Obsession Teaser Trailer (2026)

Absolutely - why? What exactly did Obsession offer, in your opinion, that was supposedly "better"?

The story? (What story?)

The acting? (The girl was okay at least.)

The atmosphere? (There wasn't really one.)

So what exactly is it?

I'm genuinely trying to understand what some people liked about this film. It didn't feel original, it didn't have particularly charismatic or memorable characters and the horror elements were kept to a minimum.
Even the ethereal musical cues often felt out of place with the tone of the rest of the film.

I fully accept that taste is subjective, and that's fine. It just feels like I'm missing something fundamental here because I don't see what elevates this project - or why horror fans in particular would connect with it strongly enough to not only recommend it, but rewatch it in theaters.
To me, it was one of the most firmly "one and done" films I've seen in a while.
Great characters, great acting atmosphere and script.

Also if you've ever had a slightly over bearing girlfriend then theres a lot to relate to.

Seems like a miss for you, not every movie hits everyone the same. I saw it on a whim and knew nothing about it in the cinema, blew me away.

I thought it was really good. It's essentially a romantic horror built around the "be careful what you wish for" idea, and I thought it was put together really well. Underneath the surface there's a genuine story about coercion, consent and toxic relationships, and I liked that it explored those themes while still committing to being a horror film first. There are a few memorable scenes, and I thought it played out in a way that was largely unpredictable. I do think the praise has ballooned a bit out of control, but it's definitely a very good film in my opinion.

That... was it?

Man, I rarely come away this disappointed by such an overhyped piece of media. It wasn't scary, it wasn't atmospheric, it was just... "quirky" with mostly mediocre performances and maybe two genuinely "OK" scenes.

It genuinely boggles my mind that some people consider this one of the best horror films of recent years, or even say it's worth a second watch. Why? I didn't see any symbolism or hidden layers that would make revisiting it worthwhile. What stayed with me instead were the constant Americanisms®, the protagonist's endless stuttering and mumbling, and dialogue that often felt more artificial than natural.
The only thing missing was Aubrey plaza delivering shitty, deadpan humour lines ffs...

It wasn't a "shit" movie, but it certainly wasn't a good one either. As far as recent lower-budget horror goes, Longlegs, Bring Her Back, Hokum and even Weapons (which is also over hyped) were all vastly superior, this honestly felt like an overlong horror TV special that somehow became one of the most acclaimed horror films of the past few years.

5/10.

Bring her back is amazing (still not better than obsession IMO) but Hokum is just average. Longlegs (I watched it two days ago) was... very disappointing to me.

I give it a 6/10. Not really an original concept - the idea of "be careful what you wish for" and a bit derivative. But it had some creepy scenes and actress does really well.

As I said earlier in the thread, the crowd factor was an important part of this movie. The uncomfortable reactions from everyone made it a fun group experience.

Though when it comes to watching horror movies at home in general, many people tend to diminish the experience for themselves. For instance, I used to date a girl that watched horror movies on a laptop during the day with the sun glaring off her screen, and it was awful. Hard to take one's opinion on a horror movie seriously when they watch it under such conditions and say "it wasn't scary"...

Just watched this. It was engaging, quite atmospheric and well acted. Not the best thing since sliced bread, but good. I was a bit disappointed by the supernatural aspect being made real, movie would have been better if the wish was ambiguous and she just went cray cray.

This is so very true, for example, I can't get scared or creeped out by a horror movie if I'm watching it with even a single person, day, night whatever. Never mind at the theatre, that's just a waste of a good horror for me. Although, I feel bad, such an amazing movie deserves all the support.

IMO, the best way is alone, at night with headphones preferably; if not, as little external noise as possible.

Ya ever dated a psycho (male or female)? This movie gets a +2 out of 10 if you have.

It's ok to be wrong.

Nicely said. Good case in point was when I saw the Exorcist re-release back in 2001. First time I saw it I was in an almost empty cinema and that experience will always stay with me. Went home hyped and told my brother, so we together went again a couple days later and it was a completely different experience. Cinema was full this time and everyone was laughing all the time. It was like I watched a different movie.

Weapons, Longlegs and Hokum better than this? Not in a million years, all bang average "horror"

Medicore performances?

Each to their own though, shame you didn't enjoy it.

Haven't seen Longlegs, but I agree about Weapons and Hokum. Those two were very disappointing. Obsession was wildly entertaining from beginning to end. It felt like an 8/10 horror movie while those other two were 6.5/10 at best.

Weapons lost all steam halfway through. Hokum was yet another one of those trauma/grief horror movies which bore me to death. I don't really care about a person treating a nightmare like their own personal therapy session. Imagine if Ripley in Alien was shown to have childhood PTSD and by the end of the movie she's happy and content that everything with her mental health has been resolved. Ugh!

The acting? (The girl was okay at least.)

I liked when the actress changed the way her face was composed to let me, an audience member, better understand her emotional state on an instinctual level. More actresses should try this!

Just watched this.

I'd give it a solid 8/10. One of the best movies I've seen for a while.

Knocked it down a bit as I wasn't too keen on the money part at the end and some choices that kinda took you out of the dark hell Bear and Nikki were in.

But overall I thought it ranged from good to excellent. The first half of the movie in particular was extremely unsettling.

Shes young enough to have avoided botox...for now.

I really enjoyed the film, the whole possession angle was a nice twist on the love potion formula. And it really stuck the landing, though I thought Bear would get severely crippled, like a quadriplegic, and she'd have him for the rest of his life. That Ian got his billion suggests that straightforward wishes are easily granted with no tricks, or maybe we just never got to see what inevitable downfall was headed his way.

Most immersion breaking thing was that these two record store losers had two such hotties pining for them :P

I thought the same.

Pretty good movie but the money part was off.

I absolutely loved the idea of the real Nikki being trapped underneath the cursed Nikki.

His downfall was fairly immediate?

Think its on Apple. It only adds a tiny bit to the Steering wheel scene and a slightly different score, at least i think thats the case. I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

Apparently the one on Apple is NOT the unrated version, it just says it is. some weird/confusing info going around

Watched this yesterday, a solid 7 from me I think. Liked it overall and nice acting, but the world building just took me out of it. You mean to tell me that there are wish granting devices just sitting on the shelf to be bought (with even a support hotline LOL) and that shit hasn't gone viral already ? Someone would've gotten that shit in an instant and filmed themselves on camera wishing for something. Whole thing doesn't make sense.

You might say that it is nit-picking/small part of the movie and the point is the relationship or chaos between the characters, but I disagree, it is simply too much to ignore, especially since it plays a big part in how the movie ends. The whole joke with the clerk not knowing about the branches might've actually been better for the movie if it was real, then it would've just been some purely chance/supernatural thing.

It was explained that they are a pretty rare collectors item and debatable if they work or not. Clearly the ones he got definitely work lol.

Ehhhh, yeah ... that isn't enough for me considering the huge role this plot device has. They're rare, but there's a whole box of them just sitting there as soon as the characters need them and the main character googles them and finds information and people debating about them easily within 10 seconds. Doesn't seem believably "rare". We get three wish pops in the movie and they ALWAYS worked without question and even the store clerk behaves like it's just normal ("he already got his wish"). Like WTF. Again, something like this would've instantantly become known in today's world, streamers/youtubers would literally make make videos on them to investigate, call numbers etc.

It just doesn't work for me. The movie is at its best when that stuff is in the background and yet, the whole movie relies on it, so it is impossible to ignore. It would've been better if the main character would've found some random shit in a dumpster or something, made the wish as a hail mary/joke and it was never spoken of again. Definitely not support hotlines/internet searches or some other unnecessary elements drawing attention to such a thing. Something like Death Note does the whole mysterious object thing a lot better, they should've copied that, minus the Shinigami. My 2 cents.

Fair enough, I'm not going to dispute how you feel.

Personally the forum they showed that explained that they were rare and that they work (or don't) was enough for me not to give it a second thought.

Not a perfect movie by any means but very enjoyable. I'd probably give it an 8 myself maybe a tad higher or lower on repeat viewings.

Yeah this is why I marked it down a notch and how it manifested with literal cash falling out of the sky which I disliked a lot.

Not sure why they didn't just make it a bit more mysterious like perhaps the initial woman store clerk offering it as a behind the counter as a sort of illicit good

Other than these points it was great and one of the best modern horror movies I can remember for an age.

If I'm picking then I think it might have been better if the shop was abandoned when he returned. None of it really bothered me though.

Like you say though great movie.

It's definitely an enjoyable good movie that I will definitely rewatch, the performances especially are solid. It is just regrettable that this massive flaw hangs over it, ruining what could've been a great movie, for me at least.

It is my position that authors should probably stay or shy away from explaining mysterious objects and draw attention to them as little as possible, but rather simply deal with the consequences of their existence. If they don't and start explaining these elements they better have some extremely solid plans and writing in place or else the entire story gets picked at and falls apart. The more "weakness" you show, the easier it is for the thing to break. Unfortunately, it usually never turns out alright when they do that and this movies suffers greatly from it. That's how you get midiclorians in Star Wars.

Reported for mentioning midiclorians.

I just thought the store was subverting how they generally are full of bs like crystals and astrology nonsense, but this one was actually supernatural, so any reason why people aren't swarming to get them is probably also supernatural and doesn't really need any further explanation because it could be anything. 🤷

I think it would have been so much better if Ian's money wish didn't work. Would have made it seem like Bear's own personal nightmare, and something more sinister than just wishes working for everyone.

Maybe, but I don't think that would've been enough on its own. I think it's just the ending of the movie here that's the issue.

The whole thing shifts away from the situation between Nikki and Bear and sharp focus is being thrust on the wish granting device and its powers instead as a solution. You get in quick succession two wish pops, the store clerk acknowledging that he also made a wish and acting like it's all good/normal in a jokingly manner (like DUH, there's warnings on the box man, what did you expect), you get lines of dialogue about them etc. It is simply TOO much focus on the mysterious object, it's too suddenly intrusive, there's whiplash there. Maybe with a different chain of events or ending segment, it might've been more acceptable.

Yeah, except the guy googles it and immediately finds reddit parody site threads about it. I've had more trouble finding software issues that millions of people use on the internet than this guy. Clearly it is not a local thing but a national (maybe even international) item that people have used. Does the store have franchise chains on something LOL. Explanations for it turn into bullshit head cannon justifications. See what I mean, the more you focus on the mysterious item, the easier it is to break the world building and in turn the story. When the guy googled it (if they wanted that scene in), there should've been 0 results to further emphasize the supernatural mystery.

I would have preferred if Ian made some strange wish which quickly turned into a nightmare too. Just seeing a billion dollars raining down felt jarring and not like clever writing.

Yes with mixed answers, some claiming it's rare, some claiming it doesn't work, that's clearly the supernatural aspect of it at work which is why I said it doesn't need further explanation because the reasons for these mixed results could be anything

The questions raised by The One Wish Willows are for later entries in the franchise to solve, and they'll probably botch it. As a standalone, since the lore isn't canon yet, you can make up whatever reasoning you want. It's a non-issue for my enjoyment, and I actually liked the twist that their working isn't a secret, but that it's hard to believe if you haven't seen it for yourself, so people don't.

I don't understand why people need everything spoonfed these days. It's very easy to make up imaginative reasons as to why things are certain ways with the OWW. But some get stuck on "plotholes" that they can't think their way around and lose all sense of immersion.

I honestly thought he was either going to get physically buried by the money or his roof would cave in over his head.... missed oppertunity.

Loved the movie but it did remind me of Wishmaster in that way lmao.
