Can someone help me figure out how to make Doom run better on my PC?

I've seen the Doom thread but a lot of that goes over my head. I took an unintentional break from serious PC gaming for about 2-3 years, so I don't know what parts I should upgrade or not. Doom is running too slow for me and I'd like to fix that.

Because I don't know what to look for, I was hoping folks could tell me.

Can't tell from that because no GPU is shown.

What I can see is
CPU - i5 4570 (3.2Ghz)
8GB Ram

which should be more than sufficient provided you have a decent GPU to go with them.

We need to know your graphics card.

Judging by your system memory, it sounds like it's a dedicated GPU, but it could be a slow one.

Your processor seems to be fine, as well as ram. Your graphics card isn't listed there, do you know which one you have installed? That'll probably be the deciding factor on performance here

What video card do you have? That's going to make the difference. You have a fairly modern processor and adequate amounts of RAM.

CPU is more than fine, probably will not be the bottleneck.

8GB more RAM is cheap as shit, more games are going over that 8GB mark so you may want to invest in that going forward, not sure if DOOM is one of them. But without GPU specs, can't really help you right now.

At 1080p ultra settings it should run badly (around 30fps)
I'd lower settings and try that way. Also, update your drivers if you haven't, etc (GPU drivers)

You need to get more RAM. Doom takes up to 5GB alone while it's running on my PC.

16GB RAM minimum these days.

So I should probably invest in more RAM? Also as for a graphics card, what should I look at? I'd like to run Doom at 60fps or at least as fast as it was on the PS4 (though I think it's 30 fps there, it didn't have slowdown and looked good enough.)

Turn everything down to Medium in the graphics options
Turn the resolution scaling to 80%
Finally, VSYNC should be set to Adaptive and not on or off

Your framerate should be 100x better after that.

Your CPU is fine for the moment, if you have some cash to spare I'd grab a new graphics card personally. You can get one that is easily 3-4x as powerful.

Doom is 60fps on PS4. If you're willing to spend $400-500 grab a GTX 1070. Crazy performance on that card.

Go for a 1070 if you can. 8GB RAM is fine, but having 16GB doesn't hurt. You need a GPU upgrade that's all.

8GB is fine. The more memory you have the more will be "used" by Windows. Most games still run fine on 4GB RAM, even if they "require" 6-8GB. CoD being the exception for whatever reason.

Yeah 16GB wouldn't hurt. I should check and see what kind of RAM I have, but do you have any recommendations?

I haven't done any of this I think. I don't know what EMM386 is.

How does Doom run on your PC and at what graphical settings?

Your CPU is fine, and it seems that you have a 7800 series GPU, I'm not sure if it's a 7870 or 7850 though.

Judging by your specs in most games you're probably going to be GPU-bound instead of CPU limited.

Also, if you're looking for new ram I highly advise going with memory speeds of a minimum of 1866MHz-2133MHz and above, DDR3 ram has gotten alot cheaper over the years.

8GB is okay but 12GB and above is probably your best bet for the future.

As much as I enjoyed these old-timey PC config jokes we shouldn't confuse the OP with them :) A 7870 should be powerful enough to run Doom at slightly better than PS4 settings, unless there is a driver issue I'm not aware of. What kind of graphics settings are you using ingame? The advice about turning everything to medium and using adaptive vsync was solid.

Thank you for being considerate. The reason I made this thread is because I'm not in the most stable state and I didn't feel like going through the Doom config thread and stressing myself out.

I did but for some reason the framerate was still sub 30.

Don't worry, I think that making this thread wasn't a bad idea, since now you also have an idea about what you may need to upgrade in the future.
And turning down presets is always a finicky thing, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That's why I always recommend going setting by setting instead of an all inclusive thing.
Glad to see that you made it work well :) it's a really good game.
