Games this generation that could end up being Rare/Expensive:

I posted a topic similar to this before, but was unable to locate it. Due to a request, I have made a new one. All games are for PS2 unless otherwise stated. This guide is based on rarity, production run, future demand, and NPD numbers. If anything is missing or seems out-of-place, feel free to add anything.

NOTE: just because a game is listed here, doesn't mean its going to be worth money some day. Many of these games can be found now for $5 in dump bins at various locations. So, this is not a guide as to what games will become rare in the future, only games with the potential to become rare. Just being clear.

I stopped right there.

I doubt anyone cares if games like this are "rare" in the future. Crap tends to not become a collector's item.

How good the game isn't the only factor. Look at some of the Saturn stuff.

Also, Jarrod, if you can make a GBA list...do it!

Oh, I could do a really GOOD GBA list.

There are tons of very short-printed gems out there for that system.

I think you have to change your definition of rare. If a game has sold/shipped over 100000 unit's it can NEVER get rare.
I think rare is maybe at 10-15000 shipped max.

No, very few of these games are going to be collector's items. The point of the list is to show short-printed games and future rarities. Bad games generally don't become valuable(Case in point - Color a Dinosaur for the NES. One of the rarest games ever made, and it doesn't even go for $10)

Yeah... that reads more like a list of what was released this generation, not what's rare.

Several of those titles are still at my local TRU for $9.99, oddly enough. Perhaps I should horde them.

Depends, especially since one man's trash is another man's treasure. Demand has a large part in it, because there's several DC games that sold 200,000 copies that are going for over 100$ on ebay. Part of the reason why I just buy the games now when they get to clearance prices, and worry about playing them later, even if I don't have the system it plays on ( a system that I will eventually buy that is).

And before anybody asks "WHat? Paper Mario 2? Ninja Gaiden? WTF?" I think these games will one day stay pricey due to demand. Kind of like Final Fantasy III and Super Mario All-Stars still go for a lot of money today.

You never know though. Games like Lupin or Firefighter get downpriced, bargained, and then their just not seen much anymore. Then one day you see them on eBay for high rates comparably. Cubivore has gone that way. Quirky items, even when their not great games, often go that way.

Any guesses on what it goes for now? :D

Ha, fair enough. I saw that recently and was pretty shocked.

That one is ridiculous. I sold my extra copy for $80 some months ago.

Good idea, Sonic. I always try to buy the games I think will be hardest to find later on first when I go shopping for videogames. I don't intend to resell any of the games as collectors items I just don't want to be hassled by either having to pay too much for it on ebay or worse, having to resort to a used/bootleg copy in the future.

It would be wise to horde Gradius III&IV, Gradius V, La Pucelle Tactics, and Mr. Mosquito.

I would say maybe to Katamari Damacy, but it had a rather sizable print-run. Mad Maestro could be a sleeper in the future, once people realize how fun it is.

I'm having trouble finding "Bookworm" for GBA from a B&M or reputable site. They couldn't have printed many of those.

I did a search online but the few places I got hits at were No-name garage places.

If you buy Bookworm online, you'll pay a LOT.

However, there are many copies still in stores. It's a Wal-Mart exclusive. Head to your local Wal-Mart, and ask the dweeb behind the desk if he's willing to check the back room for any copies(I used to work at Wal-Mart, this works!). Buy every single copy they have.

The Wal-Mart I worked for had at least 20 copies of that game in the back, along with Bejeweled, another Wal-Mart exclusive by the same company(Though, Bejewed doesn't go for as much money.....yet.)

Yeah...I agree on Spikeout. It was just released, but the future isn't looking so bright.

Strap on your hooker ...
"Rare" isn't something to be attached to anything with a low print run, it signifies that supply does not meet demand. That simply doesn't apply for a lot of the games you listed, if someone wants Rogue Ops I seriously doubt there will ever be a time when they have a hard time finding it, and finding it cheap. There may not be too many copies out there of some things you listed, but I assure you many will never reach a point in the next 10 years where they'll go for more than half of their original retail price.

Yep. Your'e absolutely right. See post #9 for details.

Twelve stag
Gatcharok
Shox
Espgaluda
Chain Drive

GC
Homeland
Chaos Seed

Xbox
Magatama

hmm, and at a quick count, i've got over 150 of those listed rare games... *scratches chin*

What about Sam's Club? (Since they're linked to Wal-Mart)

That list is insanely long, and I wouldnt agree with most of the games listed, however, I'm quitely confident that my PAL version of Disgea will be pretty rare one day....

Here's a few GBA games that will undoubtebly go for a bit of change one day:

Chu Chu Rocket
Sega Rally Championship
Rayman Advance
Rocky
It's Mr. Pants
Super Bust-a-Move
The Land Before Time
Worms World Party
Blackthorne
Guilty Gear X
Metal Slug Advance
CIMA: The Enemy

Yes! Sam's club does carry it, in fact they often carry multi-packs of games. To find Bejewed/Denki Blocks/and Bookworm together? That would be nice.

Sometimes there are reasons why these games are hard to find, and in the case of Virtua Quest, it can stay hidden. We don't need anymore Dragonball GT Final Bouts.

Great list, I just think there are wayyy too many entries. Maybe you should split the list into two; games that are actually rare and games that will be pricey in the future based on other reasons. The former we can discuss with some certainty, the latter is mostly opinion and guessing. Granted, some of your guesses are very likely, such as RPG's, which always remain collectible. But there's also probably 100 (at least) games on this list which are currently both plentiful and dirt cheap, like the stuff from Agetec, EA, Activision, Vivendi and 3DO, for example.

Just for conversation purposes, the rarest games on this list, in my opinion:

Disney Basketball(GC)
Disney Football(GC)
Disney Soccer(GC)
Disney Party (GC)

These games are damn hard to find now and when you do they're usually in the $50 range. I never see 'em in stores and rarely online. Must've been very limited releases.

Good idea, maybe I will do that.

And you're right about the Disney games. There were 4 sports-releated Disney released for the Gamecube, all by Konami. These, like Konami's ESPN licenced games had exceedingly short print runs. Something to do with losing the Disney/ESPN liscence. EA produced Disney Party, but that is also very hard to locate.

The .hack titles aren't rare at all. But the first 3 .hacks are well out-of-print by now. ALso, most anime-inspired games tend to be worth something in the future. Except for Xenogears. That game will never be worth anything(not saying its bad...well, maybe I am...just saying they produced an ass-load of them).

But by the logic of "out of print" then EVERYTHING from the last gen is rare. It's just not the best criteria to use.

Oh, btw. the game Backyard Baseball for the GBA used to be rare, out of print, and very pricey.

Well, no longer, as the game is back in print. You can buy it right now at your local Gamestop/EB.

ManDudeChild said:

You're right. It depends on how many copies were printed. For instance, Metal Gear Solid 2 is out of print. But there were so many copies made of it that it'll never go up in value.

The .Hack games had limited(or, more limited in comparison) print-runs.

As far as GBA games go, Mario & Luigi should be on your list. After it had been out a few months, I've seen it maybe twice in stores.

I forgot about that one. Not rare at all, but it'll become like the first Mario RPG. In demand due to the game itself.

anyway your list is a little too forgiving, a game usually needs some fanbase/cult following for it to skyrocket in value
