So I was reading the other day about these cameras, and I must admit I'm impressed, mainly by the Colorsplash, the Holga and the Smena Symbol. So I figured since the GA forums have a massive cross section of folks who have various hobbies, one or two of ya'll might have messed around with these things and can give me an idea if it's a fun thing to take up as a hobby.

For those like me who hadn't heard of any of this before yesterday, here's some pics.

The Colorsplash, which really does nothing more than but a colored filter over the flash:

And some pics:

And the Holga, which apparently produces some really cool dream-like pictures:

Now of course, these could all be pictures with MASSIVE Photoshop touchups...or for that matter something I could easily do with my digital camera's shots in PS if I bothered to buy a damned book and put the time into it.

But that's why I turn to you, the OT.

A last chance at life bump for this thread.

Or if a nice mod could change the subject line to include "Deals with Photography" or something, I'd be grateful.

I had no idea what "lomography" was, but I was hoping it might be porn-related so I clicked your thread. Imagine my (short-lived) disappointment. :|

Now, Bish, do you think I'd be that dumb to post porn stuff here? I'm a good boy.

And thanks for the change.

Well that's....crap. I can hold lots of different coloured filters over a normal camera's flash, no doubt for a fraction of the price.

also you could do a lot of post processing (for digital photographers) and achieve the same results or results to your liking...what is the point of this?

Just that, to find out if I could probably have the same effects with some Photoshop or what not, before I actually went and spent some hard earned cash on the camera. I could still see myself plunking down the cash for the Holga, something about it intrigues me.

The thought about colored fiters over a flash also hit me like a ton of bricks today too.

If I were to get a camera, it would be an old school Hasselblad.

There is something about lookin down (yes, down) a viewfinder that fills your whole field of vision. So much better than looking thru a pinhole viewfinder.

Plus there is some amount of prestige in owning the same model camera that the apollo astronauts used.

hasselblads are yummy.

lomos and holgas are just cameras with cheapass lenses that provide undesired effects that turn out cool sometimes. youre better off just doing some shite in photoshop.

The advantage/appeal of a camera like a Lomo or Holga is that it can do these effects directly, without a PC, to spice up an otherwise ordinary shot. i'm not really big on them myself, but they're really popular. i'm barely an amateur digital photographer but if i wanted, i could imitate a lot of the effects in Photoshop, but getting the same "organic" look would be harder in a digital medium.

i'd recommend viewing some tutorial sites like www.tutorialized.com for various effects in Photoshop (or whatever graphics program you're using) to see what can be done. Personally, i'd much rather have a regular camera and just add those effects later, but to each their own.

The cool thing about these things is that there is a little loss of control that you don't get with digital editing. With digital you control every aspect of the final piece while with these (sometimes poorly made) devices there is still a little bit of surprise, a little bit of magic when you see what develops.

for instance here are some pictures I took with a camera that shoots four exposures onto one negative in the span of one second. The camera is poorly made so some of the stuff gets over exposed/"destroyed" for interesting results.

edit:damn hang on. my free host decided to change their direct linking policy so the pics wont show.
