NPD Sales Results for February 2013 [Up5: Dead Space 3, Crysis 3, Official PS3/WiiU]

I'm amazed Fire Emblem only did 117k considering how sold out it was. They must have shipped like...120k copies.

NOA have only themselves to blame for this. Undershipping plus additional shipment cockups with their distributors to the retail outlets prevented this game from charting and scoring another 3DS win. Easily could've overtook Sly 4 in the retail charts other wise, the demand was phenomenal and some prefer to wait for a restock rather than suffer through the pain in the ass Nintendo Eshop when it comes to downloads on the 3DS.

It's just a dumb remark in my angry spiel, what I meant is that they are running the risk of being left in the dust and suffering another Gamecube.

At this point they should focus on putting out their well known stable of IPs at a quicker pace, it probably won't alter the fate of the console, but it will keep it from sinking any deeper.
Quicker pace, how? By rushing them? Release them unfinished?
For better or for worse, if they're not done.... they're not done. lol, shitty situation for them.

Wow, surprising for both Sly and FE.

Guess they ran a lower print of FE, and I wonder the impact of cross-buy on Sly.

I don't feel so bad for waiting on it now either.

Exactly they really have no option. Rushing the games will only hurt the system in the end

see: my post about how there was that drought btw wii--->wiiU. They sat on their asses. There was no output on wii which meant that they should have games for wiiU. Ps4? ps3's still has games up til TLOU but the platform will have heavy hitters ready to go. Both 1st/2nd/3rd parties. Guaranteed.

Apparently they have.

It's not looking good at all right now. They need to start cranking out first party games asap.

my thread. :p

Pubs and devs never recoiled from PS3 like they seem to be with Wii U (though this is anecdotal). There was always the confidence that the numbers would get there over time with PS3. I'm not sensing that with Wii U.

I had a data point yesterday at lunch with a high budget Wii U game that was hoping to sell "millions" over time. It only managed "tens of thousands".

only 4 games crossed 100,000.

the platform is .... ______.

get some go again
386,908 as of March 10th. PS3 only.

~400k after 3 weeks

As of last weeks MediaCreate:-

12./08. [PS3] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance # <ACT> (Konami) {2013.02.21} (¥6.980) - 17.833 / 386.908 (-70%)

386,908 or 411,585 so far, depending on whether you go by Media Create or Famitsu numbers respectively (launch week numbers being 308,681 and 335,791).
thank you all for the answer. wow those numbers are incredible. i always thought metal gear was more popular here than japan.

I'm just surprised that Iwata let the Wii U get to this situation. I remember him reiterating so many times that the main lesson learned from the 3DS is to not have any droughts, and to have a good software lineup and all that. He said this like 10 times. And then went ahead and didn't listen to himself.

I'm not surprised by the poor sales all around on software, people just aren't buying AAA games anymore. DS3 selling 600k or so should have been great, but escalating budgets means AAA titles need to sell millions, which they fail to do... The poor sales of MGS: Revengeance is also disheartening, but they really should have had some sort of pre-order discounts since gamers just aren't willing to spend $60 anymore unless it is CoD or Madden.

Poor WiiU, Nintendo made so many mistakes with horrible naming, no advertising, failing to launch games when they stopped making Wii games 2 years ago, and underpowered hardware due to the Japanese-centric power requirement of 40 watts. The only way the WiiU could have succeeded with 3rd parties was to make it powerful enough to have a vastly superior port over the 360/PS3 versions - otherwise why would anyone buy a 3rd party game on the WiiU, which means game developers don't even bother. Just imagine if Nintendo allowed the system to be 80 watts, enabling a much higher clocked CPU (the CPU was never going to be a true powerhouse due to wanting 100% Wii compatibility), a much more powerful AMD GPU, 2 GB GDDR5 memory, etc. Aside from multiplayer centric titles, gamers would have flocked to WiiU 3rd party titles if the WiiU ports were vastly superior in picture IQ and FPS.

The Vita is even worse, goes without saying .......... Only difference is that there is far less riding on the Vita than the Wii U.

Mario and Zelda games will lift numbers, to about GameCube levels if they are lucky ....... Wii numbers are gone, won't even reach half of that.

We are only 4 months in and people are already saying it's impossible that the Wii U do 50m world wide?

Alright than, I guess people forgot Sony turned around the PS3, and Nintendo turned around the 3DS.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Wow dead space did really well with a tad over 600k. Co op and more action or just a ton more marketing spend?

Yep. I was totally shocked at how unavailable it was. "Oh wow, cool look how much hype this game is getting!" Nope - they just under-shipped a great game. Sales were great for a Fire Emblem game and it'll have a long tail but it wasn't the huge breakout commercial hit it appeared to be.

You have to wonder how much it would have sold if they got like 250k boxes on the streets.

Oh well - like I said it'll have a long tail. People that couldn't find it will pick it up as it becomes available, and there won't be that many used copies out there (for a 3DS game).

Poor Wii u.... mine has been collecting dust as well. I'm sure when compelling software drops its will sell.

Yay! Sly! I feared that Sony sent it out to die! Hopefully we can get a sequel!

Thing is, the PS3 and the 3DS have something called 3rd party support. The former had a lot of support pledged to it before its horrible launch and was able to piggyback off the 360's multiplats. The latter has a bright future because it's selling like crazy in Japan. Where is the 3rd party support coming from for the Wii U?

We saw what happened in the worse and best case scenarios for a console with paltry 3rd party support in the GC and Wii. Guess which one the Wii U most resembles at this point?

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
I wish MGR sold better, but being part of a bigger franchise and selling so well in Japan will hopefully help. I think that if we get another though they'll probably just skip the MS console SKU altogether.

The company got too conservative during the peak of the Wii. They should have taken more of the record profits and increased their development team sizes, and either created new studios or purchased new studios to help create HD content.

Sony and MS must be making a killing on their hardware profits. Especially Sony with the cheaply made PS3 slim.

The WiiU and Vita is doing pathetically, especially the WiiU for a new console.

Are these February 2006 numbers accurate?

A comparison between the last generational transition and the present. (Although, N.B. 2013 has one extra week of sales for January).

EDIT: Something went wrong in my spreadsheet.

Why are people so bummed about MGR. It's in the top 10 how bad can it be?
I don't think those sales are "bad" at all. They're just disappointing because MGR deserves better than that.

It's good to know that the action gaming genre isn't dying worldwide though. Well... not dying anywhere accept in the US. smfh

Thing is... I think they did have games planned to kind of avoid the 3DS situation. For example games like Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Lego City were originally planned for the that 4 month launch window (Nov-February). So something happened that made them delay them (probably development problems)

He really must have thought it was going to take off like the Wii did, that's the only way I can make sense of it.

Or they were never really ready?

Consoles seem to be doing really well still. Impressive. Except for the Wii U :( Portables quite a bit worse, too, which is unfortunate.

Alright than, I guess people forgot Sony turned around the PS3, and Nintendo turned around the 3DS.

Sony "turned the PS3 around" because the system was ridiculously overpriced and the software wasn't up to snuff.

People were just waiting on the sidelines.

Nintendo isn't in the same boat; the best they can probably manage is to excite their core audience and gain back the GameCube fans with core releases.

The Wii audience has moved on and is completely indifferent. They are not waiting on the sidelines for the right set of price and software. They are long gone.

It's a good thing Nintendo is now really into publishing third party games and doing calibrations.

I think that can really help.

Iwata must be ecstatic. He wanted a system with very low power draw because you know that's what gamers care about. Not only did he achieve his goal but with the numbers wiiu is pulling the overall environmental impact is tiny. Huge success, give yourself a pat on the back.

Lol.
