NPD Sales Results for February 2013 [Up5: Dead Space 3, Crysis 3, Official PS3/WiiU]

So if this is right, Wii U owners are more interested in Epic Mickey 2, Wipeout 3 (LOL), ESPN Sports Connection and SiNG PARTY over Darksiders II, NBA 2k13, Ninja Gaiden 3 RE, Madden 13, FIFA 13, Tekken Tag 2. etc.

Hate to say it, but third parties are completely justified in ignoring the console.
Mileena stop! ZombiU outsold all those games.

We are interested in original, good games. Nobody asked for Ninja Gaiden, Tekken, etc.

JD4 over 100k is quite impressive in that I honestly saw it as a complete bomb.
Not amazing figures, but not anything to be scoffed at with such a small userbase.

JD is a mega franchise on wii. 100k is extremely underwhelming. 3 months in? 30k/mo? Ubisoft won't be happy

COD:BLOPS2
[360] 4.5M (11%)
[PS3] 2.9M (13%)
[WIU] 21K (5%)

the numbers matter more than percentage.

21k is .... terribad.

Microsoft and Sony would be crazy not to go with this pricing model as an option (but they CAN'T make it the ONLY option).

I do think people don't fully understand how those pricing models work.
I can already take one out on a PS3; its called consumer credit.

These models are in place with mobiles because they want you using their other services for a few years.

This model is only a success if the PS4 basic online is priced as the Durango's likely will be.
Otherwise I don't see a benefit to the customer when looking at the pricing of the contract for a Durango.

Meanwhile the $99 shite people spout is factually false; and from a financial position, you want the consumer to be informed of the contracts pricing; otherwise theres a danger they'll stop paying. I think people not paying their full contract on a console is pretty large personally if they get into any financial troubles. So you don't want a bunch of idiots thinking their getting something for nothing; you end up with the lowest common denominator - who unfortunately are the most likely to struggle to make payments each month.

PC's do it well. Long as the console makers go in with the right mind set and not thinking about 'under cutting the competition' they should be fine.
However - its nothing like the phone market, and it is not selling a console for $99.

This should be more about early adoption rates than anything else, and the credit on top should be small. I don't feel bundling Live into the equation is a clever or good move as the price is then just too big. Also, I don't feel people use multiplayer enough that they'll happily take on debts for a number of years to pay for it.

Not buying it. There's no way these mega-corporations didn't have an actuary crunch these numbers. Activision/Ubisoft expected to quadruple their historic attach rates on late ports? Every single one of these AAA third party games was available elsewhere before Wii U even launched, and with the sole exception of Blops (which was only a week or so early), the publishers knew that before greenlighting the projects.

Given the historic attach rates listed above, Black Ops 2 should be 100-200k in NPD at minimum given the Wii U's current sales. It isn't. Using the Wii LTD vs the individual title sales is disingenuous, as attach rates do not stay linear with userbase. A 5-8% attach rate now for Wii U is reflective of a general lack of interest, not business as usual.

How much is accurate compared to resistive for gaming thanks to the stylus? I'm asking for sincere curiosity. :)

It's irrelevant. Even using my fingers, there is never a point where the screen does not register even the finest of movements. Have you tried using the Samsung Keyboard or Swype programs? Walking around and aiming in Dead Nation or Epic Citadel? Playing Fruit Ninja? It can do these basic gaming requirements, and it's multi-touch. It's not like Nintendo is putting out the equivalent of Metroid Prime Hunters for Wii U. The pad has dual analog for a reason. There is no tangible advantage to consumers for a resistive screen on a console.

Edit: re pricing models. MS is currently (in the new Halo 4 commercial) advertising the 360 as $99. On television. Today. The subscription model will be used for the next Xbox at least. It will probably be used to undercut the competition (including Nintendo) at launch.

But TTT2 is the best fighting game this gen? I don't care too much as U will never be my main system and I'll never buy multiplats on it. I just hope it stays alive long enough for MH4Ü :)

How much did COD3 sell on PS3 in four months?

There is a huge difference between CoD pre Modern Warfare and after it, pre it was just another shooter, not one of the biggest games around.

CoD was not a major seller before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, since that game it has been

Do tell us when you find out then.

I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

Edit: I'm not sure what relevance it has to the conversation, but if the numbers interest you then you should look into it.

Especially when the series is much more popular. CoD sales just show much nintendo failed to get ps3/360 owner to switch to wiiu so why would anyone expect that to improve?

Are you really trying to compare a cod released in 2006 to the 2012 versions?

For reference, ask a younger gamer and CoD fan what the first CoD game is. My little brother said "yea it's CoD1: Modern Warfare"

Wii U will still get Call of Duty. There are some franchises, no matter how bad they sell, will continue to come to Wii U because the company is striving for marketplace saturation. That's usually Call of Duty, Madden, cheap licensed games from places like Marvel or DC, WWE, etc. I think those companies care more about saying they reach everyone to build up their massive universe, so they'll continue buying them in the future.

Thing are so bottom of the barrel right now for Wii U, I don't think they can go any lower. There's probably a point where Ubi Soft moves onto PS4/720 main SKU's and franchises like Assassin's Creed will probably disappear next year or the year after.

Maybe something could surprise me, but it's seriously about at N64 levels of support right now.

As ZombiU's sales LTD still don't seem like much to brag about I don't think you're making the persuasive point you think you are.

No, that's not the same thing at all as using a credit card. And people in the US for the most part understand the pricing model, though there is still plenty of ignorance. The huge difference is that in the mobile space, the OEMs get their money upfront while the carriers don't break even on that 2-year contract for about ~14 months (highly variable depending on your plan of course). With the consoles, Microsoft and Sony will play both roles so own all of the risk AND all of the reward.

With these next systems, Sony and Microsoft WILL be heavily concentrating on services and they hope for these services to be as integral to the machines as voice and data plans are to the cellular space. When that's the case, this business model makes a lot of sense to offer as an alternative to making the customer pay $500+ upfront OR taking a big loss on each console.

I expect Microsoft to be the pricing innovator (having already tested it this generation in their stores) with Sony quickly playing catchup BUT eventually providing a greater value, just like they ended up doing this generation with PS+.

And you're wrong about this market. Some people will flake out of course (and take the associated credit hit), but most people will pay the $15/month over the two years and the payers will far, far outweigh the non-payers. Especially if non-payment means you can't get online at all. People find a way to pay for their entertainment.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
What was the highest attach rate for a Nintendo title? I wonder if nsmbu has beaten it, its pretty impressive. And then you hit the fiscal cliff before the next one, heh

Significantly bettter, LOL. Per creamsugar's leaks, Declassified had sold over 300K in the US as of the end of December.
So basically, looking at it from Activision's perspective, Declassified has been much more profitable than Wii U COD. I wonder will that result in another Vita outing and whether or not Wii U will be supported.

And Madden on the Vita has outsold the Wii U version.

Still don't understand how people think its a lock for Madden to show up on the Wii U this year. PS3/360 make up basically the entire revenue and considering Tiburon has get to work on next gen games that are probably coming out this year as well they're already being stretched thin. Honestly it doesn't make sense to waste resources developing versions that don't sell.

WWE I think would be pretty unlikely given the transition going from THQ to 2K.

No point in continuing this convo though, I see you don't really have much of a clue about certain things in the stock market. Best of luck in your analysis.

I agree that there's no point in continuing this convo. I disagree with the "clue about things in the stock market" since the basis of that remark would suggest that the topic was about that; and it wasn't. You're basically agreeing with me that Sony is in more trouble than Nintendo is. That was my main point. Now that we see eye to eye on this, we can drop it.

Shouldn't the big news be the terrible sales of dead space 3 and crysis 3? I always assumed the third game in a series has the biggest sales.

Also how the hell is any next gen game (other than like 5 of them) supposed to turn a profit?

It could be because the Madden on the Wii U wasn't even a new Madden game. You can't piss on customers and call it rain. They can see through that crap and they won't buy it. Plain and simple.

Because people here (and developers as well) like to ignore that fact. There are pretty obvious biases in the industry, and it has already told the tale that such biases can hurt a business's bottom line.

While the Wii U sales are abysmal, i do not think the white flag should be waved yet. Once a few more big games come out, perhaps a small price cut and some bundles it will make 2013 Xmas period very interesting from a sales perspective

Everyone's eyes will be on PS4 and 720 obviously with some interest into seeing how Wii U performers, but to me i am equally as interested in seeing how 360 and PS3 do, how much will they decline in sales and what legs will the 2 consoles have in 2014 and beyond. Will PS3 and 360 follow each other, hand in hand, into death and irrelevancy or will one of the them have a near PS2 esque life span?

Should be interesting

Crysis sells primarily on PC.

605k isn't terrible.

Yep it's tanking hard. At what point do we start calling it a flop.

I guess we'll have to wait until E3 to see what Nintendo's plans are for this thing. It's flopping hard in terms of sales, and there simply aren't many good games for it. Wii U's future looks incredibly bleak.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

This could possibly be the biggest evidence of how much Wii was a mass hysteria phenomenon: everything was selling...EVERYTHING.

When will Nintendo learn this lesson?

Nintendo really isn't notorious for this. One of the main complaints most people I know have with Nintendo is their lack of marketing. However, Nintendo is a pretty docile company. They aren't like Sony or Microsoft who attempt to over-hype their products, not deliver on them, and then try to convince you that they sold you gold.

Oh it's correct all right. I've independently verified Creamsugar's leaks regarding the top Wii U games...it's all legit.

Who actually cares about marketing? What world do you live in where gamers care more about marketing than content? Also, it could be argued that your last sentence is EXACTLY what Reggie's been doing for the past 7 years, especially if you grew up a Nintendo fan like me and felt mostly abandoned by Nintendo over the past 7 years.

Jeez there's a lot of good games on this list that I forgot existed. The Wii U list 4 months out is depressing by comparison. Only 4 third party games have sales over 100k (3 of them just got over the 100k mark in Feb) with the highest (Zombi U) not even past 200k.
