 million.Salaries in Sweden are also about 1/3rd lower than the USA.
To think Sony are sitting on multiple dormant but beloved franchises that fans are literally begging for sequels, but they went all in on this.
Simply a masterclass in corporate incompetence.
Salaries in Sweden are also about 1/3rd lower than the USA.
Not arguing that. Marathon is a different game than what Bungie originally pitched us. That kind of pivot costs money.Ok so account for that and it's still around $100 million.
Mismanagement with these projects is rife here.
I think it's much too late for that. What you're more likely to see happening is Sony pulling back significantly on investing in studios in the US. You're probably going to see more Korean and European studio investments.Should move out of the American North West then. The math ain't working where it costs this much and it will never hope to break even at the rate it's going.
Jesus Christ.
Between this, Concord and Spider-Man 2, Sony almost spent 1B on three heavily disappointing games.
So what exactly SONY's just going to keep bleeding moeny until they release their new big game thatll do gajillion dollars but for real this time. I think SONY might just want to sack them and save the embarassment of losing 3.85 billion dollars.I thought they said a while back that Marathon was a side project and not a bug release.
