37" Westinghouse LVM-37W1 (native res 1920 x 1080 -> 1080p , 12ms response time, 600:1)

Link

37" BenQ DV3750 (1920x 1080 -> 1080p, 12ms response time, 800:1)

Link

Might as well go 1080p and get ready for PS3 and use it as a decent computer monitor as well

Samsung DLP has a bad reputation for lots of lag from 480i/480p inputs and some lag from 720p inputs. Has this changed lately?

There is absolutely no lag when doing 480p and 720p if you turn that annoying DNIe off.

With 480i, you're on your own. :lol

slightly OT, but what happens if you feed one of these TVs a full 1080p frame at 60 Hz? Can the HDMI cable even carry that much bandwidth? Can the TV properly display it (the only 1080p display formats in the ATSC table 3 are 1080p 24/30)? Anyone have a clue?

yeah i have checked that out in store. its nice enough. aesthetically pleasing, sharp picture quality. variety of inputs.
i was gonna buy the 23 inch model but later decided to go with a CRT instead.

Slight Correction:

30" Hi-Scan® FD Trinitron® WEGA® TV KV-30HS420 ($899 @ SonyStyle.com)
30" Widescreen FD Trinitron® WEGA® HDTV KD-30XS955 ($1,199 @ SonyStyle.com)

Both TV's are 16:9 Aspect Ratio
Both accept a true 720p signal via the HDMI inputs.
However, they both upconvert that 720p signal to 1080i.
As well, the 480i signals can be upconverted to 960i.
They also accept and display 480p.

While correct that neither TV can output 720p they still offer an HD quality image by accepting a 720p/1080i source.

Not only does the Sony Trinitron technology/tubes own every other tube TV on the market, the true 16:9 aspect ration, 3:2 Pulldown Correction, 720p capable HDMI inputs, super fine pitch screen, service mode menu adjustments, and incredible color saturation make these two TV's a perfect choice for any gamer.

Many people that swear the 420/510's are the best TV's for under $1,000, period.
I'd have to agree.

But you guys know me by now.
IMO Sony's TV sets are the only TV sets anyone should ever buy, sell, use, worship, period.

The only CRT you can buy that does 720p is desktop CRT monitors.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've got a Sony 34XBR960 and it appears to do 480p, 720p and 1080i just fine?

In the likes with thread participation- I've got to say that it isn't exactly cheap or light, but it's got a fantastic picture and there's nothing quite like playing SMB and IIDX at the same time. ;)

Any idea if this one is any good? Any Euro Gaffers with this one? Would it be good one for X360 gaming? :)

DiBOSS LT-32HLF

Specs:
Resolution: 1366x768 (WXGA).
Brightness: 450cd/m2
Contrast 1000:1
Response time: 16ms
Inputs: 15-pin VGA-, RCA-, DVI- and two SCART-inputs + RF-connector

DiBOSS is partly owned by LG and uses Samsung screens. That model is one the cheapest 32" set you can get here in Finland. At the moment its selling at ~1190 euros. Probably around christmas when X360 comes it will be closer to 1000 euros.

That's the one I'm gonna get. The 32" one. I've seen Test Drive running on the 26" one at the Atari booth and image looked PERFECT to me.

Yeah, that looks awesome. Thanks for the tip. Hope it gets released in Europe soon.

Yeah, me too. The previous version has only just come out here so I doubt we'll see it for a year or so :(

Question: At what response time (in ms) will there no longer be a difference between LCD and CRT as far as ghosting goes? I absolutely loathe ghosting.

This is 50 inch Sony TV I'm planning to get. Black levels are supposed to be much improved

Should be about 2200 at most stores. Can't go CRT because it's just too small

Jeez...skip it!!! That is just far too high for an LCD screen for any kind of serious viewing. For another £100 you can get the amazing Samsung LE26R41 from Empire Direct

Yep I have a 34XBR960 also and it plays Amped 2, and SC2 in 720p.

Even labels it as 720p in the details label when it is running it.

it's the sure-fire HDTV thread derailment tool.

Back to the 1080p questions, does HDMI being limited to 1080p/30 mean that you're never going to see a 1080p game at 60 fps in the coming generation? That'll sure rile the fanboys up.

If the sparks are pretty enough, framerate doesn't matter.

Even if that's true, I'd guess developers shooting for 60fps games would just stick to 720p (like most developers probably will be doing next-gen).

Yeah, this is why I'm going with a 720P set. Every game will be 720P. Also, if someone does want to buy Nintendo Revolution, Nintendo have stated all Revolution titles will be 480P so those should scale nicely on 720P sets. Now Nintendo just needs to mandate all Revolution titles be in 16:9 as well. :D

Ill probably be called a cheapskate but I cant believe how much HDTVs still cost. Anyone have an idea when/if the mass HDTV price drop is going to happen? Like into that $600-$700 for a "27 TV range of sanity?

Ill probably be called a cheapskate but I cant believe how much HDTVs still cost.

To put it in perspective, even big screen HDTVs today cost less than standard def rear projection sets from 7 years ago.

Of course, giant TVs have always been big ticket items.

Ditto. In fact, I'm dumping my 4-year-old 1080i set for a 720p set. Frankly, I think the best strategy for 2005 is to buy a 720p set today save the difference to upgrade to a 1080p set four or five years from now. 1080p sets in 2010 will blow away this years sets and cost substantially less.

They already are, 26" CRTs have been in that price range for a pretty long time. Just stop looking at things like LCDs.

Of course none of those 'high def' sets can resolve a full 1920x1080i or 1280x720p image.

There's at least one new Samsung that can accept 60hz 1920x1080p over VGA.
