But everyone says it looks great on their 4K TV? Next-gen even?Guess 4K TV purchases for this gen were a waste. 1080p4eva.
Why are 4K TVs a waste when you find out how developers used technology to get it to that resolution?

The game is absolutely running 1080p base resolution:
The end result is a presentation that looks better than the native 1080p pixel counts that tend to emerge from untreated geometry
You still needs a 4k TV to get the best visuals from this game.Guess 4K TV purchases for this gen were a waste. 1080p4eva.

Yes, and Xbox Series X is a 756p 30fps machine?
Do you realize how is so unfair judge a hardware by one specific game?
Returnal was made on "generic" UE4. Destruction Allstars, Sackboy, Gears 5, all these games are made in this engine, and doesn't hit perfect native 4k resolution.
you
I mean, there's MLB the Show...Well they need that because after the reviews the salty is real because they don't have anything to look or play in the near future.

If this is what a Housemarque game looks on PS5, brains will probably melt when we see a Naughty Dog title
hope naughty dog can do better
Anyone familiar with Housemarque wouldn't be surprised by this at all. Basically particles are their game.Anyway, excellent particle rendering! I can't really think of a game off the top of my head that has this kind of particle rendering. Props.
There is no doubt that prioritizing frame rate above resolution is the right move this gen. They made the right choice. That's the point of Nvidia DLSS too. To look better than native counterpart
I just took it for granted we were gonna have 4K native (or close to it) on PS5 with variable fps. 1080p is not even close. I’m sure it looks great with all the magic tricks used but cold hard numbers are there and it’s not impressive. But everyone says it looks great on their 4K TV? Next-gen even?

Dont be dumb

I'd prefer this game in native 4k, but no console is going to be able to do that. I doubt even a 3090 would be able to.But I guess some would prefer a drab 4K image with nothing going on which they can get in abundance with all the B tier filler games.
They are gonna compromise both. It's gonna be fun watching the hype for 'true 4K' go away from certain posters are we start getting real next gen games. Neither console is going to push next-gen gaming at 4K / 60FPS with full effects. One of those things will be compromised and everyone better hope its resolution over the others.
I still don't have a tv with VRRI don't care if this is 1080p. I rather have a high framerate and effects making the game vibrant and play very well. As long as the reconstruction delivers a clean image who cares. 1440p to native 4k is hardly noticable in gameplay even when I am like 4 inches removed from my screen (CX 55 inch). Just forget about native 4k, and focus on framerate, effects and good controls.
Sony really needs to come through with this VRR thing. RE8 would absolutely benefit from it in RT mode.
Yeap. I said this like extremely early on when the games started to pour in. They simply don't have the GPU bandwidth to push higher levels (especially with RT) and most optimizations will be removing this bandwidth barrier with lowering the render framebuffers down and upscaling them to display. It's gonna be fun watching the hype for 'true 4K' go away from certain posters are we start getting real next gen games. Creating 2 screens in real time takes more power.
Nothing in this game is using volume rendering. Everything is screenspace. But the particles look incredible though. Not with what Returnal is throwing around on screen with volumetrics, fog, particles and effects.
Even with one screen game is nothing to bragging about honestly. :/

There are other games (Marvel Avengers and Control) that are pushing particles like this. Let's not ignore the multiplats. What is nice about this and Ratchet is sheer amount of stuff going on screen, this gen games are getting "busier" in gameplay, not just the odd explosion that tanks framerate.
hope naughty dog can do better
ND is gonna make returnal look like a 2d indie game

The key for this console generation would be developing better and better upscaling and reconstruction technologies that scale up from a base 1080p-1440p range.Yeap. Follow your own adviceAn insightful post as always…
why even bother?
I don’t stalk poster, not worth my time.Follow your own advice
I still don't have a tv with VRR
This isn't CB.DLSS isn't in the same league, genre, or century as CB. They should never be compared. One is last gen, one is next gen. Sure a Ford Pinto and a Tesla will get you from point A to B (and hopefully back), but they are completely different leagues, just like DLSS.
If you stop shitposting i guarantee you no one will bother.I don’t stalk poster, not worth my time.

Well, not just this console generation either, even if the next generation have GPUs that are 5x faster in normal rasterisation (likely way more in RT) and have bandwidth in excess of 1TB/s, reconstruction and upscaling would still be of immense value.
Yes but most tv's don't support it.I do and its kinda painful my Series S does it and more powerful PS5 don't. I don't get the problem either, its supposed to be supported from hardware level.
To be fair if this was an XSX title running at those specs certain people would be jumping all over it on this forum...Xbox influencers already running with this on Twitter.
I think Controls Performance/RT mode is a good summary about what to expect in general when it comes to res/performance this gen in consoles. There are other games (Marvel Avengers and Control) that are pushing particles like this. Let's not ignore the multiplats.
Dumb people for sure.To be fair if this was an XSX title running at those specs certain people would be jumping all over it on this forum...

1440p 60fps
1440p 30fps with more costly forms of RT implemented
Im all happy with that, and falls in line with my expectations when the consoles specs were announces
