[Jez] Windows and Xbox are now prioritizing user feedback in a huge pivot...but why now? I can't help but be suspicious — it smells a bit like panic

The reality is, it's impossible. Steam's foundation is too strong, its player base too large, service too established. The time has long passed for there to be any possibility of creating competition for Steam. (No, of course, with some financial investment, it's possible—but the cost would be simply astronomical).

Well they are still a two trillion dollar corporation. It's possible, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze for Microsoft. They are primarily a B2B company.

In reality, there is less money there, because the market valuation has never given a real idea of the real value of a company. It is an open market, where any company in a day, because of someone somewhere sneezing (This is a joke, by the way - just in case :messenger_tears_of_joy:), can lose a couple of billions in value, and then successfully get them back just as well. I think a big factor here is that you need to carefully weigh whether the money spent is worth the end result. And it seems to me that after Activision Blizzard, Microsoft's ambitions in purchasing and spending money have significantly diminished, and they will be much more careful in the future.

He cherry-picks specific points to paint a fake picture, I don't know if he understands what he just wrote. He is trying to say that Microsoft might need Xbox as a stable cornerstone because of bad AI investments? what?

they should copy Steam... just copy Steam...

first thing they should copy is Steam's controller settings. I want full per-game rebinds, per game analog stick adjustments (reaction curve, deadzone, negative deadzone), and GYRO EMULATION...

release your fucking gyro controller already! we know you worked on it! we saw the leaks guys! release it and allow us to bind the gyro to stick and mouse inputs in all games like Steam allows it, including gyro on/off trigger settings etc.

How in the world is datacenter infrastructure "specifically designed" for ChatGPT and OpenAI's models?

And how has any of this "poisoned the Azure cloud"? Does he have evidence that it's killed Azure profitability?
A data center for AI is an "ultra" version of a data center.

I don't know, 10x more power, 10x more cooling?

Cooling, for example, is a no-go; are you going to return half the cooling towers?

And the transmission line you already paid for? Double the capacity of a normal data center?

I think that's the gist of it. Building a data center for AI costs twice as much as a "normal" data center, and if the AI flops and you convert to a "normal data center" you lose all the extra money you spent.

Microsoft is lucky they have Azure, because Windows has been going downhill for 20 years now. I'm guessing they expected AI to be another pillar of their offerings, but they are so shockingly bad at it...as a matter of fact, Steve Jobs said it best.

"Microsoft has no taste" and definitely has zero imagination.

From what I see, I think what sustains Microsoft today isn't Azure, it's Office/Windows... It's the rental/licensing of Office and Windows to companies that sustains Microsoft.

Server/Cloud services generates more money than Windows/Office combined.

Pretty sure Office 365 and Azure are basically equals.
The last time I saw Microsoft's "creative accounting," it was basically this: rent Office and get 1TB of OneDrive as a bonus, and we'll declare that you bought 1TB of OneDrive (Azure) and got Office as a bonus.

One Drive is a part of Office 365 not Azure. They separated the revenue of Office (aka Office 365) and Azure recently. Not sure why you think Microsoft would have to game their Azure numbers.

I love how Jez can take a bonkers shower thought scheme* to take xbox back to not just relevance but the cornerstone of Microsoft's core business, and splooge it out through his internal ExtendThisTextLikeI'mDesperateToHitThe2000WordCountForMyHomework.bat and have the stones to post it online for others to be subjected to.

*I'm in no way implying or suggesting Jez takes showers

I can't help but be suspicious.
I can't help but feel
I can't help but feel

There there, Jeremy... there there.

Have a little lie down and sip a little lukewarm bean juice. AI is but a blip, that big old meanie Satya is going to remember what made Microsoft great eventually - xbox.

Yeah, he clearly just wanted to write about Microsoft & OpenAI in light of the Ronan Farrow New Yorker article, but had to put an Xbox spin because he's the Xbox guy, I guess? And his only "in" was. "Hey, Microsoft is doing a lot of surveys lately. What's that about? Is this fine?"

Well they are, according to most people in the know, Customer 'A' for Nvidia contributing over 20% of their revenue.

Huge amount to be spending on that hardware which is why the team they originally built for surface, Xbox and hololens custom silicon pivoted and produced Maia, which is custom silicon for inference. I.e. running the models at scale.

Microsoft claims their own chips are 30% cheaper, but the real value is in the reduced opex for them as it's 750w Vs nvidias 1200w. The Maia platform is denser, cooler and cheaper to run.

The b200 racks are still required for training though, but there are rumours they have custom silicon inbound for this.

Maia 3 is due next year built on intel 18a so should be cheaper still.

GitHub copilot is genuinely useful
Copilot I think I've used once in windows. Crazy they built it into notepad, although they are rolling out out of all the places it's not needed now

Sounds like the classic.

This is just a hyperthetical but anyone who works in business has probably experienced it.

My guess, Phil was actually a half decent guy but was too nice. Evidence over the years points to this.

He was attempting to captain a ship that was owned by a massive company and got absolutely done in from it. He stepped down, something that can shock a company like MS when an employee of that level retires. With 40 years at the same company. Phil looked broken and gave up.

Sometimes , the dust clears, the stars align and a company finally realises they lost a good egg. AI is being called slop, microslop etc. Investors and satya will be shook. They hire a girl and he HAS to give her the resources to carry out her ideas. Probably something Phil was wrestling with. Budget etc.

Microslop is seeing where the ai bubble is going and they damage it has done to their company. They see steam succeeding and chipping away at xbox and more importantly from a business perspective they can see more people are migrating to pc than plaustation. Pc that it their bread and butter.

They simply HAVE to support xbox now. They lost its champion and have to apply funds to strengthen it in the race of increased competition and a public that is basically fed up with the company and its direction.

Big opportunity for Xbox to use this opportunity to get what the leaders there want and hopefully its good for all of us.

Sorry but this reads like the soapy fan fiction / novel you read in the bathtub, with candles lit, and sipping your white wine.

MSFT stock is down a lot from ATH because of extremely negative corporate feedback about Copilot and AI shit and their corporate sales and uptake rate on Copilot and AI shit has been nothing short of catastrophic

Let me clear that corporate money is 99% of MS's revenues and profits, they don't really give a shit about consumers because Windows is given away for free to consumers anyways and Xbox is a rounding error in their balance sheet. The only thing carrying Microsoft Gaming is Activision Blizzard

The fact that they are soliciting user feedback isn't because they want consumer feedback. They couldn't give less of a shit. The feedback they want is from the corporations who pay actual money for Windows, Office, and Azure licenses

Sounds like he's upset that Phil got his marching orders when in reality he has left Xbox in the worst state it's ever been in. Totally direction less.

Fancy discussing, from your experience in the industry why it reads like fan fiction?

I was attempting to be positive about our industry that we hold dearly, but clearly something in the way I have put it you disagree with so I am happy to look at other angles, what do you think could be going on?

These people are so desperate to believe in the predictability of human behaviour (because their own career depend on this fiction), that they'd rather spend another couple million on a new "cool" ad campaign than actually change the corporate culture inside their own companies. But people aren't just stupid or mindless robots. No matter how many diverse, grinning, happy faces you put on your ads. People know your whole org is rotten from the core inside, with nothing but opportunistic, narcissistic and corrupt assholes in top positions. Apparently they don't like that.

Microsoft is all ears only when something serious about Windows is happening, not Xbox, the attention scale is vastly different. This time it's Windows definitely. I don't know, a unified launcher to please everyone, I don't want the shape of the industry we have today based on some foolish personal decision that happened in 2005 like Valve and Windows live, we need to move pass that point of immaturity.

But huge changes are exactly what they need to do. Doing the same things that got them to the state they are in would only confirm their death sentence.

The fact that most of these Xbox updates seem to be feverishly copying as many Steam features as they can also feels like panic :pie_thinking:
They are repositioning to fight Steam instead of Playstation. So makes sense that they want to gain as much feature parity as possible before they actually turn the ignition on.

The reality is, it's impossible. Steam's foundation is too strong, its player base too large, service too established. So in other words.. A monopoly?

Shill care packages are being sent out

The funniest thing is Destin trying to tease his when other shills already unboxed the thing lmao.

Man should have never left IGN.

He admits AI isn't going anywhere. He's way off when he says AI might be no more than an auto-complete tool.

.....okay, so how to say this exactly.....

You are using phrases as pejoratives like "auto-complete tool" as if being defined as that limits one in any way.

What I'm saying is look at what you are. Are you a shitting machine? Of course you are, but you are also more. So is AI.

Imagine a human who wasn't human but kinda close, like Martian, but they have all the human faults. How poorly would they describe us? Imagine if we turned our cynical critical comments about AI towards humans. I've done it myself, actually. I'd post it here but it's pretty misanthropic. It would not set well with most human mental health.

Oh My God................this is such an amazing point that I'm stealing it lol. It's perfect and straight to the point. The Anti-AI people are getting to be as annoying as the Anti-DEI people. And it's all due to the same thing. There's no nuance that they can accept in the converstation.

And lately I've seen Destin change within the last week or so with his "coverage" now also.

He's been entirely unmoored ever since he left IGN. He's kinda caught between catering towards an Xbox audience that is slowly dying off and the larger mainstream gaming audience that he has no idea how to engage.

I have sympathy for him tbh because I'm not entirely sure whether his exit was self-driven or not.
