I've been saying this for years, but you Detroit mouth-breathers refuse to listen. Well, he's at it again!

NHL veteran Chris Chelios, a member of the scandal-scarred 1998 U.S. Olympic hockey team, offered a lame excuse after being ejected from a popular Bellagio restaurant Saturday.

The Detroit Red Wings star was escorted out of FIX after a plate-smashing binge while dining with Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer, tennis star Jennifer Capriati, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alan Thicke and NHL colleagues Sergei Federov, Luc Robitaille and Marty McSorley. A FIX publicist said Chelios "explained to management that it was OK because he was Greek, but it didn't fly." Chelios was referring to a spontaneous Greek tradition of plate breaking.

After cooler heads prevailed, Chelios was allowed to return to rejoin his pals, who were in town for Bruckheimer's annual Bad Boys of Hockey weekend outing.

Chelios was captain of the U.S. Olympic team that came under heavy criticism when their Olympic Village rooms were damaged after a stunning quarterfinal loss at Nagano, Japan. The team's coach, Ron Wilson, called for the players responsible to come forward and acknowledge their "deplorable act."

Oh, and if that wasn't enough...

More proof that NHL veteran Chris Chelios has the IQ of a hockey puck. On top of his boorish behavior at the Bellagio over the weekend, when he was thrown out of FIX for breaking dinner plates, comes this story:

Afternoon deejay Rik McNeil of Clear Channel's KOOL-FM, 93.1 said he was dining with Chelios and Los Angeles deejay icon Rick Dees at Morton's of Chicago here back in 2000.

"Chelios had been a guest on the Dees' program, and was dining with us. At some time during the evening, he went to the lobster tank and brought one of the poor little crustaceans to our table, and proceeded to torment it, smearing butter on it, and tapping its shell with his butter knife.

Chelios' dining companions sat there stunned when a waiter came to the table and the hockey tough-guy handed over the lobster, saying, "Would you get this thing out of here?"

"It was the most juvenile thing I've ever seen, and as you can imagine, I see a lot in radio," McNeil said. A couple days later, Dees berated Chelios for being a "complete idiot and moron" on his syndicated show.
Welcome to what everyone else in hockey has known for years, Mr. Dees!

God I hope Chelios plays one more year. Seeing him make a whole new batch of mediocre-skating wingers look like Guy Lafleur as they cut around him like a goddamn pylon would warm my heart. The simple fact he'll actually get meaningfull minutes for Team USA this fall should be worth an extra half goal to every opponent.

Despite being a fucking tool, I will say again that one game against the Jets in about 92 Chelios was as utterly dominant as I've ever seen a hockey player. I've seen other guys like Gretzky, Teemu, Hasek and Coffey just rule a full 60 minutes but Chelios had probably the single best game I've ever seen in person.

And for being a jackass... god has sentenced him to be the only man uglier than Mike Ricci.

Welcome to the last decennia. The Habs understood that a long time ago and traded his ass. Bad hockey move but great PR move.
