How Capcom Did The IMPOSSIBLE

I feel like even during their 'worst' gen, which people will say is the PS360 gen, they still gave us quite a few gems:
  • Lost Planet 1
  • Lost Planet 2
  • Ultimate MvC 3
  • Asura's Wrath
  • Bionic Commando Rearmed 1
  • Bionic Commando Rearmed 2
  • Dead Rising 1
  • Dead Rising 2
  • D&D console edition
  • A bunch of Megaman games including MM 9 and 10
  • A bunch of Phoenix Wright games
  • Zack and Wiki
  • Monster Hunter Frontier
  • Monster Hunter Stories
  • RE: Revelations
  • RE 5
  • Street Fighter 4
  • Tatsunoko vs Capcom
They did a great job keeping up with tech too, especially since other Japanese companies were struggling badly with both Xbox 360's western market share and PS3's cell tech.
The entire industry in dept to Capcom, they handled dark periods singlehandedly.

asha sharma should buy capcom
I think you knew what type of responses you'd get.

Not sure if the video brings this up, but Street Fighter 6's single player story/expanded tutorial/RPG mode created a way to learn the mechanics of SF in a way that was engaging for me and pulled me into the series. I've always appreciated the music and characters of SF but have felt learning the game wasn't fun so I never tried getting into the series. I think this is just another example of Capcom operating on a really compelling level. I know multiplayer is the backbone of fighting games but I don't have siblings or friends I can play with with for multiplayer and I'm not good enough to engage in online SF multiplayer yet. I hope they continue to expand and develop SF in a way where it offers fun single player experiences.

If I was introduced to the series with Sleep Fighter VI and had to constantly read text message chains and grind trash mini games to buy junk for a crappy avatar and unlock the only visually appealing costumes for the uncanny valley roster I would probably toss it in the bin and think the franchise was whack.

They are on a unstoppable roll with Resident Evil and can't wait to see more Resident Evil stuff later this year and in the following years.

100%. Also worth noting they were basically the only Japanese dev putting out technically impressive games for most of that generation.

I guess as long as it's single player and it has some production value people will not question the games beyond that point anymore.

Still props to them for releasing single player AAA every year because yes you can only admit that without them there's pretty much nothing except like the annual Sony AAA, not much else.

But in my opinion the games are just average (and that's almost being nice).

Along the Activision Blizzard exclusives!
Along with the rest of their inhouse studios exclusive.

but yeah id be a bit worried about them owning capcom. tango works was a great chance for them to truly understand and understand teh japanese games market from the perpective of a studio onwer and they shut them down. As much as id like them to own a few japanese studios im not that confident.....

what they do have is a lot of great western developers under their ladder that they need to support and the good willsurely be delivered to the xbox gamers and potential new xbox customers. they dont really need capcom to do it. but its a cool idea that maybshould just stay an idea. capcom are one of those companies I would like to see stay independant to be honest. but maybe money hat a capcom exclusive or two if they want to be aggressive.

overall I say they just double down with what they have. its already a lot. they just need to make most of it exclusive. COD, overwatch etc are fine as multiformat income generartors though. they can play both sides of the coin with what they have if they make smart choices

A boring arcade mode or barebones tutorial mode where you sift through endless mini tutorials that just present to you text describing mechanics and put combos in your face to try attempting as you sit in a boring, generic, tutorial stage hasn't been more appealing to me when I've tried fighting games before. I doubt I'm the only one that feels fond for SF6 judging by the sales the game has accrued.

They didn't, modern Resident Evil does nothing but follow trends.
Capgod has more than RE now, MH was a niche game for handhelds more than two decades ago, now it's mainstream on consoles, DMC is popular, REmakes + Mainline games keep crushing it, even SF6 is doing good and now we even have new IP like Dad Space that most people enjoy for being great

They did exactly what you would prescribe to your favorite developer who is now floundering. Go back to your roots and double down. Stop the focus groups. Stop trying to please a perceived market. Just do what you do good.

And Mega Man Star Force Collection's success is potentially reviving a long-dead Mega Man sub-series.

All they do is mediocre "horror" games and fighters. Like every other modern publisher they only fund what makes them the most money because the world is mediocre and afraid of innovation now.

It's funny because RE7 released to underwhelming sales and people thought the series was doomed. Little did they know.

I own a copy and I can't even play for 15 minutes without rolling my eyes and turning it off. Good fighting games do not need tutorials or practice mode or training stages as you just learn as you play a fun game.

  • (00:02–00:33) The modern gaming industry is dominated by questionable "truths": single-player games are risky, new IPs don't sell, and everything must be live service or open-world. Capcom is succeeding by ignoring these assumptions.
  • (00:33–01:05) Capcom's 2026 performance is exceptional: three major releases in four months, all commercially successful—something rare among AAA studios.
  • (01:05–02:16) The industry's "playing it safe" mindset leads to massive budgets and bland, overly broad games designed to offend no one—ultimately making them less appealing.
SP are risky, so while a lot of studios struggle, some went to cheap tactics of overmilking fanbase (compared to current industry "standards")

  • (02:16–03:46) Games are increasingly treated as long-term "platforms" (live services), prioritizing endless engagement over focused, high-quality experiences.
  • (04:28–05:26) Capcom's recent releases (e.g., Resident Evil Requiem, Monster Hunter Stories, Pragmata) show strong sales—even for a risky new IP—proving demand still exists for diverse, single-player experiences.
Pragmata sold 2 millions - for "normal" big AAA it's clearly underperformance. But for Capcom business strategy it's a workable number.

  • (06:22–06:56) A large-scale study (34,000 players across 22 countries) confirms most gamers actually prefer single-player games, contradicting industry assumptions.
When I see this statement, I immediately understand that person either lying or braindead.
Study was about preference for single-player ~experience~ and not single-player games. You'll not fool anyone with 60+% preference in Asia for single-player, when 90% of market there is live service games (coincidentally - they are for most part single-player focused gaas games like Genshin)

  • (07:19–08:41) Capcom's turnaround began around 2017 with Resident Evil 7, focusing on internal improvements like the RE Engine and consistent quality across titles.
  • (09:03–10:12) Their philosophy: make focused, well-designed games (typically 10–30 hours), not bloated experiences. Scope control is a major strength.
  • (10:12–11:58) Capcom efficiently reuses assets, technology, and systems across games, building a long-term development foundation instead of reinventing everything each time.
Basically this - make 10hr game on reused asset and sell it for 70$
Cheap production, high price, if you had manage to sell it (and sticking to names, either game itself or yours, really helps) - easy get to profit

PS. I don't see anything wrong with Capcom strategy. It's excellent move and it's make AAA gaming works outside of supermassive games like GTA, CoD or FIFA. But insisting that it's a miracle and lifeline for SP (or even turning point in their battle against GaaS) is a stretch of enormous proportion and a lot of fact bending and wishful thinking. Not everyone can get a list of names of Capcom scale.

Good for them, but I found RE9 to be underwhelming.

That Crowbcat video of the RE4 Remake is a good summary for modern Capcom.
Truth. I say that as someone who loved RE4 remake. I still felt it's flaws and how safe it played it. Crowbat did a good job of showcasing it impartially. Dude didn't even commentate like every other youtuber. Just a series of comparison shots that spoke for themselves.

Also, yes they fumbled RE9. The biggest budget any game in the series has ever had, and you really couldn't tell.
