Well, lets see here.

Bird is around the 250 lbs mark with most it being muscle. Aggressive as hell. He's a decent boxer (boxing is one of the best martial arts out there) with what seems like a good chin and real KO power.

I'm guessing no.

Seriously. I see this guy beating the shit out of people like Tank Abbot and Gary Goodridge as he is right now. Even people in his weight class who would beat him would probably get a few scrapes unless they control him immediately. People below his weight class (Excluding light heavy) Well, only a select few could beat him.

Don't underestimate size, aggression, and down right badmotherfuckerness. Powerful attributes.

Well stated. People have no idea what it's like to fight somebody who literally doesn't give a shit. I have and it is not a good time. Even if you could beat him, he's just gonna hammer and do as much damge as he can. You don't want to fight anybody like that unless you're defeding yourself or lovesones and your life depended on it. This guy is in pretty good shape and has the extreme attitude. You can tell form that video that he's focused and displined. He ain't nothing to prove becuase he knows he's the shit! He's all about don't tell me, show me! You fight this guy bring a sack lunch, because it's going to be a long day.

Biff, that's the whole reason I got into boxing. It such an underrated martial art, and it's something you can do as you get older (I'll be 35 next month). People watch fights and think they know but you'll never truly know until you lace up those glove and get into a ring with somebody who's better than you. Even with gear and rules, if you don't know what youre doing against a pro, you will get handled. You can have the best hands in the world but you still need awesome physical conditioning to be effective. As you saw from that video 2-3 good shots from Kimbo and the other guys was toast.

I agree with you on all points. Especially against fighting someone like that. You know, when I first started studying grappling I saw all the videos of how easily people go down from simple takedowns. I really thought it was that easy. Well, after training some I realized it isn't. Taking someone down your weight class who's near your skill level is rough.

I'm not talking about taking down some big fatso and armbarring them. Anyone can do that with a certain amount of training time. I'm talking about trying to tackle some powerful guy who can hit, is aggressive and knows how to hold his posture. That is a rough prospect for anyone.

If we are talking about someone who is bigger (and they ussually are when you are defending yourself), it only gets harder. I've taken down guys who had weight on me. But, like you say...it wasn't fun at all. You get hit in the fucking nose and it starts to bleed, you drive in and push all your weight foward to put him down and he's still up, throwing hooks into your ribs and scuffing blows that leave knots on your forehead. It flat out sucks quite frankly.

Later on one of my BJJ coaches told me that shooting in was the worst thing you could do. It was weird for him to say this I thought, because he was a wrestlling coach at some university. But, he told me that its just putting yourself in a terrible position. I asked him about guys like Kerr and Coleman who could takedown anyone, and he reminded me they were 250 lbs of steroid muscle. Something I'm not.

Later on when I met my internals coach, I learned really how terrible it is just to bumrush into someone thinking your a badass who will ground him. This guy could tie me up and hit me withe elbows, fists, knees, and forearms.

I sort of got off tangent here, but your post reminded me of my early experiences thinking I could just crush a boxer. Hell, I didn't even fight a good boxer the first few times and I got 2 concussions. Just someone whho had 40 or 50 lbs on me. That qualed him being hard to takedown and me taking punches after punches. Only when I started to learn how to punch and forget about just rushing in did I do OK.

Personally, I think boxing is the best pure martial art for self defense. I'm not talking about that pitty pat Olympic boxing bullshit, but good ol' fashioned heavyweight boxing. Setting your feet, dropping your weight into the punch, feeling that hit on every knuckle and then through your wrist. Makes an impression.

For one, it teaches you how to deal with the stress of a fight better then any other martial art I've seen. Your being hit, and your hitting back. You'd be surprised how your best "tough guy" punches become bullshit girly man punches when your trying to hit the other guy but just can't. Oh yeah, then you get hit in the face...your head shakes, and your knees get wobbly. Suddenly throwing windmill punches is the least of your problems.

The first thing my coach had me do for months was hold up my hands and learn how to take punch after punch to them. I did this for months, classes were basically just getting hit in the arms all day. But, I learned allot from that. It helped me deal with the sress of a fight and someone punching you so well. I learned how to block with my elbows and the heel of my palm.

Then when I tried sparring all that shit went out the window and I got punched in the face like 2087298382 times in 2 minutes. But, that was just mental. Once you start to settle in the defense aspect comes back. Then its a good feeling to have a big, heavy guy come charging in and you lay a real solid block and jam him up.

You add that kind of defense in with being able to hold and hit, working those punches from the clinch while you make yourself nice and heavy...you've got a real good package for basic self defense.

I agree that boxing is underrated by most people. Probably because of its simplicity and its commonplace. People want something with more mystique. But, here is something that will teach you how to deal with serious crisis when your in a vunerable position. That's terrific!

Biff you make some very valid points. I once witnessed a very large aggresive man like this get schooled by a very small Korean boy. We were kids at your standard camp fire party when some very large burly bikers show up and start, well being big imposing men. This little Korean guy just kinda stood there and very sheepishly asked the guy why he was being so mean. At the time I seriously thought he was insane. The big angry biker was probable in you 6'3 to 5 range definatly the high two hundreds and aggresive. Smacking guys around its not pretty. Anyway they square off and the guy come in just like this big black dude does. The second he planted his feet to throw they little guy kicked him on the inside of the knee and it buckled. He dropped to one knee the little dude kicked him harder in the jaw then I've ever seen or every hope to see again. That's it game over. The guy's jaw was I swear an inch off center and at the time it looked like 5 inches. So in the end big and burly can get worked by skill. It's really all about that one shot.

It was unreal. Probably the coolest part was it was in a small Canadian town and the Korean guy was kind of an outsider. Tough to break into a group of 90% white guys. So no one ever expected him to step up for the guys he did. They never would have done it for him. In all honesty allot of the crowd were pulling for the biker. Well untill that first kick hit his knee. Then every one knew it was a miss match.

That's great, darscot. Really, I love to hear stories like that. It makes me happy and its inspiring. Absolutely, I agree that the big and burly can get fucked up ( as your story illustrates). I'm just saying that common sense is important, theres a reason for weight classes ecd.

What a smart fighter that Korean was. Cool man, thanks for sharing.

Edit: I also like that the Korean won by striking. My internals coach keeps telling me not to wrestle the bigger guy but to focus on the clean hit.

wrestling anyone who weighs more than 30 or 40 pounds than you is always fucking hell.

edit: unless they don't know what they're doing (and even then it's really not very fun)

LOL, I guess there similar. Even when it happened It felt like movie. But I swear to you it did happen. Actually it didn't really feel like a movie. If you've ever seen some hit that hard in real life it kinda makes you sick. It's too much reality. You don't get up and brush your self off. You twitch and convulse and go to a hospital and drink from a straw for a long time.

Great story Darscot. And I've seen many a bully get put into place by seemingly lesser/inferior opponents. Most bullys have never been challenged due to overpowering attitudes and intidimidating physiques. I put the smack on a few athletes back in my college days. Big bad ass who're used to getting their way, atheletes are the biggest chumps on the planet...but I digress. I learned a long time ago, don't fight if you don't have to because you NEVER know who you're messing with. Maybe later I'll share a college story of some rich frat guys who came into a bar and was giving a guy a hard time because of the way he was dressed. They found out the hard way that he was ex-special forces, and it was a pretty messy ordeal.

The point I was trying to make was about somebody like Kimbo was that he is not a bully. In the video it's obvious he had a rep to maintain, and that's how he makes bucks on the side. So it's like a job to him, more so than say Roy Jones Jr to a certain extent. He's trained disiplined and carved out of granite. He's not stupid enough to fall for a cheap trick. You can bet your ass he's sizing things up the minute he walks into a room. While you're sipping Long Island ice tea, he's calculating and scheming how to get into your grip. I can just tell form that video, because I've had to square off with dudes like that. You learn to recognize them really quick, and appreciated that barbarism in the right hands is a powerful skill. He's not the guy you want to mix it up with unless you have to. If he threatened me or my loved ones then I'd have to deal with that. He talks smack to you, you get up from your stoll and walk away. He smacks your significant other, then you go for yours. But I could think of a lot more pleasant things I could do.

Anyway, Biff how did you come across this video? I can tell you it has me going to the gym tonight with a bit more focus. Great motivational piece. :)

I felt really bad for cutting the gym the other night. My girlfriend was sick, buut I still should've put in a 1/2 hour of bag work. Now I just think of Kimbo and I race to the gym. That video is the fighter the version of 'Scared Straight'. ;)

I'm a 2nd degree black in Taekwondo, and I'm in great shape, but that guy still would have kicked my ass. Training against other humans in sparring and boxing is the best way to become a good fighter.

I know a few guys on the wrestling team who could take out a football lineman any day of the week.

HA! It was for me too. Last night after seeing that I felt I needed to train or do ANYTHING productive. And that's after already putting my hours at the gym earlier in the day.

Seeing a dude get slumped like that makes me think "that could be me if I start slacking off".

I got it from Ironlife.com which is probably the best combat sports hilite forum around. Check out the "hilites" section.

This guy reminds me of bob sapp only meaner looking.

Me too, except not just meaner looking but a real fighter.

Wow-- just downloaded that video. :eek

That guy is NUTS. He's built like a house, yet is surprisingly light on his feet for a man that size (I'd put him at 6'3"/260). The shocking part is not the damage he inflicted on that guy's eye (which was very hard to see until the very end of the clip), but rather that he took a good 2-4 SOLID shots from a guy his own size and it didn't even faze him-- that was unbelievable.

That's definitely a guy you walk away from unless he's physically harming either you or a loved one or something, I don't care who you are. Man...

Kimbo Slice: Miami Street Fighting Legend

Kimbo, cousin of boxer Emmanuel Augustus, is a badass Miami enforcer who fights for purses of 3-5 gs on a regular basis. He'll put up his money up against yours to find out who is superior. He doesn't care if it's at your place of work or in your own backyard. If you're willing to put up the dough, he'll fight you for it. In the clip below he attempts to earn more green by going heads up against another stocky brawler named Byrd.

http://www

For those of you who don't know the full story behind that video, here goes.

Kimbo Slice (amazingly that's his last name) is an ex-con who did ten years of hard time but was finally released about 10 months ago. He fights in underground boxing matches from time to time winning purses that range from 3-10 thousand gs. This year alone, he's 9-1. His lone loss was suffered when his opponent used mace. Kimbo acknowledges the loss because he says, "I shoulda kicked his ass much faster and knocked the bitch out cold. And before the fight we said no weapons, but didn't say no mace."

Backed by the owner of a popular Miami based porn website, Kimbo earned his first 10 thousand dollar purse when he knocked out that same opponent in a rematch. The bout took but a mere 10 seconds. Not taking any chances, Kimbo pounced on his opponent 5 times after he was out cold.

Kimbo is well aware that underground fighting is illegal but he cannot help it. He can't earn a decent living through legit means because of his prison track record. If you were a big bad ass in his situation and someone came up to you and said, "I know someone who will fight you for 10 grand heads up", you might consider it also.

Kimbo is now considering turning pro through the advice of his cousin, Emmanuel Augustus, and local boxing trainers in Miami. Once he turns pro, he will leave his underground fighting days behind. As he contemplates the countless possibilities, Kimbo will continue to fight in underground battles to provide for himself and his disabled mother. As Kimbo so eloquently put it, "That's how a nigga eat."

1. Kimbo are you a boxing fan? If so, who are your favorite fighters now and of all-time?

Yes, I’m a boxing fan. I watch it from time to time. My all-time favorites are Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson.

2. You are a big guy, exactly how tall are you and how much do you weigh?

I’m roughly 6’3, 240 pounds.

3. Have you ever lost a fight underground? What is your record if you know?

I’ve lost my share in the pen. I don’t keep track but I’ve won much more than I’ve lost. Since I was released almost one year ago, I’ve gone 9-1. My only loss was to a punk that brought mace to the dance. I was kicking his ass and he used the mace as I went in for the kill. I accept the loss. I’m a man. Before the fight we said no weapons but we didn’t say no mace. He regretted doing that. I knocked him out within ten seconds in our rematch and pounded on him five more times for insurance. He lost all his front teeth but we’re good friends now. It’s about respect.

4. What tools do you posess and what tools are you working on that you think will make you a professional threat?

I’ve got a powerful left hook and a lot of intensity. The intensity comes from the anger within. The establishment took ten years of my life and now I’m gonna take it back.

5. Are you in training right now to polish your boxing skills and if so how is that going?

I recently started training at a local gym here in Miami. I’m working on my conditioning and defense. I feel I done created a great offense from my days in the pen. That was Education 101.

6. Can you make noise in the heavyweight division? How long will it take?

That’s what my trainers think. They say the division is open and I might as well take a crack at it. We’ll see what happens. I’ll probably only need about ten pro fights before I’m ready to knock all them fools out.

7. Can you tell us about your time spent incarcerated and if that would pose a problem getting you licensed in any state professionally?

I was incarcerated for some bullshit I didn’t do. Let’s leave it at that. I hope my past don’t come back to haunt me. This nigga gotta keep eatin.

8. Alot of people who will watch the tape of one of your fights will say you are an ultimate fighter not a boxer and that your a freak show not worth our time, what would you like to say to them?

I am a freak and that’s why people should pay to see me. I don’t box and do that pansy boy shit. I like to run this like Iron Mike.

9. Are there any plans for you to fight professionaly against a specific opponent any time soon?

We’re working on getting me licensed here in Miami. I might turn pro within a few months.

10. Do you want to be a champion or a freak puncher just to make some money? How commited are you to becoming a complete boxer?

I’m 32 years old dawg. I gots to make the dough to support myself and my disabled moms. God bless her soul. I live to bleed for that woman. I want to go as far as my power will take me.

11. How long will it take you after turning pro to become a good slugger-boxer and become a championship level fighter?

I have a lot of respect for the game. I know many of these fighters have been putting in their work for years. But they ain’t never been in the pen as long as I have. I have skills you can’t learn on the outside. I feel I’ll be ready for anyone within ten fights.

12. What would you like to say to our readers and hopefully your future fans?

I’d like to thank everyone who has sent me emails. If you liked what you saw in that short clip, come out and support me when I turn pro. I’m ready to run this. I’m out.

Id like to thank Marcos Rivera for setting up this interview

Biff...is Byrd the guy with the fucked up eye?

Is he the one that died? Did we find out how Byrd was killed?

Do you think he might have been killed by the other darker skinned boxer after trying to get revenge on him?

Byrd is Kimbo Slice, no not the guy with the fucked up eye. He's a bodyguard type for the porn producer(the white guy in the video) on inthevip.com, a p0rn site. He can be seen there feeling up drunks kanks. He is alive and well. The killed story was just a rumor, anotehr rumor is the other guy got killed.
