"Greatest years in gaming" have to have paradigm shifting games. This year is just loaded with high production value sequels that are essentially "more of the same".

2017 was the last truly great year. 1998 was crazy good. This doesn't come close.

Most years are really good for me. I'm rarely lacking for things to play.

I'd describe this year with several statements:
- Light on top tier indies, especially compared to last year. Maybe Cocoon will be up there.
- A few really good stand out releases (Zelda, Starfield, BG 3, Spider Man 2).
- Several great games being overlooked by most players (Wanted: Dead, Bayonetta 0, Hi Fi Rush, Exoprimal).
- Way too much emphasis on discussing remakes this year.

2023 is going to be a fantastic year, but I think one thing it's lacking are truly revolutionary, genre-defining games. That's why I don't think we'll ever see a year that beats 1998. The long-term impact of Ocarina of Time, Half-Life, Resident Evil 2, StarCraft, etc. is just untouchable.

Hell, the two most critically acclaimed games of this year (TotK and Baldur's Gate 3) still draw deeply from the foundation established by the 1998 entries in their franchises.

How are TotK and Baldur's Gate 3 not paradigm shifting games? Not to mention the scope of a game like Starfield.

I personally LOVE this year, so many games I played and enjoyed and still have Armored Core VI look forward to.

There is almost game for every type of player, if you can't find something to enjoy then its time for you to look for different hobby.

Already released:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom --> DLC
  • Street Fighter 6 --> Game number 6, boring!
  • Resident Evil 4 --> Remake
  • Diablo IV --> lets not talk about this one :'(
  • Hi-Fi Rush --> I don't have ADHD, so I'm not the target audience
  • Metroid Prime --> Remastered
  • Pikmin 4 --> Number four in the series... been there, done that... meh
  • Quake II --> 60 years old, feels like WWII people used it to train for warfare
  • Dave the Diver --> I'm so done with pixelated/ retro gaming
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Baldur's Gate 3
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor --> kinda broken release
  • Final Fantasy XVI --> meh
  • Dead Space --> Remake

So this year was
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Baldur's Gate 3

While great games, but nowhere near "greatest year ever in gaming".

Looking at AAA there is literally only 1 new and fresh (hopefully) IP - Starfield. Lies of P is much smaller budget and just another souls clone that's an ok game at best judging by the demo. Hogwart's Legacy plays like any other open-world game, just well made and in different setting.

I guess Baldur's Gate 3 could be also counted as something new and fresh. So let's make that 2.

Do you honestly think Tears of the Kingdom had the same impact of Breath of the Wild?

What does Baldur's Gate 3 do that changes things up radically from Divinity Original Sin 2?

2017 brought us PUBG, Fortnite, and Breath of the Wild. 3 games that changed the industry. We'll see about Starfield, but this year feels like a (great) coasting year to me.

Nintendo chose the wrong year to release Zelda. The GOTY awards are going to be interesting this year for once!
