No, Wanda, you must continue to rise above the non-game oppressors! :(

Also, looks like VJ DS is a Capbomb. Another real game bomb on the DS. :(

Mama Smurf

My penis is still intact.
I'm still not entirely sure why VJ games are still being made anyway. The first one did quite well, but nothing special, and the second completely bombed. I guess these two really will kill the series.

Capcom thought they had a franchise on their hands with Viewtiful Joe, but it looks like the success of the first game was just a coincidence, not to be repeated.

How good/popular is the anime?

Is it coming to US shores?

It's amazing to see new franchises and titles tumble within days, yet just near-constant sales of a 20-year-old NES game. Not even enhanced like SMB DX, just... a NES ROM with a bit of tweaking to fit the resolution better. Nostalgia is a powerful tool.

QFT.

I really hope Viewtiful Joe does better over here. It's one of my favorite franchises but it's done nothing but bomb since the original was released. Luckily it's arriving here before any of the other big guns in November, so it at least has a week before the torrential onslaught. (that probably made no sense, but I thought it sounded cool)

These games have entirely different audiences with different buying habits. If you were a gamer and enjoyed mario bros. back then but aren't a gamer anymore then the release dates really don't matter as much. You see it in a store one day and want to play that game again you used to enjoy a long time ago and buy it. Even if it's a re-release that happened months ago. Titles that are hyped within the gamer community are of course focused on their release dates.

Viewtiful Joe (GC): 308,131
Viewtiful Joe (PS2): 93,701
Viewtiful Joe 2 (GC): 115,847
Viewtiful Joe 2 (PS2): 51,992

For a straight sequel that reuses engine and assets, that's pretty good money in the bank :)

Interesting bit: The viewtiful joe producer/designer or whatever his position was at GDC talked about how viewtiful joe was a "team oriented" project that succeeded in building a new franchise. So I guess that means Capcom didn't really expect it to do well in the first place.

Its not even sold half of the first game's amount yet. And I seem to recall Capcom being disappointed with VJ's US sales, saying it didn't meet their estimates. Personally I think their estimates are bullshit and they should be happy if it sold 2/3 of that amount, but regardless, the sequel's sales must look awful to them.

I wouldn't personally mind if these were the last VJ games we saw for quite a while (noty forever, but if so...so be it), the franchise needs a rest. Clover look like they'll make some great games, but I'm not hopeful of Okami selling either (hope I'm wrong), they really need to pull out some bigger sellers as well as the more quirky titles.

I agree that they are rushing out too many VJ titles. The sequel came waaaaaay too early too. I do think that it made good money on the 150k units in the US. Not many titles sell that much to begin with.

Well seeing as how VJ didn't sell well on the PS2 and Gamecube userbases why in the hell would anybody think this game would takeoff on a handheld with less people?

Shit if the Japanese didn't play the game on the PS2 I was so sure that it would take off on something with less potential buyers! :lol

Nice avatar.

Hmmm... I can't wait for MK release. Wonder what legs it will have in Japan.

I think its insane that the DS pretty much owns Japan now. Sales like these really have me believing that the Revolution might actually do something over there besides bomb horribly like the Gamecube.

SotC should do better than that. It just kills me that the Japanese only buy non-games WTF is with that. They're killing good franchises in the process for fucks sake!

Heck even the only PSP game on the chart is a non-game WTF!

I don't know if it got better since, but the first episode of Viewtiful Joe sucked.

I don't know guys, SotC is not really all that good of an example for classic gaming. And I can also see how someone can be thrown off by, say, it's controls and camera.

As a preface, I wasn't a fan of Ico, so I haven't nor do I intend on playing SotC. I think you make good points.

Anyone got any idea how well this has sold? It amazes me just how well the DS is doing, the Japanese are reall buying into it at the moment!!

I can see a few games creeping close to the 1M mark in Japan by xmas (both Brain Trainings, Nintendogs, Wario Ware, Super Mario 64), while the best selling PSP game is still Hot Shots golf on around 400k!!

Amazing.

Maybe the DS will be a return to the SNES glory days when we had games like Street Fighter, Donkey Kong, Chrono Trigger doing some amazing numbers:

http://www.everythingandnothing.org...1=Donkey+Kong+Country&name2=Street+Fighter+II
http://www.everythingandnothing.org...e1=Chrono+Trigger&name2=Donkey+Kong+Country+2

Will be interesting to see how Animal Crossing, Mario Kart DS etc do...

I think VJ series have failed because the milking´s been too obvious. Actually I liked the first game very much, but I hadn´t time to anticipate the second one, not to say the two games that have been released this year.

About non-games ruling Japan. Well, again, it´s all about what you consider a game.

Nobody's killing anything, because they wouldn't buy stuff like SotC anyway. Do you honestly think that more than a handful of pepole are thinking "Hmmm... I only have a bit of cash - should I buy Shadow of the Colossus, or a Brain Training game for the DS?"

They lost buyers when they wen't multi-platform from Gamecube. It's sad, but it's probably true.

And the latest milking just makes it worse.

... Right.

VJ was a great idea. People obviously wanted a new action side-scroller that wasn't Mega Man or any other of the old 8-bit characters. But Capcom started to milk it too soon. It wouldn't have sold better if they had stuck with the GC.

Did anyone watch it, is it nicely translated? That may be worth checking out, do you know when its on Cvx?

Pokémon Torouze is a straight-up puzzle game isn't it? I don't see how a Tetris (or Zoo Keeper, more specifically) clone is suddenly a non-game. . .

Anything to talk down the DS I guess.

And the PS2 game is one of those pachinko/slot machine games, not much of a game but not a 'non-game' in any sense. And Wanda is still in the top 10, no one should be complaining. Though I feel bad for Super Princess Peach. There needs to be more love for sprite based 2D games.

It´s been like this forever. When people can´t accept that Nintendo sells well, they begin their stupid speech: Nintendo is for kids, Nintendo makes non-games, Nintendo is always doing the same games... you know, they cannot argue about quality, so they try to argue about trivial things.

It seems that these days, every game that doen't fit the pattern of having the player accomplish goals in 3D levels via a 3rd or 1st person persepective and a weapon in your hand broken up by cutscenes is a non-game.

Also applicable for the "game" status are sometimes titles that have you race in a car or participate in a simulated sports event.

Real games today are also measured on an "quality of experience" scale and not on a "fun" scale.
</troll>

Please remember that games are still a sub-category of toys. There are non-games on the DS, granted, but many of those are great toys.
