Another thing I think it's useful to mention: Some of these can be watched (by Americans at least) legally for free on Hulu.

Big Windup
Casshern Sins
Gankutsuou
Monster
Mushi-Shi (but not the entire series)
Oh! Edo Rocket
Shigurui
Spice and Wolf
Tatami Galaxy

It's a shame they don't have all of Mushi-Shi because that is one of the most refreshing anime I've seen this decade. If you want to see something different from the usual anime character or plot tropes, you should definitely check this series out.
All of Mushi-shi is on netflix instant streaming. It's dubbed but I think they did a good job with the dub

It is reasonable, but a tad lifeless. It's not really a patch on the excellent Japanese cast.

Also on a another note i don't think the whole series was recorded in english. Only the first 70 episodes IIRC.

Nope. I love it as well.

Great choices. I'm going to add two others.

Bokura ga Ita
26 episodes - unlicensed

bokuragaita.jpg

This one is probably complicated to define as there are so many factors within it. Most shoujo tend to play around with the love-chase i.e. boy meets girl, girl meets boy, they don't end up together until the very last episode. This one is different in that it breaks that barrier and shows how friendships and the past can affect how much love one can give. It's up there amongst Honey & Clover as one of my favourite slice-of-life dramas.

Tokyo Marble Chocolate
2 episode OVA - unlicensed

tokyomarblechocolate.jpg

A couple briefly experience the ups and downs of a relationship on the eve of Christmas, a special time for lovers. At times beautifully animated with hints of surrealism, it's a beautiful tale woven in 1 hour and 30 mins altogether showing each side of the tale (one episode follows the male, the other follows the female - it's up to you to choose which one to watch first and then last).

I love the 2 songs used in this 2-parts movie:

Sukima Switch - Zenryoku Shounen (Boy's POV of the story)

SEAMO - Mata Aimashou (Girl's POV of the story)

There only are 74 episodes. All of which have aired on Syfy in the US.

The dub is good. A little dull, and I just generally hate Nina's VA in everything, but it's still pretty good. The Japanese is better, but not like "oh my god don't ever ever ever watch the show in English" better.

Now Fantastic Children....don't ever ever ever ever watch the show in English. :lol It was dubbed in Singapore with a cast of like 6 people who sound like they just got pulled off of the street. Not at all exaggerating.

Ah, what the fuck, here are the other ones I would want to mention for shiggles.

Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wings
b0e2g.jpg

An original anime about a new member of the JASDF's search and rescue helicopter wing - essentially the Japanese version of the US Coast Guard. We watch as our protagonist deals with the responsibility of holding other people's lives in his hands. He learns to cope with the fact that death is a possibility in these high risk rescue situations, and the show is as much about the psychology of being a front-line rescue worker as it is about the technology (helicopter porn) and the situations (dramatic rescues).
As a bonus, the show also features a subplot about the protagonist's girlfriend and her trials and tribulations as an editor at a publishing house.

Toshokan Sensou - Library War
nask8.jpg

Another member of the noitanimA block that I think is worth mentioning because it is "action" shoujo of the non magical girl variety. Take the shoujo romance cliches of a girl who wishes she could find her knight in shining armor and combine it with assault rifles and you have an interesting mix that scratches both itches. Indeed, by making the heroine a soldier, many of the typical shoujo tropes are reinterpreted or subverted. Definitely worth watching if you like shoujo but want a different take on it.

Aoi Hana - Sweet Blue Flowers
dEI9L.jpg

A low key yuri series adapted from Takako Shimura's manga of the same name. Noteworthy because it doesn't devalue lesbian relationships by fetishizing or exploiting them, nor is the main character "temporarily gay until she grows out of it". It would serve as an interesting companion piece to the upcoming adaptation of Takako Shimura's other (and more well known) work, Hourou Musuko or Wandering Son.

Tamayura
sftZJ.jpg

Although very recent, it's worth mentioning because it's probably been overlooked. From the director of Aria and the head writer of K-On!!, Tamayura is a show about the power of photography; the still image captures time and is both backward and forward looking - it is a physical manifestation of nostalgia, but it can also represent opportunities and possibilities. Three episodes of the OAV have aired at the moment and they're worth watching if you are at all interested in themes addressed Aria or K-On!!.

Sora no Woto - Sounds of the Sky
qYR5s.jpg

Half troll, half serious. The first of A1's attempt at creating a brand of original anime ("Anime no Chikara"), Sora no Woto is science fiction anime that hinges on world building as its central motivator. Unfortunately the moe designs (and some of the episodes) detract from the more interesting aspects of the show, but if you can get over the (or just skip/scrub through the moe stuff), it's a show worth watching if you like alternative takes on science fiction in anime.
It also has one of my favourite insert songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yWDI4e4Gj0

One thing I completely forgot to mention in my Aria write-up is that the music is fucking awesome. This track is just so evocative:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1sg4yfm3EE

There are a few other noitinimA/Noise shows that I'd like to mention, along with Emma: A Victorian Romance, but I'll save that for later. :lol

Wonderful thread!! I've been looking to get back into anime apart from just watching one or two shows here and there, and a lot of these shows came out when I had fallen out of anime for a while.

Bookmarked.

Great work.
Although no Suzumiya Haruhi in that last list = sad panda...
(also, le Portrait de Petite Cossette and Eve no Jikan aren't TV shows... 'really doesn't matter much, I know, but...)

Hey, give recent works some time...

Noir was fantastic, but it's pretty well known I think. It certainly should be in the 'you might have heard of it' list though, if that's supposed to be of good shows.

2010 isn't part of the previous decade... Sora no Woto is from 2010, not 2000-2009.

Other than that though, mentioning the best anime of 2010 isn't a troll. :)

Indeed. While I wouldn't recommend a lot of the 2nd season, the 1st season was fantastic, and the movie is one of the most beautifully animated movies I've seen in recent memory. Simply stunning!

No it isn't. Ask any anime fan if they heard of Nodame, Spice Wolf, Gankutsuoh etc & I'm sure they heard of it. Ask Noir and they will be like "What?".

One that I would add that I found hilarious (though I find many people disagree with me) is School Rumble. It's cliche as hell, but in my opinion that's not too bad if it's done well. School Rumble is a comedy show that really nails the comedic timing and pacing better than a lot of other shows. I mean, yes, the two main characters are fucking annoying as hell in how fucking dumb they are, but it's still pretty damn funny, even if it doesn't really end. :/

The show was pretty popular when i first started getting into anime. (in 2004). And let's face it, people probably don't talk about the show that much these days, because it isn't very good. Bee-train are one of the worst anime studios in existence.:lol

Tokyo Marble Chocolate
This sounds very interesting. I'll haft to check it out being a two episode OVA.

Ugh, right. 2000-2009. :lol

I suppose Tamayura would be disqualified as well. Doh!
(And you know, if I had to make a top ten list for 2010, Sora no Woto would be on it somewhere!)

Mononoke is a good recommendation but I would suggest to anybody interested to check out Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror first as the last story in that series is what led to the Mononoke series. The Bakeneko story remains my favorite medicine seller story so far.

Huh? That's completely wrong. Perhaps if you only started watching anime quite recently, but Noir was one of the best known and most popular animes of 2001. It was not under-appreciated or little-known at all. It did well and got two semi-sequels (Madlax and El Cazador De La Bruja, each with a new cast but some similar themes) for a reason, after all, it was popular and did well.

Now El Cazador, that one might be a better candidate; it's pretty good, but didn't seem to get nearly as much attention as Noir did. It's too bad, that was a good series. Madlax's not as good as either of the others, unfortunately, but El Cazador is great.

Noir was a pretty popular show. I don't know that any of those three you mention really compare. Maybe, maybe not. I'm leaning towards no, Noir was pretty popular. Those three shows are somewhat I guess, but I think they're a bit more niche.

I don't know about the rest of their stuff, but I really like Noir, El Cazador, Avenger, and .hack//Sign and .hack//Liminality (and those two only, the rest of the franchise is nowhere NEAR as good, there was a huge dropoff in quality...).

My hate for Beetrain is based on that show + maddox and what they did to blade of the immortal. I couldn't stand .hack at all, although i really like the soundtrack.:)

.hack Sign is hands down the most boring anime i have ever seen, the thing manage to put me to sleep even after just drinking coffee

Brobzoid

Imma go watch Planetes. PM me when The Vinland Saga anime gets announced. :c

I love .hack//sign, the anime, I've watched the series several times and still love it... the music's fantastic (Noir and hack sign have very similar music, and I love it in both series), the visuals are great (there are some cool environments), and the story is pretty good and interesting. It's a plot and story show, not an action show, though, so anyone who wants lots of fighting -- or much of any fighting at all, beyond cutaways from fights that are about to happen -- will be disappointed. I like story, when it's good, so that didn't bother me at all. Instead, I quickly came to like the story and characters and following the plot as it unfolds was compelling.

As I said, I just wish that the franchise had stayed good, it's pretty sad how quickly it got very mediocre, both in the games and in the subsequent anime series, that Liminality 4-part OVA excepted.

What, you don't like anime that's mostly about talking, not action?

Well I'd hope so, considering the year's lineup is somewhat weak...

Not true. Although I'd consider myself more of a fan of shows that put more emphasis on dialogue and characterization then action. The talking in .hack sign just wasn't interesting, it was boring, and none of the characters grabbed me either.:)

Question about the first few episodes of Monster

How in the hell did Johann manage to poison the candy and by coincidence make the director, chief, and other guy eat them? It just seems too bizarre that even though it was pre-meditated something like this could work out.

Everything set around it is plausible and i'm really enjoying the series so far, but this is bothering me to no end. Is it somehow explained later on?

Good job, Jexhius. Planetes is in the OP, so I am pleased. This thread reminded me to check if Kimi ni Todoke was going to have a second season, which it is. :O

I'm surprised that Nodame Cantabile still hasn't been licensed.

God, beck was the greatest thing i ever saw right up until the end. ive never felt so betrayed by anything before :lol what a terrible ending to an otherwise amazing show.

I hugely recommend Shigurui. The writeup in the OP is spot on... it's repulsive and yet.. beautiful.

I don't remember it being explained explicitly.
As far as actually getting the poison in, one plausible suggestion I heard was with a syringe. As for how he knew they would eat it, I don't know. I guess it's possible they ate the candy multiple times, and after the first time Johan poisoned it. That's just my speculation though.
