Man they are going to struggle to put out ten best picture nominations this year. CNN speculating Iron Man 3 might even get one. Weak year for sure. I guess they don't need to fill out ten so we will see.

What?

The Act of Killing
Before Midnight
Gravity
12 Years a Slave
Captain Philips
Fruitvale Station
Dallas Buyers Club
Nebraska
Philomena
The Wolf of Wall Street
Inside Llewyn Davis
Saving Mr. Banks

This year was full of decent Oscar bait.

When fx porn like Gravity is one of the two year's best pic front runner you know it's a ban year.

As for the nominations you have 12 years, Wolf, Gravity, Dallas Buyer's Club, American Hustle, Captain Phillips. Then what? Her? Nebraska? Um that's stretching it to 8. Saving Mr Banks? Okay, whatever. The Butler? Good Lord. Llewyn Davis? That was pretty small time. Iron Man 3 doesn't seem like such a stretch anymore. Last year we saw only 9 nominations and I think we will see the same.

The way the nominations is weird though. Her will definitely not win the best picture, but because it's fanbase seems so passionate about it, it'll probably pick up a few number one positions on ballots.

It's far better to get a fair few first places than it is to get a million fifth places, because of the way the voting works. Inside Llewyn David will probably be the same.

There's no way Iron Man 3 would get nominated before Ron Howard's Rush.

Minus American Hustle, this is one of the few years where i'm happy to see any of the "contenders" win the best picture award (Her, 12 Years, Gravity, Wolf of Wallstreet)

..but knowing how often the academy gets it wrong, this means American Hustle will win.

Pretty much agree with all of the above. Her didn't do much for me but I can see why it's considered a great one. While American Hustle deserves some acting nominations, I don't think the movie as a whole even deserves one of those ten spots for best picture nomination, never mind a win.

I really hope they put multiple "indies" up there because there's plenty of room after those 4-5 movies that are winner contenders. Short Term 12 will never show on that list but I really think it deserves a nomination. Maybe something like Fruitvale Station too, but zero chance there.

American Hustle will be completely and utterly forgotten in a year or two. Count on it.
I was just talking about this with a friend earlier. For the most part it's pretty entertaining in the moment, but without any strong unifying themes or ideas, there's nothing to make it stick in the mind.

Leo's going to get a nom, but there's no way that anyone who isn't Chiwetel Ejiofor is walking away with the award. That was a starmaker.

So apparently American Hustle is everyone's favorite critically-acclaimed film to shit on this year.

Your loss. Film is fucking awesome.

I hope Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams don't end up winning like the Golden Globes.

I haven't see all the other movies, but if those two are the best performances... :\

So odd watching on YouTube and some announcer going "THREE MINUTES TO AIR. THREE MINUTES." It's like when you watch basketball games on the internal feed and you can hear the announcers chit chatting during commercial breaks.

It wasn't a bad movie and had some outstanding performances. But I felt like it just didn't have that excitement or humor or "it" that something like Goodfellas or the movies it was similar to had.

I keep seeing comparisons to Goodfellas, but to me, it was more akin to a Coen Brothers black comedy than a Scorsese film.

I haven't seen too many of the award season darlings but of those I've seen I would say these deserve nominations:

Gravity:
Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. It would be a crime if he were not nominated.
Best Visual Effects: It has to be a lock to win this, right?

Dallas Buyers Club:
Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey. Unforgettable performance, even beyond the weight loss thing. I think he deserves to win.
Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto. I think he maybe deserves a nomination though maybe not a win.

Nebraska. The accolades are strong for this one:

Best Picture. I think it deserves to be nominated. I haven't seen enough of the other pictures to say if it should win. It is at least my favorite movie of the year of those I've seen.
Best Director for Alexander Payne. He's been nominated twice for this award but hasn't previously won. IMO this is his best work thus far as a director and I think he has a shot to win.
Best Original Screenplay for Bob Nelson
Best Actor for Bruce Dern: He won at cannes and I think he deserves to be nominated at least, though maybe we won't win in this year's crowded field.
Best Supporting Actor for Will Forte. He anchors the movie and a nomination could give him a new career as a dramatic actor.

Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest And Celestine, Frozen, and The Wind Rises all for best animated film.

Where the heck is Monster's U?

Amy Adams is so good at everything but she's doomed to be the eternal runner-up..

I thought Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic in American Hustle, but it's unfortunate that Adams' performance is getting overshadowed by Lawrence's.

Adams was the star of that film, IMO. I think the brilliance of her performance is proven by the astounding number of "Amy Adams' accent was so bad!" posts in the American Hustle thread.

Rush bomba!

Daniel Bruhl deserved a nom, and I really liked the movie enough for it to be up for best picture. Oh wells.

American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyer's Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, 12 Years A Slave, and The Wolf Of Wallstreet.

Wow!

But yeah, no Monster's U is shocking to me. I wonder if Frozen's gonna win anything.

I really need to see Nebraska. I heard so many good things about it but it hasn't been screened anywhere near me. :(

I didn't care about what happened to any of the characters by the end of American Hustle. I agree with the people saying it will be forgotten in a few years by most people.
