Oh wait...

And how much of that was before or after acquisition ?

More and more it starting to seem like there was kojima-like levels of money wasting before and after.
Nvm this was a bad train of thought

Out of every single IP to bring back, or make rom scratch... They choose Marathon.

Cant make this up man.

So many sleeping giant IP's at Sony's disposal and they choose to buy Bungie for 3Billion dollars and have them make an extraction GAAS shooter. They deserve every bit of failure they get.

I would love to see one time on games like these how all the financials break down because that is incredibly excessive for what the game is currently. Like many of these games do have large marketing budgets but it's like where is that much money going and can a game like this be made with a smaller team.

Lets be clear, he is stating budget is well over 200, even over 250m, it could be 500m even if we count in enourmous marketing budget this game had, lets not even entertain the thought budget was only 200m or close to 200m, it was lots higher.

I can't believe it cost that much. There is not much content in the game to even justify that budget
The art looks expensive.

The game doesn't even have mo-cap or animated cutscenes, so it is puzzling where all the budget went.

Gaming is better today than it has ever been apparently... 200 million PLUS for this fucking game? And they are expecting millions upon millions to buy this shit and spend more money on it? Sony are out of their fucking minds. Gaming is heading down a very dangerous path. Budgets need to be reeled in. I suppose though it's all worth it when digital foundry review it and blow loads over the ray tracing and path tracing or whatever else gets the less than 1% of gamers hard today...

Expensive coffee, yoga sessions, cool team building activities, a dog-friendly space in the office, the manager's new car...

Tassi says he has inside sources in Bungie. He's not using Alinea analytics numbers. He just confirmed them with his inside sources in Bungie. I don't see a reason why he would lie about having sources with them.

Anyway, having sold about 1.2 million at $40 with the majority on PC I'm not even sure it's hit $40 million in revenue yet. This is a colossal flop. I don't think it'll even get close to 100 million in revenue lifetime, and then you add in ongoing costs as well if they continue to pump out content. We're looking at a legit near $200 million loss assuming a $250 million "likely" budget.

I guess it matters how long the game was in actual development for and did it have major reworkings or iterations and I imagine the massive delay on the game for the plagiarized stuff cost them a lot as well. I Imagine the marketing for this game is through the roof as that seems to be where a good portion of many budgets go.

You guys realize we have a running theory that men in boxes hasn't actually bought marathon yet. He won't play with anyone on GAF and his posts in the OT are apparently lunatics ramblings asking for things like far away revives when literally triage can do just that with his ult….

No wonder the Japanese bean counter had to take back the wheel and get back on the road.

It feels like mass layoffs are coming for Bungie any day now. :messenger_pensive:

The $250M is all in? Or excludes marketing?

Project budgets for games, movies or TV are often vague. Even if just estimates, sometimes it's just production budgets, sometimes the person states it includes marketing.

Regardless, looks like minimum $250M even if that includes it.

I don't believe this. Just like how Concord supposedly cost $400 million. Total BS. $100 million likely. $150 million possibly. But $250 million? No way.
People who claim marketing cost another $200 million make no sense. Where is that even going? Streamers?

I actually find the premise alluring, but I'm not keen on dropping 40 bones on a product that may not stick around too long. It's like a damned if you do damned if you don't situation.

:messenger_tears_of_joy: Sony's GAAS strategy this gen has been a total disaster. I called it when they started this stupid initiative back in the day.

It's not like I hate every GAAS game, I enjoy a few of them but most of them are garbage and end up failing. Sony should have done deals with second/third party partners to get GAAS money instead of buying studios and wasting millions trying to turn their existing studios into GAAS factories. Part of me is glad these GAAS games have all been disasters because I'd hate to live in a world where studios like Insomniac, ND, etc. are GAAS factories. Sony should stick to what they are good at. They need to shut down all these flops like Fairgame$, Horizon MMO, etc., get Bungie under control, and get back to making the single player games that got their brand popular in the first place.

I have to say, from where I'm sitting, it sure doesn't look like that much money went into it. It doesn't even have a campaign.

That's the sad thing. But the game was supposedly started in 2019/2020. So you got a chunk of Bungie working on it for 6 years. And that even includes a 6 month delay as the game was supposed to release in Sep 2025.

You'd think a lot of highly paid employees with Halo and Destiny experience would know how to make a shooter game that sells. Instead you got:

- A niche extraction shooter
- Crazy blinding visuals
- Plagiarized artwork
- No SP campaign
- 1 mode
- A handful of maps. And they arent even Tarkov or ARC map sizes
- No SBMM, which leads to good gamers with top gear curb stomping
- Trio focused teamplay where solo mode was tacked on during Xmas development, with Ranked and Cryo not even allowing solo
- No meaningful content until Season 2 which is three months from launch. In the these three months it's weekly gameplay tweaks to fill the gap
- $40

If the game launched on time in Sep, the game didnt even have solo queues or prox chat either. Add it up and who knows where the money went.
