Ubisoft is set to release its next Prince of Persia game later this year on Steam, developed by Dead Cells developer Evil Empire. The game, ‘The Rogue Prince of Persia,’ will launch in Early Access on Steam and mark Ubisoft’s first day-one Steam release since 2019.

Sources say the Rogue Prince of Persia is a new Roguelite that will receive constant free updates and evolve over time based on community feedback.

*It should be noted: Evil Empire did not make Dead Cells, per se; that was Motion Twin.

Evil Empire is Motion Twin's content partner, and they worked on all the DLC and maintenance/updates for the game since 2019, including Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania. EE is something of a spin-off of Motion Twin, and it basically took over the ongoing game development for Dead Cells (with consultation with the MT team; both studios are based in France, FYI.) The two studios only recently officially ended new content support for Dead Cells last February after 5 years, 4 DLCs, 18 updates, and a bunch of free stuff on top of an epically-long base game.

This rumored Prince of Persia game would be the first ground-up title from Evil Empire.

Motion Twin has, in the meantime, been active in the time since the 2018 launch of Dead Cells (in part thanks to this Evil Empire partnership keeping Cells active) and has commenced its next project. Their follow up is called Windblown, and it is a solo/3p-co-op 3D roguelike action game. The game will see an Early Access release on PC in 2024.

Who is making this? The actual OG dead cells dev who is no longer at the studio?

Original Dead Cells game designer Sébastien Benard is not with Motion Twin anymore, nor is he involved with Evil Empire; original DC art designer Thomas Vasseur is still there.

(There were growing pains at the studio, or rather collective, when they tried to create the sophomore follow-up to their blockbuster, and things just couldn't work there the old way anymore. Bernard left/was forced out. You can read his assessment of the complicated situation in his blog. Cut to now, and the situation is complicated, but it boils down to Benard and others have formed their own tiny-form studios, Motion Twin is largely a new company working under a new model of being a bigger company still trying the collective approach, and Evil Empire is its own thing also now looking towards its new future. Benard did say that he considered Evil Empire to be, "the only true Dead Cells team...basically Evil Empire that managed to carry the flame for so long, with a true love for the franchise." Evil Empire itself was formed as a sister studio of Motion Twin in the beginning of the complications, when some members of the collective had the idea to treat Dead Cells as a long-tail service game while Motion Twin would just game-jam out new concepts in search of the next big idea... which unfortunately didn't flower up quite as hoped for Motion Twin, but worked out beautifully for Evil Empire.)

Bernard has his own one-man game company called DeepNight Games, and it has already release a 2D action-platformer firefighter game called Nuclear Blaze for PC/Switch/PS4.
