I love the design, but is it.......like an actual game or one of those visual novel things? That was a lot going on in the trailer and very little gameplay (unless all that is how you actually play the game or something)

I'm open to anything really, but not 59.99 open to anything lol

It's a visual novel in the long running Science Adventures series, so the focus is on the plot, characters and exploring all possible narrative outcomes/endings. It's very light on gameplay elements, so if you'd like to get into this genre I recommend starting with something like the AI Somnium Files series as there's more interactivity.
