SEASON PREMIERE:
Wednesday October 9th 10p [only on FX]

American Horror Story is a horror-drama series created and produced by Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) and Brad Falchuk. The series has been referred to as an "anthology" series
as every series features different characters, settings and story lines while utilizing the same actors who may return for different roles. From the beginning, Murphy and Falchuk had
planned for the series to be a different story each season - allowing for actors to sign on without having to commit to multiple year runs and allowing the show to remain fresh and
varied. As such, each story is conceived and penned at the beginning of the production cycle from beginning to end.

Coven is the third season of American Horror Story. It will span multiple years - ranging from the 1830s right through to the present day. It's main focus is surrounding the Salem With Trials
and their resultant conflict with the Voodoo of the New Orleans. The writers plan to explore themes of witches, witch hunts, incest, minorities, slavery, and the bond between mother and
daughter.

The stories concerning the Harmon family and their haunted house (from Season 1), as well as Sister Jude's sanitarium (from Season 2) are completely unrelated to Coven.

You do not need to watch the first or second season to understand this one - each season of American Horror Story is independent of one another

The greatest thing about American Horror Story is that every season is self contained. The actors are the same - but the characters and stories change each year.
Relive some of the past moments of the franchise and watch either the first season - Murder House, or the second - Asylum. Or if you've never watched them before, now's the perfect time to jump in.
Or leave them until after Coven - they are unrelated, after all.

Murder House is the first season of American Horror Story. Taking place in 2011, it is centered around themes of infidelity. It follows the Harmon family (Ben, Vivien and daughter Violet), who move from Boston to Los Angeles following Vivien's stillbirth.
Eventually purchasing a house for a price much cheaper than it's worth, the family unknowingly moves into a haunted house with a storied past dating all the way back to the 20s. Ben and Vivien are trying to
rekindle their relationship, Violet develops depression and finds solace in one of Ben's psychiatric patients, Tate Langdon, whom Ben sees in his house due to the family financial troubles.

Moira, a maid, services the house on a regular occasion but also harbours a secret and is connected to the house more than you would imagine. Constance, the Harmon's creepy neighbour, constantly visits the
house offering up tidbits of advice to the family, though there is more to her than meets the eye. To make matters worse, Larry, a disfigured man, continues to stalk Ben and warns him of the dangers of that house,
and what it does to people.

  • Dylan McDermott plays Dr. Ben Harmon - a psychiatrist married to Vivien Harmon and father of Violet Harmon.
  • Connie Britton plays Vivien Harmon - A cellist who had a stillbirth which subsequently made her withdraw from her husband.
  • Taissa Farmigia plays Violet Harmon - The only child in the Harmon family and a social outcast. She self-harms regularly.
  • Jessica Lange plays Constance - Next door neighbour and former resident of the house the Harmons move into, she moved to Los Angeles to become a star while young, but that never took off.
  • Evan Peters plays Tate Langdon - A troubled youth who Ben treats as a patient, he takes a liking to Violet and has a storied past.
  • Denis O'Hare plays Larry Harvey - A former owner of the house the Harmons have bought, and incredibly disfigured. Imprisoned for killing his family, he claims he was let out as he has a terminal illness.
  • Frances Conroy plays Moira - A maid who has serviced the house for all the families who inhabit it, she has a few tricks up her sleeves and is incredibly protective of the families she works for.
Murder House features guest appearances from Kate Mara, Lily Rabe, Matt Ross, Jamie Brewer, Zachary Quinto and Mena Suvari.

Jessica Lange's performance as Constance one her both the Emmy and Golden Globe for Supporting Actress amidst it's numerous nominations.

Asylum follows the patients, doctors and nuns who occupy the Briarcliff Mental Institution in 1964 but is intercut with scenes from the present day. Sister Jude and Sister Mary Eunice maintain the institution that was built and founded by Monsignor Timothy Howard to treat and house the criminally insane. Psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Thredson and scientist Dr. Arthur Arden are both medical staff who treat the patients within the facility. The patients, many of whom claim to be unjustly instituionalised, are a dynamic and eclectic bunch. Lana Winters was thrown into Briarcliff for being a lesbian when Sister Jude finds out she is investigating the institution. Kit Walker has been accused of murdering his wife and several other women - essentially accused of being mythological killer "Bloody Face". Grace Bertrand is a french woman alleged to have cut up her entire family in a fit of rage one night.

  • Jessica Lange plays Sister Jude - a sadistic nun in charge of administration and discipline at Briarcliff.
  • Lily Rabe plays Sister Mary Eunice - Sister Jude's right hand, Sister Eunice is appears "dense" but there is more to her than meets the eye.
  • James Cromwell plays Dr. Arthur Arden - A scientist with rumoured ties to Nazi germany, Arden is alleged to have created many diabolical experiments in Briarcliff's basements.
  • Sarah Paulson plays Lana Winters - An unjustly imprisoned lesbian journalist who will stop at nothing to expose the secrets of Briarcliff.
  • Evan Peters plays Kit Walker - A greaser accused of murdering his wife and constantly punished by Jude. He claims something "not human" was responsible for his wife's death.
  • Zachary Quinto plays Dr. Oliver Thredson - A psychiatrist at Briarcliff whose forward-thinking methods of practice constantly clash with Sister Jude's management style.
  • Lizzie Brocheré plays Grace Bertrand - A quiet and observant patient at Briarcliff with secrets of her own, she takes an interest in Kit and they become close friends.
  • Joseph Fiennes plays Monsignor Timothy Howard - Ranking over Sister Jude in authority, the monsignor is alleged to be rather nefarious
Asylum features guest appearances from Fredric Lehne, Chloe Sevigny, Clea Duvall, Dylan McDermott, Frances Conroy, Adam Levine, Mark Conseulos, Mark Margolis, Ian McShane and Franka Potente.

Lange, Cromwell, Quinto and Paulson were all nominated for Emmys for their roles as Jude, Arthur, Thredson and Winters respectively. However, only James Cromwell took home the best supporting actor award. Asylum has been well regarded and well nominated

This show is the craziest, most unhinged production on TV.

Cannot get enough. Asylum had everything, and should have been an utter trainwreck, but it was one of the freshest, most inspired seasons of television a fellow can view.

Bring on Coven.

I think I might as well drop these here - these are extended synopses for the first two episodes. I've highlighted them since they go into a little bit of detail.

EPISODE 1 - BITCHCRAFT
1834. New Orleans. The evil and perverse Madame LaLaurie, who bathes in the blood of others in an attempt to stay young, punishes a servant for having been seduced by her daughter Pauline by transforming him into a beast... not by magic, but by far more gruesome means.

Today. Orlando, Florida. Teenaged Zoe Benson, upon losing her virginity, learns in a terribly horrific way that she's a witch. It runs in her family, who descended from the witches at Salem, but only manifests in some of her family, not all of it. None of the real witches at Salem were burned; they escaped suspicion and fled to New Orleans. Zoe is forcibly sent to a witches' boarding school there, Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, never to see her mother again. There, after a terrifying ordeal, she meets her new classmates: spoiled brat teenage movie star Madison Montgomery, who can move objects with her mind; the feisty Queenie, a human voodoo doll, who can inflict her wounds on the person who gave them to her; and Nan, who has Down's Syndrome... and is clairvoyant. Zoe also meets the Head Mistress, Cordelia Foxx, and mute, sullen butler Spalding. In its heyday, the school had over sixty students, but today witches are a dying breed. Zoe learns that most witches learn a few spells, but in each generation there is a "Supreme," who embodies countless magical "gifts" – perhaps all of them. But Cordelia also warns Zoe that their kind are still under threat of being persecuted and burned alive... like young Misty Day, who terrified the folks at her church when she discovered she could raise the dead.

We next meet Fiona, a wealthy witch obsessed with eternal youth, and frustrated that her attempts to obtain it – both scientific and magical – continually end in failure. She is Cordelia's mother, and they have a fraught history. While Cordelia wants to teach the girls to live peacefully, Fiona – who is the Supreme – wants to teach them to make the world fear them. Meanwhile, Madison takes Zoe to a frat party, where Zoe meets the sweet, grounded Kyle, but the other frat boys are not so kind – and will regret the horror they visit upon Madison. Later, Fiona takes the girls to visit the home of the legendary Madame LaLaurie, who, we learn, was killed by the Voodoo Queen as revenge for her murder of her lover... and Nan sees ominous portents of the future.

EPISODE 2 - BOY PARTS
Death has failed to claim more than one person... including Madame LaLaurie, whose secrets Fiona is determined to ferret out. The next day, at Morning Gathering, Queenie tells the story of how she first discovered her powers and ancestry, and ended up at the Academy. The Gathering is interrupted by a pair of detectives, Sanchez and Stiles, who want to talk to Madison and Zoe about what happened at the frat party.

Fiona makes sure their investigation ends immediately... leaving the girls utterly terrified of her. Later, Madison decides to pay Zoe back for her help. But when Madison decides to play Dr. Frankenstein and build Zoe the "perfect boyfriend," things go gruesomely wrong.

Meanwhile, Cordelia and Hank meet with a fertility doctor, but after a year of treatments there's still no progress. Hank exhorts her to use her magic instead; Cordelia is reluctant, but ultimately assents to the black ceremony, despite her misgivings. Back at the Academy, LaLaurie tells the story of how she came to be immortal – cursed and buried alive by Marie Laveau.

As Fiona confronts the still-living Marie, risking ending the ages-old truce between the witches and the voodoo priestesses, LaLaurie makes her escape... though after 180 years in a coffin, she is unprepared for the modern world.

And Zoe and her new "boyfriend" find themselves with a new and somewhat unsettling ally.

Bitchcraft, lol. Good one, Ryan Murphy.

Good OP. I don't know if I can handle this show, but I'll certainly will try this season.

Can't wait, but I really do hope they don't start throwing in every single trope they can think of as they did with Asylum.

This premise has the potential to be the most interesting they've come up and also one of the scariest if they play it right. Some of the earlier episodes in Asylum had fantastic tension and atmosphere, more of that please.

Hope this season is a lot better than the mess that was season 2.

The premiere was last night, here's some impressions from people. I've removed lines that add nothing but could be considered spoilery.

The show revolves around a school for witches in New Orleans run by Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), but everything is shaken up when Supreme witch Fiona (Jessica Lange) rolls into town. Not only do Cordelia and Fiona have a contentious mother-daughter relationship, but Fiona is ready to take over Cordelia's "Hogwarts."

Kathy Bates is portraying real-life New Orleans aristocrat Delphine LaLaurie and the depiction on the show is just as scary and violent about what we've read of Madame LaLaurie in real life. As is always the case with "AHS," this is not for the squeamish.

Taissa Farmiga rolls into town as Zoe Benson, a girl who didn't know she was a witch until an unfortunate accident with her boyfriend clued her family into her carrying their "genetic disorder." She goes about using her power as an ... interesting way to exact revenge upon some disgusting college boys.

The other students at the witch academy are played by Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and Jamie Brewer and they should prove to be a lot of fun, especially Brewer's Nan -- if we could choose one power to have, it'd be hers.

The premiere episode only has smaller bits with Denis O'Hare, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy and Evan Peters, so we're very interested to find out just how much of a role they'll play in Season 3, since we've enjoyed them so much in the past seasons.

However, Lange is once again the star of the show -- much more Constance Langdon than Sister Jude, which is the way we prefer her, honestly.

How much do we love the first episode of American Horror Story: Coven?

So much that we've spent the morning burning all our non-black clothing to embrace the look of witch-bitch chic. Suffice to say, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett are jaw-droppingly incredible in the third season of FX's horror anthology—which is scary and funny as hell—and is looking to be the best one yet.

Creator Ryan Murphy screened the first episode to a group of reporters Thursday, and revealed that, given the show's anthology (one season and done) storyline format, he's already having casual discussions with FX President John Landgraf about continuing Coven somehow beyond this season.

"[Coven] is my favorite season that we've done so far," Murphy told us, "Every season, I get very sad when I say goodbye to and we tear down those sets. But John Landgraf, to be quite clear, and I have always spoke about that this is a show that's sort of right to spin things off. To do something different. So we are talking about it. Because I mean, I love it. I love this season, I love the cast, and I love what it's about. I love that set more than life itself... I mean, I already know what next season is and it's not witches but maybe something will happen. We're talking. It has to get on the air first, I think."

Coven, which is all about witches (duh), flawlessly interweaves the younger generation (Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sibide and the triumphant return of Taissa Farmiga), who are all young witches at a New Orleans boarding house, with the older generation (Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett), who are running the show.

The rivalries are fierce, and the plot twists will make you cry out for your mama, but it's the humor that sets Coven apart from AHS' prior seasons. "Last year was so dark and grim and hard," Murphy admits. "And I loved it. But this year was designed to be scary but more, I think, fun. I heard a lot last year, ‘I love it but it's hard to sit through.' So I wanted this year to be easier to sit through. A little more light."

But still terrifying, don't you worry. It's actually Kathy Bates' character who will suck the breath right out of you: She plays an 18thCentury New Orleans woman, Madame Delphine LaLaurie, who actually existed and did all the horrific (as in, they are still burned onto my retinas) acts featured in the first five minutes of the episode.

Murphy reveals he approached Kathy for Coven after her "good friend" Jessica mentioned she has never missed an episode of AHS. Murphy recalls that he told Kathy, ‘I don't know if you've ever want to do a character that's eight times worse than your character on Misery, but I have the perfect part for you. She called me back in 45 minutes and said yes."

And fans who loved Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga together in season one
have so much to celebrate, they better break out a Dixie band. They are back into a romantic storyline for season three.

"I loved them together," Murphy says of reuniting Taissa and Evan on Coven. "I thought they had really good chemistry. I thought that I wanted to write something for them, a love story. But I wanted it to be different. So after Jessica and Sarah, Taissa is the one I called in first. She liked it. She loves working with Evan. Evan loves working with her. It's odd that Evan's girlfriend [Emma Roberts] is also on the show, but I've made that work. They're comfortable, they already have a short hand, and I think the fans like that that season-one love story is reincarnated in some weird way."

Strange, seductive, horrifying and hilarious. We can hardly wait for episode two. And if the subsequent episodes hold up to the first, put our vote infor that Coven spinoff!

On top of this Huffington Post interviewed Ryan about the show too. It's quite heavy on the spoilers so I would read it carefully (or maybe not at all). But that being said I don't think Ryan Murphy would reveal anything he doesn't want us to know watching. But it's interesting to hear his process.

It does confirm two "monsters" that will be in the show. You could probably guess one of them. The other is a historical figure who was apparently a real life occurence in New Orleans.

But he also mentioned he wants to do the reveal for Season 4 at the end of Coven. So we'll get a visual marker to give us an idea of what we're getting, plus a title. Pretty happy about that approach.

And here are photos from the premiere:

I've decided to go with a ghetto voodoo headwrap, might try to re-edit it soon.

More shots from the premiere.

While looking for these I also found this article. About Jessica Lange's future with the series.

http://www.ibtimes.com/american-hor...-only-has-one-more-season-after-coven-1413590

The actress said she has enjoyed being on the show, USA Today quoted her on Monday. "They've been great parts, and they've allowed me to really do things I've never done before. It's been a real treat for me." When asked about her future on the show, she said she had a contract for one more season of the Ryan Murphy show and added, "Then I don't know what will happen." But she did say that season 4 will be “really exciting.”

I'm really happy that she's returning for a fourth season - I remember her saying how drained she was after filming Asylum and that she didn't know how much longer she could do it for. But I just don't know if I could imagine the show without her, quite frankly :(

One more season, this time sci-fi horror. Make Lange some badass captain of a ship.

Do it, Murphy.

So he's saying that he wants to make a spin off of Coven? What? That would mean that season 4 would have to have an entirely new cast, unless he's planning on having everyone pull double duty on two series at once. Also, doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of making the show an anthology in the first place?

But he also mentioned he wants to do the reveal for Season 4 at the end of Coven. So we'll get a visual marker to give us an idea of what we're getting, plus a title. Pretty happy about that approach.

Me too. Getting people hyped early is a smart move.
