The acquisition of Rovio has been a complete disaster for Sega

Since 2023 Sega has lost over 200 million dollars thanks to Rovio's terrible performance . Sonic Rumble was a complete flop and Angry birds 2 revenue has grinded to a halt.

Btw Sega purchased Rovio for 776 million dollars, so they're currently 1 billion dollars in the red on their Rovio investment.

With 1 billion dollars they could have bought Embracer Group right after the Saudi deal collapsed, instead they bought Rovio. SEGA and bad financial decisions, name a more iconic duo.

They just cancelled Super Game, probably in no small part to this.

Just the other day I was playing Sonic Racing Crossworlds and thought to myself, why do those characters look so much like Angry Birds...and then after checking them out , realizing they WERE Angry birds, I asked, out loud, why in the fuck are Angry Birds in this game?!? Especially when so many other iconic Sega characters were omitted.
Had no idea they purchased Rovio.
Absolutely terrible idea.

The Super Game being cancelled is a direct result of Sega's misfortunes in the GASS market.

100 million $ loss on Hyenas
200 million $ loss on Rovio ( not counting the 776 million $ spent on acquiring them )

The Super Game was going to be yet another live service game, so it's no surprise that given these results they decided to cancel that project before they took another L

I keep forgetting that this happened. There are some really good people even high up on the business teams there, but there are enough fucking idiots in the driver's seat that shit like this keeps happening. To be a fly on the wall in some of those discussions...

Been playing some Angry Birds Trilogy (PS3) on RPCS3 for a bit lately.
They should re-release that stuff, would give them some pocket change to cover the losses.

I wonder why Angry Birds didn't take off? Initial games were very good, I enjoyed Angry Birds and themed stuff Star Wars, Rio & Bad Piggies. It all went down when you had P2W in-app shit that pretty much won you the level and I suppose the levels were designed in such a way that it was near impossible to get all stars without those in-app power-ups.

Second, I also believe Angry Birds was not casual and infinite like Subway Surfers (this mobile, infinite runner btw has a season pass), Candy Crush and also portrait mobile games tend to do better as they are much comfortable to play.

It's a shame though as Rovio never innovated and doubled down on shitty MTX, weirdly branched into movies (which were quite fun!) and let's just say the success of Angry Birds was purely a matter of Zeitgeist, iPhone/App Store launch success.

oh so well, pouring another glass or two for Rovio, and I apologize, I haven't poured for Spiders which shut down recently, Wildlight Entertainment (HighGuard devs) and of course, Bluepoint!

imagine if Sega never sold that Nvidia stock.
They would literally be a trillion dollar company right now, capable of buying both Sony and Nintendo if they wanted, and still have like 500 billion dollars left in the bank afterwards.

Wonder if that's why they tried charging like £65-70 for the last 2 sonic games. Hope it chokes em, greedy dumb bitches.
Sonic Racing was genuinely a pretty content filled, polished title. Its worth the $70 price tag imo, I've put like 50+ hours into it unlike boring-as-shit MKWorld.

Not sure what the other game is youre referring to, Superstars was $60 in USD, that was a little steep.

This just reminded me that OG Angry Birds was fucking awesome and you can't get it anymore probably because it wasn't predatory enough.

Or not. I don't know. But it ruled.

That's exactly the reason why it was delisted. The OG Angry birds game wasn't a GASS game, and Rovio wasn't earning as much from it as they were from the newer games ( which had a fraction of the player base but made much more money thanks to the micro transactions and pay pigs ), so Rovio decided to delist it .

Sega should just get Atlus to make more games release them and then re-release them 6 months later with a definitive edition

My "everyone's a cunt" detector wasn't lying then! Depressing, the others weren't nearly as fun imo.

i remember really enjoying that re-issue/re-release of the OG game but recall them fumbling it due to titling issues or something like that.

Its such a early 2010's IP, I dunno how you reignite it nowadays beyond a simple and satisfying game. same for like where's my water? and Cut the Rope.

Could be a phenomenon but a quiet one at best.

Before the news about Sega purchasing them, I didn't even know Angry Birds was still a thing.

Why not invest in Tamagotchi at this point.

Sega aways has some incredibly stupid ideas when Sonic is involved. I call it Sonics curse or Sonic autism.

Who?

I played the PSP one via emulation on one of my handhelds out of the blue the other day, was a good time.
They could do licensed rekins and shit too.
An AngryXBirdsXBallXPit DLC would be pretty funny.
Yeah, there are ways to recoup that money.
Also, wasn't a BIG part of that acquisition being that it included an ENTIRE animation studio as well? Like, there was an Angry Birds animated show or something at one point. Surely that would lead to a new Sonic cartoon or something too?

That's not how this works. They are taking a right down of 200 million - meaning they value Rovio at $576 million now. They haven't had an actual loss of 200 million.
They have had maybe 500 million euros in revenue from the acquisition, maybe even some profit - so it hasn't been close to as big a failure as you are making out - but still a failure.

It's still insane that they paid over $700 million for Angry birds....in 2023.
What's next? A billion dollar deal to acquire Neopets?

Angry Birds was the quality of a flash game that got Lucky once.

They havent done shit since that. How dumb is SEGA?

You'd be correct, if it wasn't Sega. They'd find a way to lose it all.

Make a new angry birds but use Sonic characters instead. It's probably what mobile gamers really want.

That's a genuinely good idea.
Sonic goes fast (and precise), shadow can phase, Knuckles/Amy hit hard and you wreck Eggman's shit.

Just need a two hour brainstorm session and it's time to throw together a prototype.

Nintendo, please put Sega out of its eternal misery and buy them out. $2.9b well spent and control over incredible IP's that you could do justice to

I honestly don't see how Nintendo could do justice to any Sega IP.
If anything, the contrary would be true, as F-Zero GX clearly showed.

At least they pulled back from the "super game" that would have been another super GAAS flop before embarrassing themselves more, Sony should try to do the same.

Sonic might actually get some decent games. Imagine a Sonic game developed by Nintendo EPD.

Would be worth it just for that.

Sega IPs are for the most part arcade, fast, funky, cool, frenetic and violent, while Nintendo games are generally the exact opposite of that.

I'll say Nintendo wouldn't be able to make a good 3D Sonic game.

Sega hasn't been able to make a good 3D sonic game either, so I doubt Nintendo could do any worse.

The last two 3D Sonic games ( Frontiers and Shadow Generations ) were both great so this argument really doesn't hold any water anymore.

SEGA fans will be sighing what-ifs and could-haves for the rest of their days. For every mega win like a Sonic movie, they have a mega loss to soak it up. They can't catch a break since mid 90s and it's all self-inflicted. Said as someone who wants/wanted them to succeed badly.
