PS6S Budget Model Rumored at $350-$550 According to MLID

According to MLID, Sony might be working on a cheaper PS6S type console alongside the main PS6.

The idea is basically a cut down version of the same APU used in the PS6 handheld, just without the screen and battery. So more like a small traditional living room console focused on efficiency and cost rather than high end performance.

If this turns out to be real, pricing could land somewhere around $350 to $550, making it the entry level option in a possible three tier setup. PS6 as the premium machine, a handheld in the middle, and this budget box at the low end.

Honestly it feels like Sony does not really have much of a choice here. If they want to get back to something like 100 million+ consoles sold again, they will probably need a cheaper entry point like a PS6S. A single high priced flagship console alone just will not be enough to reach those mass market numbers.

It feels a bit like Sony going back to a PS4 style strategy again, pushing aggressive pricing to expand the ecosystem and keep momentum going.

The only problem I see with these weaker consoles is that they can delay or limit the ambition of game development during the generation, like the Series S does. Unless Mark Cerny finds a good solution for that, I don't see this kind of console as a good idea.

So it's a console version of the handheld

I'll grab the main console and the handheld and call it a day.
Maybe by then the tariffs will be gone and we can get the main console for $699

I honestly don't think Sony will succeed with this. The PS6 will be the big thing; nobody will want a budget version of it. Therefore, the PS6 itself should be available at a price that the masses find acceptable.

I understand that the current situation isn't ideal, but I still doubt the success of a console that will be significantly more expensive than previous generations, and then they try to attract buyers with a budget version that nobody wants because the performance difference to the PS5 probably won't even be there. Even if it says PlayStation on it instead of "Series S."

To clarify it's basically like the Vita TV. It has the PS6 handheld specs, but just without the screen. It's going to have Zen 6 CPUs, a GPU with 3x better ray tracing than base PS5, PSS2+/PSS3 upscaling and 24GBs of ram, it will be fine.

Even without the RAM price hikes, it was going to be $599 or $699 without the drive. A cheaper console is going to be needed for the GAAS only people.

Now I assume that will be the PS5.

Why is Sony always some kind of a mirror to xbox. Its so weird.
It's because the current leaders at Sony are bereft of vision. Btw, that comment isn't in reference to Cerny but to those deciding the strategy. Having multiple skus will affect economies of scale and make it difficult to reduce the cost of the device in the future. The multiple sku is what partially killed Microsoft hardware this gen. The price has remained elevated and the cost of shrinking both SKUs made no financial sense in the long run. As a result, they priced themselves out of the rest of the gen.

Sony might simply be forced to go that route in order to reach the usual 100+ million sales, as has been mentioned here in the thread already by someone else.
Sony isn't forced to anything and something being mentioned here isn't a truth or fact. If Sony goes multiple SKU day one it is madness and nothing else.

makes perfect sense. and I bet Microsoft will do the same.

Xbox Series X2
Xbox Series S2

being a stationary console also means you can probably clock the APU quite a bit higher if you have proper cooling in it.
