Happy 20th Anniversary, Mega Man!

It got a mention.

Not the GBA version, though! That is, the one that came out in the US. I didn't notice it was missing until D3VI0US pointed it out, but it's definitely not there...

Wait a minute. Megaman has the same birthday as me? That's fucking weird because I'm a big Megaman fan and I NEVER knew that! :lol

I still love Mega Man so much but I just want a new game in the classic MM Universe with that art style.

Brilliant OP. Well done Mr. Cheesybloke.

I used to make up my own Robot Masters when I was younger too, not knowing that the contest was open only to the United States and/or Japan... But I still sent them to Capcom's US studio. I was really proud of them too!

Rest in peace Chemical Man, Slash Reptile and Chrome Phoenix. :(

I am looking to buy a collection of the first few MM's and I am tired of waiting for VC. Is the best option the megaman collection for PS2?

I was happy because of this awesome thread, then I read this and was reminded at how I felt when that was announced.

I'll... I'll just pretend I didn't.

Hope they re-release the Mega Man X Compilation by including X7 and X8 on it. Happy but pissed that X7 or X8 weren't in it.
Also put in all the content that they held back for the PSP remakes that were never released. First day for me.

Megaman X5 has the best boss music ever, I love that techno / electronic track that plays during the regular boss fights.

It's my birthday today too! That's like... totally awesome!!!

:D

Happy Birthday Mega Man. I stayed with you up until the first couple X games but we sorta fell apart (in fact my most-played Mega Man is Wily's Revenge for GameBoy) . Here's to better days. :p

I remember getting this for the NES in 88'...before the days of internet reviews...What a gem of a game...Love that last level...Very creative design for it's day...

A few other MM games are missing too.

-MMX3 got a 3DO port, but it's JP only.
-MM Game Gear, which contained bits of MM4/5 iirc and was developed by US Gold.
-VC releases of MM1-2
-tons of MM cellphone games (good luck with that tho)

This thread is awesome.

The original series and Legends have always been the best. For some reason, I really like the X games as much when I was a kid, even though those were the current ones.

Did anyone here pick up the 20th Anniversary Rockman 1-6 Arrangement? It's done in a rock style. If you love Rockman music (and I think everyone does), you owe it to yourself to snag this. Well worth the money.

Yes, it didn't click with me initially but after a while, it became one of my favorite MM boss themes. The synth voices sealed it.

No Megaman came out today?

You mean out of all of the million Megaman releases between the 80s and the end of time, they didn't release one on his 20th birthday?

What the fuck, maaaan.
After reading that feature in EGM on SF and how Capcom didn't realize that fans expected a 4th title, I think we will eventually see MM 9 or at least X9. Capcom fans expect those titles just as much I'd say. And it will be glorious.

While some gamers attached a hero status to Link, Mario, Sonic, etc. as kids, MM was probably the closest to one for me. I didn't play many of the games till years later, but had an amazing time with the earlier classics and then X was such a perfect transition into 16-bit. Looked and sounded beautiful, awesome gameplay and even a little bit of story to make the franchise more intriguing. X is my favorite actually. It upset me to see some of the changes X2 made (no more changing levels, boring select screen).

Best boss select screen ever. And as always, excellent OP duties Cheese.

Wow, this thread didn't garner nearly as much attention as the Final Fantasy one did.

It's kind of amazing for those of us who still remember the days when Mega Man was a big name in video games. He was once much more popular than Final Fantasy.

And yet, here we are, and we haven't even had a traditional Mega Man game in almost 10 years.

... Look, I don't want to stink up the thread meant to celebrate the Blue Bomber, so I'll just ask you this:

Has what happened to Mega Man been any more drastic a change than what has happened to Final Fantasy?

Looking at this thread makes me sad that we'll probably never see Maverick Hunter-X2 or Powered-Up 2 on the PSP. Instead, Capcom will keep churning out those blasted Battle Network games. :(

I dunno. Both series are pretty unrecognizeable to me today.

At least Final Fantasy games are still Role-Playing. They're just more...'cinematic', for better or worse. However, most Mega Man games being released are not platformers. And the very few that still are don't even have Mega Man himself in them.

RIP Megaman.

Exactly. It's not really Mega Man's 20th birthday. It's like celebrating Elvis or John Lennon's birthday. He would have been 20.

Haven't tried MHX yet, but for me Powered Up is the perfect example of what Totilo was talking about on (I think) 1UP Yours a while back, regarding the value of remakes. Even after playing every NES Megaman to hell and back, PU never feels like retreading old ground just for nostalgia's sake, because it brings meaningful updates to the game, and the gameplay still compares well with modern titles. If only we had more modern 2D platformers, I could make a more meaningful comparison.

It would be a shame if we don't see more of the Powered Up series. I'm holding out hope for an XBLA/PSN/WW release.

MEGA thread

I cannot believe time flies this fast :)
And to think ... so many here were not even born yet when MM made his debut... As young gamers you need to experience Megaman, one way or another... find a way ... do not deprive yourself of this.

Don't the X games on the PS2 count as "traditional" mega man? I've never played them so I dunno how they handle.

To be honest, I mostly just rake over the Anniversary and X Collections nowadays. I have the original carts for the NES games, but those are more for nostalgia's sake. Beyond that, I have Zero 3 for the GBA, which sort of feels like the old games, and that's it.

[Great list]
Good job!

I'm a bit surprised about two rehashing of songs, even if it's only on ads.

They used Ganasia's Electrical Communication from MM8 on this game?! It's an awesome song, though, and since Super Adventure came out by the time 8 was out and the setting is classic Mega Man, with 8 being the last one it does make sense.

But Reika Morishita's Another Sun being used on this commercial for the PSP version of X... What the fuck, this song always belonged to Legends. This is so wrong for me. ;_;

The rest of the videos are ok with some very nice ones in between. Oh, and Rina's Code Crush rocks too.

And, man, I love the Zero's games OSTs so much.
