Interesting, but it seems like a more adanced variation on some of the old tricks on the C64's VIC chip to do stuff like opening borders, border sprites, and especially stuff like FLD, FPP etc.

Check out this page, specifically the VICII hardware tricks section for some of the black magic that was possible,

To be honest, we used way more "blast Processing" in Overdrive 2, but i forgive them as they used a lot of footage from that in their MegaSG review =)
