If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Fall/Holiday Launch for WiiU seems like it'll be at the right time. The market will be ready for the next home console gen.

Jump to conclusions much? Either way 1.7 mil is not a bad number at all

It's bad *compared to expectations*, at least of the sales mavens like me.

Hell I thought maybe 360 could touch 3m...

But yet 360 did very well in Nov. What did Nov have? well, crazy BF sales. Which again makes me wonder if the recession is more in force than people think, despite media reports claiming improving economy...

Geez you're full of it.

What did IBM and Global Foundries(AMD) partner on?
Xbox 360, Xbox 360 Slim

Wii U CPU is made elsewhere at IBM's Fishkill plant.

Workers prep Global Foundries' newest semiconductor factory, "Fab 8" in Saratoga County, New York State. The fab comes on line for the first time with a maiden production run of microprocessors based on IBM's latest, 32nm, silicon-on-insulator chip technology. The chips will be used by manufacturers in networking, gaming and graphics.

So why is everyone saying X360 "only" sold 1.7M?!? That tweet said it sold more than 1.7M, so it could be > 2.0M or I'm missing something here?

Would take a 2006 level of over shipping or sales around the world are much higher than last year. Something isn't adding up here.

If true, 360 successor development will be getting fast tracked.

edit-wow, I expect to see a price drop soon if they have that many units sitting in the channel at the moment.

Sorry if it's already been posted:
With a strong holiday sales period finishing a banner year, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 ended 2011 as the best-selling current-generation console in the U.S., outselling the second place console by more than 2.7 million units. The strong December capped an impressive year during which Xbox 360 was the fastest-growing console. It also captured 49 percent of consumer retail spending, with an industry-leading $6.7 billion in sales in the U.S. for the calendar year—more than $2.1 billion on consoles and $4.6 billion on games and accessories (Source: NPD Group, December 2011).

Xbox 360 was the must-have gift this holiday season with about half of December’s retail spend on games, consoles and accessories going toward Xbox 360 products, totaling more than $1.5 billion (Source: NPD Group, December 2011). Microsoft has now sold more than 66 million Xbox 360* consoles and more than 18 million Kinect* sensors worldwide, and now has nearly 40 million Xbox LIVE members.*

December 2011 NPD highlights:
· Holding a 46 percent share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold more than 1.7 million units in December, solidifying the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. This marks the tenth consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share, and twelfth straight month Xbox 360 was the top-selling console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, December 2011.

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in December (hardware, software and accessories) reached $1.5 billion, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, December 2011).

· During the month of December, Xbox 360 had seven of the top 10 console game titles including: “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3,” Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Battlefield 3,” “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations,” “Just Dance 3,” “Kinect Sports Season Two” and “Dance Central 2,” (Source: NPD Group, December 2011).

· For 2011, Xbox 360 had six of the top 10 console game titles including “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3,” “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Gears of War 3,” “Battlefield 3,” “Madden NFL 12,” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” (Source: NPD Group, December 2011).

This week at CES Microsoft showed many of the ways Xbox 360 and Kinect will continue with strong momentum in 2012, including new Xbox LIVE content partners such as News Corp. Xbox 360 owners are excited about this new, fun, and interactive way to enjoy their favorite content:
· The hours of video consumed globally on Xbox LIVE increased 140 percent from 2010 to 2011.*

· In December more than 60 percent of U.S. Xbox LIVE Gold members used entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE – for an average of an hour a day each.*

· The number of people using entertainment apps on Xbox LIVE increased by nearly 50 percent globally from November to December.*

Beyond gaming, Microsoft will soon sell a Kinect for Windows sensor designed for commercial applications, bringing the magic of Kinect to whole new audiences including education, manufacturing and healthcare. Looking forward to an exciting 2012, we expect new audiences for Kinect, new experience for Xbox LIVE and a new installment in the world-class Halo and Fable franchises to help Xbox 360 have yet another stellar year.

This is what happens when innovation stops. 2011 was the most boring year for gaming I can remember. Everything was pretty much sequels, more of the same or HD remakes. Hopefully the Wii U can freshen up the industry again and clear out the cobwebs, seeing as it doesn't look like we'll be getting a new Xbox or Playstation anytime soon.

This is the biggest problem with the extended generation. Almost everything has a 3 or 4 attached to it. After awhile it gets a bit old hat, even with the best of franchises.

It is likely that they would have said "more than 1.8 million" (or higher depending on what the number is) if it was higher.

I would be stupid to sell 2 millions and tell the people greater than 1.7. They could have told greater than 1 million or 1.5 or 0.5.

Had it sold 2m he would have said over 2m.
Probably..

It's kinda worrying that it has been narrowed to Mario and Pokemon :/ Zelda clearly doesn't garner mass excitement anymore.

Also Super Smash, and Kirby, and Donkey Kong.
Zelda was just a victim of mismanagement, mishandling and very bad timing.

Actually, I wonder if Black Friday this year threw everything off. The insane deals meant that a good chunk of the people that would've waited until December to get an Xbox may have just gotten it in November instead.

Generally, whenever a company says "over" a figure they mean "close to" that figure. Think about it: if the 360 had sold over 2 million units, wouldn't Microsoft had boasted about it?

Sony are being extra vague this time... Improvements specified only as YTD and just repeating that 6.5mil number.

I have to say, I LOVE that Skyrim is up there still and Zelda is nowhere to be seen.

It tells Nintendo that there is still interest in Fantasy Action RPGs and they need to begin to think about why Zelda isn't performing as it should, even within the genre.

Top ten is pretty lame, shows the US buyers have game taste like they do in pop music and fast food. Lowest common denominator stuff.

Yes, if they sold over 1.8-1.9-2.0 million then they'd say as much in the press release. There's no logical reason to assume that they picked 1.7 because they sold over 2.

So, Wii+PS3=~2m?

Supposedly by Nintendo's recent PR, if we trust that, you can work out that Wii did 1-1.2.

Would leave PS3 at 800,000-1,000,000. I'd leave it at ~1m each for now though.

this is interesting.

Again, why just 360? Very odd around here...

Because of the sales/shipment number they gave and the amount of sales it would require to get there. They either sold really, really well in the rest of the world or both Microsoft and retailers seriously over estimated the demand for the 360.

If they are that far off on demand then I think they will be re evaluating the pace of their next gen plans.
